Guide: Best Nintendo Switch Football Games

Posted: 08 Jun 2021 06:00 AM PDT

We mean Soccer, not the other football.

As we publish this the European Championships 2020 are about to start... in 2021. Yes, it's been weird, and we also realised that it can be tricky being a football / soccer fan that happens to own a Switch. Nintendo's system both misses out on the premium games while getting bombarded with other smaller releases, and it can be hard to know which ones to get.

We haven't reviewed every football game on the Switch, so let's be upfront and say that some will be missing on this list that may be worth checking out. However, we've reviewed enough of them to share a winning 11 of the better ones here - oh yes, how very clever of us - and there's also plenty of variety to be found. It you want simulation, tactics, comedy or arcade action, there'll be something here for you.

Nintendo Reveals The Top 15 Most-Downloaded Switch Games In May 2021 (Europe)

Posted: 08 Jun 2021 03:30 AM PDT

The eShop's biggest games.

Nintendo has shared an updated list of Europe's most-downloaded Switch eShop games, revealing which titles were the most popular during May 2021.

Perhaps coming as little surprise thanks to its 30th April release date, New Pokémon Snap managed to gobble up plenty of downloads throughout the month of May to top this month's list. Last month's winner, Minecraft, has to settle for third spot, with Miitopia jumping straight into second place in its debut month.

Super Soccer Blast: America vs Europe Kicks Off This Week

Posted: 08 Jun 2021 02:00 AM PDT

Possibly got the name from ESPN's coverage of the European Championships.

We're not sure how much the name has to do with the context of the game - Super Soccer Blast: America vs Europe - but there's a light-hearted football title landing on Switch just ahead of the rescheduled European Championships 2020. It's no doubt a potential time-filler between watching games, and it's the second entry in this particular series on Switch (also the 5th sports game from developer Unfinished Pixel).

As you can see in the trailer above it goes for an 'arcadey' and accessible approach, which has the potential to be good fun. You can mess around in character customisation to create your own team and then tackle various tournaments; up to four players can jump in locally, too.

Random: This Ace Attorney "Class Trial" Cosplay Is Spot On

Posted: 07 Jun 2021 02:00 PM PDT

No objections here.

Ace Attorney fans will hopefully remember the heartwarming story of how prosecutor Miles Edgeworth, defense attorney Phoenix Wright, and loveable idiot Larry Butz all became friends. It began with a simple crime in a classroom, for which Wright was blamed, and which Edgeworth acted as his lil baby defense attorney; it ended with the former two becoming lawyers, and Larry Butz becoming a womanising nuisance.

The "Class Trial", as it became known, was recounted in the series as a pivotal moment for Edgeworth and Wright, and told through hazy, sunshiney vignettes. It's these vignettes that were faithfully recreated by three cosplayers a few years ago.

Video: Meet The Hori Flex, A Nintendo Switch Controller Built With Accessibility In Mind

Posted: 07 Jun 2021 12:00 PM PDT

Flex-ible, indeed.

UK distribution for the HORI Flex — the Japanese accessories manufacturer's accessibility-focused controller — finally began last week and we were fortunate enough to get our hands on a sample of this rather remarkable new device.

This little controller (well, quite sizeable, actually) has been available in Japan since last year, and features a frankly baffling array of options and inputs which enable you to attach a variety of buttons, sensors, sticks and more via 3.5mm jacks to create a totally unique control set-up.

Soapbox: Without A Dedicated Handheld Division, Is Nintendo Less Weird?

Posted: 07 Jun 2021 10:00 AM PDT

Missing the micro-games.

Soapbox features enable our individual writers and contributors to voice their own opinions on hot topics or random stuff they've been thinking about, opinions that may not necessarily be the voice of the site. Today, Nathan discusses the sense that Nintendo's handheld hybrid approach with Switch has led to fewer experimental curios...

As early as January 2013, the seeds of Nintendo Switch were — unbeknownst to us — being sown as Nintendo announced plans to merge their previously separate handheld and console game development studios. This idea of unified development was emblematic of the hybrid console fans eventually received, with handheld and home console now just two sides of the Switch's coin, instead of separate entities. This move meant consumers no longer had to buy two consoles and Nintendo's many talented development studios all now worked together to produce a steady stream of content for a single system.

Random: Logan Paul Thinks The Pokémon Card He Wore To The Mayweather Fight Is Now Worth A Million Dollars

Posted: 07 Jun 2021 07:30 AM PDT

"It is my prized possession. It's my good luck charm".

Controversial YouTuber Logan Paul stepped into the ring with actual boxer Floyd Mayweather last night, but you'd be forgiven for not noticing, as the bout itself was a proper snooze-fest – there wasn't even a winner! Yawn.

The glorified publicity stunt achieved its goal, though – both participants came out of the eight-round fight considerably richer, with the BBC reporting that 44-year-old, five-time world champion Mayweather will pocket around $50m. No wonder he has referred to the fight as "legalised bank robbery". However, Paul himself could end up being the true victor, and not just for the cash he will pocket for taking part in what his opponent called "a fun night".

Can't complain at that price.

Review: World's End Club - A Real Looker Spoiled By Hit-And-Miss Storytelling

Posted: 07 Jun 2021 06:00 AM PDT

"I said I had a theoretical degree in physics. They said welcome aboard.".

Zero Escape and Danganronpa are two of the most notable names in the visual novel space, so fans were understandably excited when the creators of these two juggernauts were revealed to be teaming up for a new project: World's End Club. After a soft launch on Apple Arcade, the full experience has finally made its way to the Switch and it's… well, it's alright. World's End Club plays with some interesting ideas over its run, but it's ultimately let down by its story and puzzle platforming gameplay.

World's End Club follows the story of the Go-Getters Club, an afterschool group of middle schoolers that suddenly finds itself cast into an apocalyptic nightmare when a meteor strike seemingly destroys civilization. The kids then wake up in an abandoned underwater amusement park and find themselves locked in a lethal "Game of Fate" where they're all pitted against each other by a creepy fairy. The rules are simple. Everyone in the club is wearing a wristband that displays a Task for someone else, and the first person to fulfill their Task 'wins' while everyone else is killed off.

Alfred Hitchcock – Vertigo Isn't A Trick Of The Mind, It's Out On Switch This Year

Posted: 07 Jun 2021 04:00 AM PDT

An original story inspired by the film.

Here's a title that rather came out of left-field in the Guerrilla Collective showcase at the weekend: Alfred Hitchcock - Vertigo. Published by Microids and developed by Pendulo Studios, it's a game that'll be heavily inspired by the iconic film and other Hitchcock work; pleasingly Switch is among the platforms being targeted for release at the end of the year.

The teaser trailer above doesn't show a great deal, but the short Dev Diary video below does show a few snippets of actual gameplay.
