Tails' Voice Actor Won't Be Voicing The Character In Sonic Prime

Posted: 02 Feb 2021 06:25 PM PST

"I'm sorry to say I am not".

It's Sonic the Hedgehog's 30th anniversary this year and it seems Sega could be planning to freshen up the series a little.

Just last week, we heard how the longtime voice of Sonic, Roger Craig Smith, would be moving on from the role after more than a decade. Now, in the latest update, the voice of Tails, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, has confirmed she, unfortunately, won't be voicing Miles Prower in the upcoming Netflix series, Sonic Prime.

Posted: 02 Feb 2021 04:30 PM PST

But the team is focused on "PC and existing consoles" for now.

Over the past year, there have been ongoing rumours about the Mass Effect trilogy remaster coming to the Nintendo Switch.

In November 2020, EA officially announced the game would be arriving on Microsoft and Sony's consoles alongside a PC release. At the time, this put an end to speculation about a possible Nintendo version.

Video: 5 Special Wii U Virtual Console Games Not on Switch

Posted: 02 Feb 2021 03:00 PM PST

These games went above and beyond simple preservation.

For years the Virtual Console allowed us to relive our fondest memories in gaming. Being able to download The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and play it in its original untouched state held a tremendous amount of value...but sometimes the service went above and beyond.

Did you know Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 contains almost 40 brand new levels made specifically for the Game Boy Advance e-Reader? If so, did you actually played them? (If the answer is still yes you were like one of 10 people). The Wii U Virtual Console release launched with all e-Reader levels unlocked by default - including the levels that were only distributed in Japan. These weren't just regular old levels either, they would take elements from across the entire Mario Advance series and utilise mechanics that weren't even in Super Mario Bros. 3. Chargin' Chuck? He's here. The Super Mario World cape - present! You can even pluck turnips as if it were Super Mario Bros. 2.

Random: People Are Making Really Awful Fart Remixes Of Mario Music On TikTok

Posted: 02 Feb 2021 01:30 PM PST

Whyyyyyyyyyyyy.

Gen Z social media platform TikTok can be wonderful, and a carefully-curated For You Page can consist of bread recipes, comedy routines, and Hank Green telling you about why you shouldn't eat grass. But TikTok can also be a wasteland of cursed content that combines nonsensical memes with dance routines, because we're all just really bored, ok?

Now, we know what you're going to say. "Slow news day, huh?" Well, first of all, yes, but second of all, this is news. A few creators on TikTok have taken the music from classic Mario games, including the New Super Mario Bros. "Desert Overworld" music and another song called "Mario Christmas type beat" that's just... Mario-style "Last Christmas" by Wham. With farts.

Fire Emblem's Gatekeeper Wins Popularity Poll Ahead Of Marth, Chrom, And Byleth

Posted: 02 Feb 2021 12:45 PM PST

Poor Chrom's lost five years in a row.

You know what? Maybe we've had enough of Fire Emblem's very similar-looking, blue-haired boys. They've had their time in the spotlight, and they've all been invited to Smash. You know who doesn't get enough recognition? Everyone's favourite nameless friend, the Gatekeeper.

His endlessly sunny disposition was always a welcome respite from the grimness of battle in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and his latest win in the player-voted 2021 Fire Emblem Heroes poll to "Choose Your Legends" is proof that he's finally getting the praise he deserves. Yay, Gatekeeper!

EA Sports Is Bringing Back College Football Games After 8 Year Hiatus

Posted: 02 Feb 2021 12:30 PM PST

That's long enough to complete college at least twice.

College football is a big deal in America, and while star players don't get paid - they receive free tuition, housing, training, and equipment - they bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue for the college they play for. Each. Sure, it's not as big as the big leagues, like the NFL, which is so popular that their annual Super Bowl championship has trickled into Rocket League and Animal Crossing, but it's still big enough that EA used to make games about it.

Way back in 2013, EA released NCAA Football 14, the last in their college football series. The game featured the likenesses of real players without authorisation or compensation, which led to a $60 million class-action lawsuit and the eventual cancellation of the series. Since then, college football has been relegated to smaller appearances in Madden games.

Video: Exclusive Peek At Soundtrack Sessions For Upcoming Zelda-Style Dungeon Platformer, Blue Fire

Posted: 02 Feb 2021 12:00 PM PST

Launches later this week.

