There Were Over 2 Billion Tweets About Gaming In 2020, Most Of It For Animal Crossing

Posted: 11 Jan 2021 01:00 PM PST

We're also talking about Corpse_Husband a bit too much.

We're not saying it's because we had nothing better to do, but apparently in 2020 we all collectively tweeted 75% more about video games than we did in 2019. Huh! Weird!

With that big ol' chunk of tweets comes some interesting insight into what we're actually saying with those missives: it seems like Animal Crossing: New Horizons was the biggest topic, ahead of mobile games Fate/Grand Order and Disney: Twisted-Wonderland, both hugely popular in Japan.

Random: This AGDQ Speedrun Of Majora's Mask Is Basically Magic

Posted: 11 Jan 2021 12:30 PM PST

"That's time, by the way.".

For anyone who wasn't tuned in to Awesome Games Done Quick last week - the charity marathon where people try to speedrun a variety of games as fast as possible - you may want to watch this video to witness ClaireLynnD's incredible wizardry to complete The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask in just under 27 minutes.

Up until the end, the speedrun is relatively normal: Lynn plays the game in Japanese, which reduces the time it takes to "read" the text, but otherwise she does play the first dungeon relatively straight. About 12 minutes into the run, Lynn takes Deku Scrub Link outside, and starts cutting a bunch of grass, with commentator Riley promising that it'll make sense later.

Random: Cheap Clones Of NES LEGO Set Feature Duck Hunt, Contra, And Super Mario Bros

Posted: 11 Jan 2021 11:00 AM PST

Who's going to post the cease and desist first, we wonder?

Remember that gorgeous LEGO set that came out last year, with a deliciously retro TV and NES console playing Super Mario Bros.? Yes, the one that cost over £200. Yes, the one that none of us can actually afford. Well, it seems like a few enterprising companies have taken it upon themselves to clone the set for much cheaper, with... varying levels of success.

As Takashi S. Omoto points out in his tweet, the sets are "charming, if janky", and one of the sets even comes with extra "cartridges" that "play" different games, ranging from Duck Hunt to the infamous Bowser fight from Super Mario Bros.

Random: Watch Someone Speedrun Celeste Using A Dance Pad

Posted: 11 Jan 2021 10:30 AM PST

Speeddancing, more like.

Celeste is a challenging platforming game that will make your thumbs bleed and your brain ache, but apparently that's because we've all been playing it wrong: we should have been playing with our feet.

During last week's Awesome Games Done Quick stream, speedrunner PeekingBoo performed a 14:41 speedrun of Celeste's C-Side levels, played entirely on a dance pad. Not satisfied with the difficulty of the C-Sides, which are optional short-but-challenging levels, PeekingBoo also decided to get all the Golden Strawberries, which are also optional achievements that you get when you finish an entire stage without dying.

Soapbox: When Is The Next 'Big' Nintendo Direct? Oh, Does It Really Matter Anymore?

Posted: 11 Jan 2021 10:00 AM PST

No Direct-ion home.

Soapbox features enable our individual writers to voice their own opinions on hot topics, opinions that may not necessarily be the voice of the site. In this piece, Gavin wonders aloud if the old-style 45-minute Nintendo Direct format might have run its course...

It's been 495 days since the last Nintendo Direct. A proper one, I mean; a large portion. Not a Direct 'Mini' or a 'Partner Showcase' or a Pokémon Direct or a 35th Anniversary Direct or a 'Diet Direct'. No, I'm talking a bonafide sugar-loaded, fully-caffeinated Nintendo Direct™ — a real mother of a blowout!

Jim Carrey Takes Home Critics Choice Award For His Sonic The Hedgehog Movie Performance

Posted: 11 Jan 2021 06:30 AM PST

Robotnik takes the gold.

Can you remember a time before the pandemic, before all the social distancing and current political tensions, when the thing making the internet the angriest was a slightly dodgy-looking Sonic for an upcoming film? Blimey, take us back to simpler times.

Well, after a complete redesign and a successful time at the box office, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie turned out to be quite the hit. It ended up being far better than fans had feared – we quite liked it, actually – and a couple of performances, including that of Jim Carrey, really helped to sell the whole thing to a wider audience than just gaming fans.

Mini Review: Door Kickers - A Tough Tactical Take On That Old FPS Trope

Posted: 11 Jan 2021 06:00 AM PST

Press 'X' to breach.

Many modern FPS titles contain the obligatory 'breach' scene. You know the one; you blow a door off its hinges and suddenly everything goes into slow motion. You scan the room, and as luck would have it, all of your enemies are right in front of you, ready for the picking. It's flashy, it's cinematic, but it's not necessarily an accurate representation of real-life scenarios. Door Kickers seeks to take the concept a few steps further. Its entire premise is centred around breaching various environments, whether it be a small house or a fortified compound, and taking out every enemy combatant in the area. Visually, it doesn't look flashy or cinematic, but it's arguably far more realistic than many top-end FPS titles.

Presented from a bird's-eye viewpoint, Door Kickers is a tactical game at heart. Each scenario is broken up into 'planning' and 'live' segments: the 'planning' phase essentially gives you the time and opportunity to lay out the groundwork for your operation. You deploy your squad at various entry points, then proceed to map out their route throughout the environment by either directly drawing on the Switch's touch screen, or using the analogue stick. In addition to this, you can access items such as flashbang grenades via an inventory wheel, and you can plot out the direction at which these are thrown in the same way you control your squad.

Years after an 'Ultimate' version was promised.

Majesco Entertainment has announced that it will be giving Nintendo DS platformer Monster Tale a fresh spin on current hardware.

Currently only teased for "modern game platforms" – although, you'd imagine Switch is a safe bet with the original being a Nintendo exclusive – Monster Tale will be re-released later this year. Fans of the game will no doubt remember its half-platforming, half-pet-management gameplay starring the human-monster pairing of Ellie and Chomp, a duo tasked with ridding Monster World of the evil Kid-Kings.

UK Charts: Animal Crossing Top Again As Switch Software Jumps 123% Compared To The Same Week Last Year

Posted: 11 Jan 2021 04:00 AM PST

Over 260,000 boxed games sold in the UK last week.

The Nintendo Switch continues to dominate the UK sales charts, with Animal Crossing: New Horizons holding onto the top spot for a second week – despite shedding almost 50% of its sales over the previous seven days. This is to be expected as sales traditionally slump at the start of the year, but the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic – combined with a fresh lockdown in the United Kingdom – has helped shift more than 260,000 boxed games in the past week.

According to our pals over at Gamesindustry.biz, Switch game sales are up over 123% compared with the same week last year, which shows just how strong the company's grip is on the UK market right now.

Sadly, The Chances Of Seeing Desperados III On Switch Aren't Good

Posted: 11 Jan 2021 01:00 AM PST

"Maybe there's a new version of Switch that is a bit more powerful...".

We've seen some amazing ports on Switch, the most recent of which is the exceptionally good DOOM Eternal. While we know that Nintendo's console isn't as powerful as Sony and Microsoft's last-gen hardware, it's clear that in the right hands, it can still host some impressive titles.

However, not every game is destined to come to Switch, and it would seem that Desperados III – which is currently available for PS4, Xbox One and PC – is one of those games. Mimimi Games head of design Moritz Wagner was recently quizzed about the potential of a Switch port, and replied:
