Metroid Dread's Terrifying EMMI Foes Further Detailed

Posted: 30 Jun 2021 10:05 AM PDT

Nintendo has shared a new blog post on Metroid Dread. This one delves further into the EMMI, the seemingly invincible robotic foes that stalk the corridors of planet ZDR and hunt Samus down as she explores.

As previously revealed, the EMMI (short for Extraplanetary Multiform Mobile Identifier) are research robots that were deployed to ZDR by the Galactic Federation. The EMMI's initial mission was to research the X parasite, but something has seemingly corrupted the robots and caused them to identify Samus as a target.

EMMI Zones

Each EMMI patrols a particular zone of ZDR that's cordoned off by distinct pixelated doors. The EMMI roam about freely within this zone, and their armor is impervious to Samus's conventional weaponry, so you'll need to avoid detection. The EMMI will emit a blue light while in patrol mode. That light will turn yellow when the EMMI has detected a sound and enters search mode. If the EMMI spots you, the light will turn red and it'll enter pursuit mode, chasing you down "at high speed."

Another Group Of Ex-Blizzard Devs Are Making A New PC RTS, This Time With Tencent

Posted: 30 Jun 2021 10:00 AM PDT

In what has become an ongoing trend, two ex-Blizzard employees have formed a new studio and are looking to make a new RTS title for PC, this time in partnership with Tencent Games.

The new studio is called Uncapped Games, and is being led by Blizzard veterans David Kim and Jason Hughes. Both have worked on numerous Blizzard games over the years, with their collective development history including work on the still-in-development Diablo 4, as well as Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void, and Diablo 3.

"Making the next great PC RTS has been my goal for almost a decade now, and Lightspeed and Quantum is giving us an awesome shot at making that," Kim says in a statement (via IGN). "Putting together a team of great developers with lots of experience and being backed by the right people who also believe in RTS as much as we do, is our first big step in getting there."

Quentin Tarantino To Bruce Lee Scene Critics: "Suck A D***"

Posted: 30 Jun 2021 09:54 AM PDT

In a recent interview, director Quentin Tarantino has made it abundantly clear that he's standing by his 2019 film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood's depiction of martial artist and actor Bruce Lee. Discussion of the portrayal--which at the time was criticized as being inaccurate and disheartening--resurfaced again when Tarantino appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast to promote the recently released novelization of the film.

The previous controversy stems from a scene in the movie where Brad Pitt's character, stuntman Cliff Booth, gets into an argument with Lee on the set of the Green Hornet TV show. After things escalate quickly, the pair fight, and Booth throws Lee into a car. Many fans and, prominently, Shannon Lee--Bruce's daughter--publicly took issue the scene. When asked about it by Rogan, Tarantino said he would issue exactly and only one apology.

"Where I am coming from is I can understand his daughter having a problem with it," said Tarantino (transcribed by Entertainment Weekly). "It's her f***ing father. Everybody else: Go suck a d***."

Disney's Jungle Cruise Gets Two New Trailers With Rival Introductions

Posted: 30 Jun 2021 09:38 AM PDT

Two new Jungle Cruise trailers have been released. The movie is based on the Disney theme park attraction, and it releases on July 30.

The trailers each have an introduction from the film's stars, Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. Except the actors both seem to think they are the main star and have serious trouble remembering the other's names. As for the trailers, each is focused on their characters, Skipper Frank and Dr. Lily Houghton, and deliver a similar mix of comedy and Amazonian action to previous Jungle Cruise promos. Check out, erm, Dave Gobson and Ethel Brunt in the trailers below:

Jungle Cruise also stars Jack Whitehall (Good Omens), Édgar Ramírez (Bright), Jesse Plemons (Game Night), and Paul Giamatti (The Amazing Spider-Man 2). It's directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who previously helmed the shark thriller The Shallows. The movie will hit theaters on the same day it's made available as a Premier Access title on Disney+, meaning that it will cost subscribers an extra $30 to add it to their accounts.

Amazon's The Wheel Of Time Logo Revealed And Confirmed For 2021

Posted: 30 Jun 2021 09:22 AM PDT

The Wheel of Time is a fantasy epic that spans through 14 books, with a rich world of forbidden magic and strange lands, and it will finally be coming to Amazon this year. Amazon revealed the tv show's logo Wednesday afternoon as part of its Wheel of Time Wednesdays.

You can see the trailer starts its focus on the scales of a snake, forever spiraling, until we get the title font of The Wheel of Time and a year date for 2021. The snake eating its own tail is a symbol used throughout the book series, but mainly seen as the ring of an Aes Sedai, a wielder of the famed One Power.