We're big audiophiles here at Nintendo Life Towers, and there's nothing we like more than a little behind-the-scenes peek at a recording studio (well, there are some things, but it's up there!). Remember that Mario Medley from Abbey Road? Yep, that's the stuff! There's just something about the cellos, mics, mixing desks, and wood panelling that gets our pulses racing allegro.

If you're a VGM fan with a minute to spare, it's your lucky day — Ariel Contreras-Esquivel, the composer of upcoming Zelda-style dungeon combat platformer Blue Fire, has put together a short clip highlighting the recording of the game's soundtrack ahead of its release later this week. The short video — a Nintendo Life exclusive, no less — also features a few early glimpses of gameplay ahead of the indie game's Switch eShop launch on Thursday 4th February.

Apex Legends Switch Controller Pops Up On Amazon Amid Confusion Over Game's Release

Posted: 02 Feb 2021 11:30 AM PST

It's supposed to come out today, but no one's mentioned it yet.

Way back in October, we announced that Apex Legends, the super-popular battle royale game, had delayed its Switch release. A few weeks ago, there was an accidental "reveal" of the release date - and that date is today, February 2nd.

There have been other hints that the game is almost ready, too: an Apex poster for Switch appeared in Japan, the Apex Legends director, Chad Grenier, said there would be news about the game today, and, most recently, a new PowerA controller appeared on Amazon with Apex Legends branding.

Video: 10 Times Nintendo Characters Appeared In Third-Party Games

Posted: 02 Feb 2021 11:00 AM PST

Peach Panda will never be forgotten.

Nintendo has historically been rather careful with whom they lend out their characters and properties, which is why the likes of Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle and Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring The Legend of Zelda are such a recent breath of fresh air.

That's not to say there were instances in the past where Nintendo's characters were used – or at least referenced – in third party games, which is handy because we made a whole video about it; if there were no examples it'd be quite a short and dull affair.

New US Switch TV Ads Show Off Mario Party And Clubhouse Games

Posted: 02 Feb 2021 10:00 AM PST

Both are part of the "Nintendo Switch My Way" ad campaign.

Are all adverts going to start with things like "I'm so glad we get to bubble together" now, just to protect the company from COVID-related backlash? Well, Nintendo's new Switch advert for Super Mario Party does.

Featuring three women in a very fancy house, the ad shows off the co-operative and competitive games in Mario Party, plus a husband poking his head in to check why the gals are yelling so much. He's not invited, though, because apparently this is "games with the girls". They do know Mario Party can support up to four players, right?

Random: Pokémon And Animal Crossing Both Featured On Jeopardy

Posted: 02 Feb 2021 09:30 AM PST

Who is Dankey Kang?

Jeopardy is back with some video game questions, and once again, none of the contestants knew the answers. What's the opposite to "maybe you need to go outside more"?

For those of you who are British, and don't really know what Jeopardy is: imagine Countdown, but instead of being about accidentally spelling naughty words with combinations of consonants and vowels, it's a game show where you get the answer, and have to give the question. For those of you who are not British, and don't know what Jeopardy is: you can probably figure it out from the explanation, too.

It's Groundhog Day, Which Means It's The Last Day To Get Resetti In Animal Crossing

Posted: 02 Feb 2021 09:15 AM PST

Get your Resettis before it's too late!

Do you feel like the days keep resetting? Like you're living in an endless, repetitive loop? Yeah, us too. Only this time, it's not because it's Groundhog Day - the day where a weather-predicting squirrel tells us about the future, which was skyrocketed to fame after the Harold Ramis film of the same name - it's because of COVID.

Still, it's a day worth celebrating, even if Punxsutawney Phil has predicted more six more weeks of winter. To cheer us up, Nintendo has added a lil Resetti figurine to Animal Crossing: New Horizons - the first time he appears in the game, at least in 3D - but today is the last day you can get it.

Nintendo Of America Job Listing Offers Hope That Nintendo Directs Aren't Dead After All

Posted: 02 Feb 2021 09:00 AM PST

The last 'big' Direct was almost a year-and-a-half ago.

In recent years, the hype-rumour-announcement-amazement/disappointment cycle of Nintendo Direct presentations has been almost as important to fans as the games themselves; nothing sparks excitement among Nintendo players quite like a good old Direct tease, and it's great to see a whole community come together during those times to discuss and geek out about our favourite hobby.

But, as we're all painfully aware, we've hit something of a dry patch. Not counting the 'Mini: Partner Showcase' presentations or videos that only focus on a single game or event – such as the recent Super Nintendo World Direct – it's now been more than 500 days since our last 'full fat' Direct. That show arrived on 4th September 2019.

