Capcom Allegedly Forced Staff To Work On-Site, Ignoring Japan's COVID Rules

Posted: 11 Mar 2021 01:00 PM PST

Last year's internal leak seems to have frightened the execs.

The global pandemic has been going on for a year in the West, but even longer in many parts of Asia, where the virus was first discovered. Like many countries, Japan - home to a number of high-profile games studios and publishers - asked workers to stay home, or at least to limit the number of people in the office.

However, reports have emerged that Resident Evil and Monster Hunter developer Capcom, headquartered in Osaka, has been allegedly forcing its employees to work on-site, and refusing to give time off if they catch the virus. These reports come from a whistleblower speaking to Japan's Business Journal, and were reported by Kotaku's Brian Ashcraft.

'Square Enix Presents' Promises News On New Life Is Strange, Tomb Raider, And Balan Wonderworld

Posted: 11 Mar 2021 12:30 PM PST

Switch news? Well, we can hope.

Well, well, well. It seems like Nintendo's Directs are truly trendsetting - and although Ninty certainly isn't the first to invent "company makes video of upcoming releases", it really seems like they made it popular, because now Square Enix is getting in on it, too.

Square Enix Presents is a 40-minute "digital-direct" lineup of new and already-announced games from the company behind Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Tomb Raider, beginning on the 18th of March at 10pm PDT/5pm GMT.

Soapbox: I'm Tired Of Ports And Remakes - Where Are All Nintendo's New Ideas?

Posted: 11 Mar 2021 12:00 PM PST

I don't want to relive the 2000s! Once was enough!

Soapbox features enable our individual writers to voice their own opinions on hot topics, opinions that may not necessarily be the voice of the site. Having argued a defence of March 31st yesterday, Kate decides to take on another hot topic: Why is Nintendo so focused on remaking old games?

Remember a few years ago, when every single movie was a remake or sequel of an '80s classic? Remember how exhausting that was for people who had little nostalgia for that decade? Maybe you don't - the past year has sort of made time turn into a beige sludge, so we're not even sure we remember our postcode any more, but it was a rough time. Some of us wanted new movies. Innovation. Creativity. Instead, we got Ghostbusters (but women!), Blade Runner (but Deckard is old!), and Prometheus (but it completely misses the point of the Alien series!).

The Dungeon Of Naheulbeuk Reminds Us Of Divinity: Original Sin 2, And It's Coming To Switch

Posted: 11 Mar 2021 11:30 AM PST

Felicia Day has a starring role in this mouthful of a game.

Dungeons and Dragons fans, unite! Okay, now all four of us are here, how's it going? How much money have you spent on really expensive dice Kickstarters in the past few months? Yeah, us too. It's becoming a real problem. Wait, why did we call this meeting?

Oh yeah: The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet of Chaos, a title we already hate typing and we've only typed it once, has just been announced for Switch! Drawing its inspiration from the excellent X-COM and the divine Divinity: Original Sin 2, The Dungeon of Nibblebork is a comedic fantasy turn-based tactical RPG, and if that series of words doesn't excite you, then you might be in the wrong place.

Farm-And-Fight Game, Kitaria Fables, Details Its Multi-Class Combat System

Posted: 11 Mar 2021 09:00 AM PST

We really hope it takes some inspiration from CATS (2019).

Many of you have been eschewing the Harvest Moon and Story of Seasons offerings this month in favour of waiting for Rune Factory 5's release later this year - and we're not too surprised. Rune Factory offers all the farming and foraging of the former two games, but with the added bonus of a robust combat system - and what else are you going to do while waiting for the crops to grow?

But Kitaria Fables knows what you really want: all the fun of Rune Factory, plus cats. PQube has just revealed some of the details of the feline fight-'n'-farm game, including how the class system works, and the local co-op.

We thought highly of it ourselves, and it's become a big driving force in LEGO's recent success. As part of the LEGO Group's annual financial report, CEO Niels Christiansen confirmed it has witnessed its fastest sales growth in five years, which is now driving investment into digital platforms.

Review: Apex Legends - A Great Game Hamstrung By A Compromised Switch Port

Posted: 11 Mar 2021 06:00 AM PST

A Royale Mess?

Respawn's Apex Legends, to our minds one of the very best free-to-play Battle Royale shooters currently available on PC or console, finally makes its way to Nintendo Switch and it is, unfortunately, a real mixed bag of a port. This is at its core the same fast-paced, ping-tastic game we've been enjoying since 2019, but here the concessions made in order to make it playable – the overall loss of graphical fidelity, framerate dips, blurriness, unrefined controls and so on – result in an experience that feels heavily compromised and one you should definitely try for yourself before shelling out cash on any of the paid versions or battle passes currently on offer.

Panic Button, a team that has done such stellar work in the past porting the likes of Doom, Doom Eternal and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus to Nintendo's console, has handed in an effort here that, despite its problems, doesn't feel lazy or half-hearted – this is the full-fat Apex Legends experience delivered onto Switch in a reasonably playable state. It's just that the seemingly necessary downgrades that have been made in the face of the limitations of the system itself, when combined with a handful of niggling performance issues, make for an experience we could only truly recommend if you really don't have any other way of playing the game.

Hades Almost Had Theseus As The Hero Instead Of Zagreus

Posted: 11 Mar 2021 03:00 AM PST

"We just found a better sort of angle on the protagonist".

Hades has been incredibly successful for Supergiant Games. It's an excellent roguelike action RPG, and a lot of its appeal comes down to a charming story. Focusing on Zagreus, Prince of the Underworld, you can hardly imagine Hades without him. However, according to Supergiant Games, its original plan would've seen us playing as Theseus, the mythical Athenian king.

Even if you're not familiar with Greek mythology, Theseus is a name you might have heard a lot recently, thanks to the Disney+ series WandaVision, which referenced the famous "Ship of Theseus" thought experiment in its series finale.

Developed by Nurendsoft, it previously launched for PC and Xbox One back in 2019 but mostly flew under the radar, only holding 9 (mostly positive) user reviews on Steam.
