Yep, The Wii U Gets A New Game In July

Posted: 25 Jun 2021 12:00 PM PDT

Ready to challenge retro Metroid titles in the charts.

SturmFront - The Mutant War: Übel Edition came out on Nintendo Switch earlier in Spring, but publisher Red Art Games and developer Andrade Games certainly got some attention by confirming there'd be a Wii U eShop release. It was originally planned for May, but after a delay it now has a final release date of 2nd July; it'll cost €9.99 / $9.99 / £8.99.

As you can see in the trailer for the Switch release, below, it's a top-down twin-stick shooter with a lot of explosions. If you combine DOOM, Wolfenstein and top-down Contra levels, then put them through an Indie blender, this would be pretty close to what you'd get.

Review: Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny - A Series High Point, Just Not For Performance

Posted: 25 Jun 2021 10:00 AM PDT

Zed's dead, dood. Zed's dead.

Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny feels like an oddly topical title for Nippon Ichi Software. About two years ago, the company effectively ran out of money following a catastrophic mobile game launch, and it certainly appeared for a while that Nippon Ichi was going to go under. Somehow, the publisher managed to weather the worst of this storm, which enabled it to defy the odds and release at least one more mainline Disgaea game. This could very well be the final Disgaea release, but if it is, at least the makers can rest easy knowing that it went out with a bang. Disgaea 6 is the most streamlined and enjoyable entry yet, demonstrating a thorough mastery of the in-depth mechanics that made this turn-based tactical series such a cult hit.

Disgaea 6 features a fittingly goofy narrative with plenty of over the top 'anime humor', although there are some moments of genuine emotion scattered around in there. The main narrative follows a zombie boy named Zed, who's hellbent on killing a nameless god of destruction terrorizing the Netherworld. Zed isn't initially all that great of a fighter, and he is killed rather easily nearly every time he confronts his foe. Fortunately, Zed has the power to "Super Reincarnate" every time he dies, and he gets just a little more powerful every time he comes back to life.

Stealth and platforming with a dash of RPG.

The last few years have been rather kind to fans of retro-styled action platformers, and another will make a bid for our affections soon. Within the Blade, developed by Ametist Studio and published by Ratalaika Games, arrives on the eShop on 16th July.

This is a title that promises a mix of stealth and platforming, along with some suitable pixel-gory kills; there'll be RPG elements too, as kills will allow you to level up and learn new skills.

Random: Fan Theory About Possible Nintendo Reveal Debunked By 20-Year-Old Magazine Article

Posted: 25 Jun 2021 07:45 AM PDT

Everything that's fit to print.

When Nintendo tweeted a photo of the Game Boy Advance to celebrate the console's 20th birthday, it probably didn't realise that it would trigger a fan theory which had a few people expecting a big announcement this week.

Reddit user Enryx25 (original post now deleted) kicked off proceedings after gazing at the tweet below and suggesting that Nintendo might have something to announce. Why? Well, because the screenshot on the Game Boy Advance shows Super Mario Advance World 1-1 with life count of 96 and a score of 1222360, of course!

The Mega Drive Mini Is Getting Another Accessory Which Does Absolutely Nothing

Posted: 25 Jun 2021 07:30 AM PDT

Well, apart from look nice, that is.

The Mega Drive Mini followed in the footsteps of the NES and SNES Classic Editions a while back, and Sega released it alongside tiny Mega CD and 32X attachments – purely cosmetic add-ons which didn't actually enhance the functionality of the console, but did look rather cool.

If you liked these largely useless pieces of plastic, then you'll be pleased to learn that Sega's releasing another one – and this time, it's a tiny version of the Power Base Converter (or 'Mega Adapter' as it was called in Japan), which, in its original form, allowed you to play Master System games on the original Mk1 Mega Drive.

The Big 1.0.5 Patch For Story Of Seasons Is Out This Weekend

Posted: 25 Jun 2021 07:00 AM PDT

We've also got details on patch 1.0.6.

We've already spent quite a few column inches on the much-awaited 1.0.5 patch for Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town, and how it'll go some way to fixing the tedious Maker machines and the boring dialogue. The patch was released in Japan at the beginning of the month, and now — after localisation and certification delays — it's finally coming to the West.

It's safe to say that this patch is the one that most players have been looking forward to, since it deals with a lot of the bigger issues that weighed the game down at launch. The XSEED blog blames the delay between the Japanese release and this one on the "large volume of additional text that had to be localized," which gives us hope that the dialogue will be refreshed in a big way.

Mini Review: DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods - Part One - Rip, Tear, Repeat

Posted: 25 Jun 2021 06:00 AM PDT

Ah Hell, here we go again.

It's been eight months since the first expansion DLC for Doom Eternal launched on other systems and now it's finally here on Switch. If that feels like a long time, consider that the main game took nine months to come to Switch: if anything, things are getting better! Sort of.

The Ancient Gods Part One is a standalone campaign that follows on from the events of Doom Eternal. Without spoiling anything that happened in that game, basically your mission didn't end with your actions there, and now Hell's demons are lining up an attempt to take over every dimension so they can invade Earth again.

Poll: Mario Golf: Super Rush Is Out Today On Switch, Are You Getting It?

Posted: 25 Jun 2021 04:00 AM PDT

Have your say...

It's been just over seven years since we were last treated to a Mario Golf game, so Super Rush's arrival on Switch today is most welcome indeed.

With plenty of fan-favourite Mushroom Kingdom stars all correct and present, as well as some interesting new gameplay modes to freshen things up a little bit, Super Rush has no doubt been on the radar of many a Mario fan over the past few weeks. Critics haven't been as impressed with the game as we would have hoped, however, so perhaps any early excitement has been knocked down a peg or two?

Nihon Falcom Announce Four More 'Trails' Games Coming To Switch In The West

Posted: 25 Jun 2021 02:15 AM PDT

Bit of a wait for them, though.

As part of Nihon Falcom's 40th anniversary celebration stream (above), the company has confirmed that it's bringing four more games from the Legend of Heroes RPG series to Switch over the next couple of years.

This venerable series began life as a Dragon Slayer spin-off way back in 1989, although the Trails subset didn't kick off until 2004. Western fans have always had to wait a while for English translations (we didn't see Trails in the Sky until 2011, for example), but the games have a loyal following and fans will be thrilled to see these ones finally localised and launching overseas.