She's made Funko Pop Kirbies, Big Mouth Kirbies, and even Kirby butt.

Review: Gods Will Fall - An Addictive And Original Nintendo Switch Roguelike

Posted: 02 Feb 2021 08:00 AM PST

Pictmin.

Clever Beans Ltd, the team behind 2012's When Vikings Attack! and, perhaps more notably, the fantastic WipEout Omega Collection of remasters on PlayStation 4, make its first foray onto Switch with Gods Will Fall, and what a successful first foray this is. What we have here is a properly challenging and highly inventive dungeon crawler packed full of unique roguelike elements that lays a tough test before those willing to take up arms and dive into its punishing death chambers. There are a few little niggles here and there along the way with regards to certain randomly-generated elements of combat but, overall, this is an excellent hack and slash action-adventure that's got us pretty much hooked.

After countless millennia spent toiling under the rule of a bunch of malicious and evermore greedy gods, an ancient Celtic clan decides it's had quite enough of that, thank you, and packs itself into a fleet of mighty ships to set off and battle its omnipotent overlords. Of course, gods will be gods and, upon seeing these warships approach, they duly send the oceans into a raging tumult, crushing the entire armada and sending all but eight of its warriors to a watery grave. Gods Will Fall opens with these eight survivors as they wash ashore the island of their all-powerful enemies, challenging them to come together and finish the job they've started.

Port Expert Virtuos Is "Excited" About New Switch Projects "This Summer And Beyond"

Posted: 02 Feb 2021 07:15 AM PST

"There's plenty more to come from the Switch family".

Switch's release schedule might be looking a little light at the moment, but it would be fair to assume that there are projects in the pipeline which have yet to be announced – and we've arguably had confirmation of that assumption from Christophe Gandon, Managing Director of Games at Virtuos, the studio responsible for such stunning third-party Switch ports as Dark Souls, Starlink and L.A. Noire, amongst others.

Speaking about the news that the Switch has overtaken the 3DS to claim the honour of being Nintendo's fifth best-selling console of all-time, Gandon said:

Feature: Blessed By Hermes - A Peek Inside The Hades Speedrunning Community

Posted: 02 Feb 2021 06:00 AM PST

We speak to Supergiant Games and two prominent Hades speedrunners.

When you think of speedrunning in games, where does your mind go? Is it Super Mario 64? Breath of the Wild? Dark Souls? Undoubtedly, the 'classics' are popular choices with speedrunners, but there are plenty of others which defy expectation; Ring Fit Adventure is a recent prime example that's attracted the attention of players trying to beat it as quickly as possible. Traditionally, a roguelike — with their procedurally-generated levels that change with each run — perhaps isn't the first type of game you'd think of, either. However, ever since December 2018 when it first arrived via Early Access, Hades has leaned into speedrunning territory quite naturally. A fast-paced action-RPG with roguelite elements, Supergiant Games showcased an intriguing side of Greek Mythology with a game centered on Zagreus, Prince of the Underworld, attempting — again and again — to escape the domain of his domineering father, Lord Hades.

RetroMania Wrestling Reveals Official Trailer Ahead Of Launch This Month

Posted: 02 Feb 2021 05:45 AM PST

WWF WrestleFest's sequel will arrive on February 26th.

We've not had a great streak with wrestling games on Switch. After WWE 2K Battlegrounds proved rather disappointing, WWE 2K18 offered us an abysmal port and Wrestling Empire proved to be a bug-ridden (but nonetheless entertaining) mess, it falls to RetroMania Wrestling to give Switch players the grappler they deserve.

Classed as an official sequel to legendary 1991 arcade title WWF Wrestlefest, it's arriving digitally for Switch on February 26th. In preparation, developer Retrosoft has just released a brand new launch trailer, outlining what we can expect.

DuckTales NES Prototype Unearthed, Features An Unused Song

That's no moon (theme)...

Capcom brought us a remastered edition of DuckTales several years back, but we still hold a lot of love for the original NES version. Offering us a unqiue platforming adventure, DuckTales was widely noted for its excellent soundtrack – the Moon Theme most prominently – though it only featured a dozen tracks.

Within the last week, a new prototype has since been unearthed. Dated around February 5th 1989 as per The Cutting Room Floor, it's our earliest ever look at the iconic game and such, features a few differences due to its developmental state.