The Wheel of Time itself is used as a metaphor in the book as a metaphysical construct in how dying and being reborn works in the story--it's more of a spinning wheel, weaving a pattern, aptly called the Pattern in the series as well.

PUBG's 12.2 Patch Notes Reveal New Map That Adds Second-Chance System

Posted: 30 Jun 2021 09:05 AM PDT

PUBG's update 12.2 is finally live on PC test servers, and perhaps most notably, it adds an 8x8 map called Taego with a brand-new second-chance system. For players of Call of Duty: Warzone, it might be immediately familiar: It's pretty clearly taking a page from Warzone's Gulag, while adding some additional complexities.

Called Comeback BR, PUBG's implementation is actually more like a compact Battle Royale mode inside the main round, rather than a 1v1 showdown like Warzone's Gulag. If you go down before the first Blue Zone, you get transported to the Comeback Arena where you basically just have to stay alive for a certain amount of time. If you succeed, you'll get a chance to return to the match in its third phase with all of your gear.

Comeback BR is currently exclusive to the Taego map, as is another helpful feature to give yourself another chance: Self AED, which is a world-loot item that lets you self-revive. Finally, the map also includes birds that react to players' movement and gunfire, which can conceivably alert players to an enemy's presence.

The Big Twist In Doki Doki Literature Club Plus Loses Its Impact On Consoles

Posted: 30 Jun 2021 09:00 AM PDT

Editor's Note: To better explain myself, I do have to talk about the story of Doki Doki Literature Club, so if you have yet to play it and don't want to be spoiled, this is your warning to turn back. As an additional note: If you haven't played Doki Doki Literature Club, please read the content warnings for the game. This game is great--easily one of my favorite horror games out there--but it goes to some dark places. Just know what you're getting into beforehand.

Doki Doki Literature Club Plus is now out, enhancing the original psychological horror game with HD visuals and adding new story content and an image gallery. The release also marks the first time you can play the game on console, as DDLC Plus is available on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and PC.

That said, if you haven't played DDLC yet, I advise you to play DDLC Plus on PC for the optimal experience. The story doesn't change--you'll experience the same haunting narrative, juxtaposed with friendly and colorful visual novel imagery, regardless of where you play--but a bit of the horror in the game's twist is lost on consoles. The scares just work better on PC.

Posted: 30 Jun 2021 08:55 AM PDT

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has trained us all to sit through the credits. However, most of us aren't there to actually watch the credits. We want a little taste of what's coming next. The same can be said for the Disney+ series Loki.

Warning: Spoilers for Episode 4 of Loki below the video.

Lord Of The Rings TV Show Actor Reacts To Its Giant Budget And Explains Why Secrecy Is Good

Posted: 30 Jun 2021 08:53 AM PDT

Amazon's Lord of the Rings TV show reportedly has a gigantic budget, and now one of the actors has shared his thoughts on this and more, including why the secrecy around the project is actually a good thing. Benjamin Walker, who plays an unspecified role on the show, told Collider that a major investment is necessary for a production of this size and scale.

"There is a lot of talk about the money, but I kind of feel like that's what you need to do it right," he said. "It's like if you found someone you're in love with you and want to buy them a ring, you gotta do the best you can to show that you're committed to it, and it's not unlike that. This is not a legendarium that you want to skimp on."

Amazon is reportedly spending $465 million on the Lord of the Rings show's first season alone, though one of its former producers says that is fake news. Amazon Studios boss Jennifer Salke didn't confirm the number specifically, but she pointed out that Amazon's investment covers a "full season of a huge world-building show," which incurs a major cost.

Megapenguin Rehatched Announced, Built Entirely In Dreams

Posted: 30 Jun 2021 08:40 AM PDT

Dreams developer Media Molecule has released three levels for its latest Dreamiverse project, Megapenguin. Starring a very buff version of nature's greatest killing machine--the penguin--the big draw of this game is that it isn't complete yet and it'll be up to the Dreams community to finish the job. To help Dreamiverse creatives out, Media Molecule has provided a selection of assets that can be used to craft more Megapenguin adventures.

"We've kicked things off with these three levels - but, in the spirit of Megapenguin, we would like you to fill in the rest of the story and, above all, help us get Megapenguin back to his fleet where he belongs," Media Molecule explained in a blog post. "Who knows how long Megapenguin's quest might end up being, or where it may take him? We certainly don't. That's the entire point of this."

Firestarter Reboot Adds Fear The Walking Dead Alumni To Cast

Posted: 30 Jun 2021 08:33 AM PDT

Blumhouse's Firestarter reboot has added actress Sydney Lemmon to its cast. Deadline is reporting that she'll be playing Charlie's (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) mother and Zac Efron's wife, Vicky McGee.

A remake of the Stephen King 1980 novel, the movie follows a young girl, Charlie McGee, who develops pyrokinetic abilities and is abducted by a secret government agency that wants to weaponize her.

This is the second remake of King's classic novel, the first being in 1984 starring Drew Barrymore, rockstar David Keith, Heather Locklear, and King feature film alumni Martin Sheen. There was a sequel television miniseries in 2002 starring Marguerite Moreau and Malcolm McDowell that aired on the Sci-Fi Channel.

PlayStation Plus Free Games For July 2021 Revealed

Posted: 30 Jun 2021 08:33 AM PDT

July is almost here, which means it's just about time for a new batch of free games for PlayStation Plus subscribers. PlayStation has revealed the trio of games members can snag starting July 6. As usual, PlayStation is giving away one PS5 game and a pair of PS4 games. A Plague Tale: Innocence is the PS5 freebie, and it lands on the service the same day as the next-gen enhancements. Subscribers can also snag Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and WWE 2K Battlegrounds for PS4.

A Plague Tale: Innocence's PS5 upgrade features a number of enhancements. In addition to 4K resolution and 60fps, A Plague Tale will make use of the DualSense's haptic rumble, adaptive triggers, and 3D audio. This freebie is only available for PS5, but you should claim it anyway even if you haven't managed to secure a console. A Plague Tale: Innocence is a stirring adventure set during the Hundred Years' War that follows two siblings who are being chased by the Inquisition. A Plague Tale features a gripping story and some stellar stealth gameplay. It also has swarms of rats that will likely look even more terrifying on PS5. It earned an 8/10 in our A Plague Tale: Innocence review.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is an interesting freebie considering it's one of the games in the long-running franchise to not have a traditional solo campaign. That means the bulk of the experience is multiplayer focused, and since it's three years old, the servers aren't as active as they once were. Still, Black Ops 4 features a great Zombies mode that can be played offline. There are also Solo Missions that focus on the various specialists from the multiplayer mode. And if you want to play a battle royale mode that isn't Warzone, players still do jump into Black Ops 4's Blackout mode.

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Maps Return To Game After Being Removed In April

Posted: 30 Jun 2021 08:28 AM PDT

It's strange enough that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare got a couple of new maps this far into Black Ops Cold War's lifecycle. To make things even weirder, the two maps were originally added back in March, but then removed in April to spend more time in development.

Now, though, Al-Raab Airbase and Drainage are back, probably for good (although we can't be sure). Al-Raab Airbase is a 6v6 map that's currently featured in a 24/7 playlist, while Drainage is a 2v2 Gunfight map.

When the two maps were added back in April exclusively to private matches, they took players by surprise. Seemingly just as suddenly, they were stealthily taken offline in April. Activision later explained that they were released prematurely and needed more work.

Call Of Duty: Warzone Weapon Balance Update Changes Guns And Attachments

Posted: 30 Jun 2021 08:22 AM PDT

A new update is available now for Call of Duty: Warzone that makes changes to a series of weapons and attachments in the popular battle royale game. You can see the full patch notes at the bottom of this story.

The C58 and FARA 83 assault rifles in Warzone have had their recoil increased slightly, while the Nail Gun submachine gun's maximum damage range has been decreased by 39%.

Explaining these changes, Raven Software said the Nail Gun was designed to be lethal in close quarters like a shotgun. However, the max damage range was much greater than shotguns, allowing players to take down enemies at the same speed, or faster, than shotguns at nearly twice their effective range. As such, Raven is nerfing it. The developer didn't explain why the assault rifles are changing, however.

Marvel's Black Panther 2 Is Now In Production

Posted: 30 Jun 2021 08:14 AM PDT

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has started production. As reported by Variety, the sequel to the 2018 Marvel blockbuster Black Panther is now shooting in Atlanta ahead of its July 2022 release.

The new Black Panther movie is written and directed by Ryan Coogler once more, with many members of the first film's cast expected to return. Chadwick Boseman, who played the title role in Black Panther, died last year, and Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige recently stated that making the new movie without him would be an emotional experience.

"It's clearly very emotional without Chad," he said at a virtual Black Widow event this week. "But everyone is also very excited to bring the world of Wakanda back to the public and back to the fans. We're going to do it in a way that would make Chad proud."
