Nintendo Removing Credit Card Support From 3DS And Wii U eShop In Japan

Ends January 2022.

Back in 2019, Nintendo announced 3DS and Wii U users located in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand would no longer be able to top up their eShop funds with a credit card.

Japan is now apart of this - with Nintendo's customer support account on social media today confirming credit cards and prepaid cards will no longer be accepted as of 18th January 2022, 9 AM JST.

Dragon Quest XII Could Shape The Next "10 To 20 Years" Of The Series

Earlier this year on the Dragon Quest 35th anniversary, Square Enix revealed Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate.

The series creator has already mentioned how it's intended to be a much "darker" and adult-themed take on the long-running JRPG series. Now in the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu, Square Enix's president and CEO Yosuke Matsuda has mentioned how it could potentially pave the way for the series' direction over the next 10 - 20 years:

Techland Is Reportedly Bringing Dying Light: Platinum Edition To Switch This October

Techland will supposedly be bringing Dying Light: Platinum Edition to the Nintendo Switch this October, according to ppe.pl via Nintendo Everything. This version includes all of the DLC from the first game in one "complete" package. All up, that's four major DLCs and 17 skin bundles.

Many people, ourselves included, thought that Skyward Sword would never come to a non-Wii console because it would mess up the controls. We were wrong, but also, we were a little bit right, too.

The new Switch version of Skyward Sword came out last week (we quite liked it) with some updated controls for players who don't fancy swinging their arms around their living rooms. You can now use the sticks to swing your sword, thank goodness, and that comes with a few minor gameplay changes, the most important of which is 'Clean Cut', the bamboo minigame.

Pedants and mega-nerds, look away now: Space Jam: A New Legacy had a lovely Game Boy cameo, and in a shocking turn of events, people on the internet are up in arms about it.

In the first five minutes of the movie, amid the usual setup of "young boy has a dream, but also, is sad", a miniature version of LeBron James is given a Game Boy by a friend, who then walks off, apparently not worried about leaving an expensive console in the hands of another child, or hanging out with his friend.

Nintendo's monkey of manifold mantles – one Donkey Kong, Esq. – recently turned 40. Forty years young and still so vital, but it could be reasonably argued that the ol' Kongmeister has been undergoing a bit of an identity crisis for most of his lifespan. The man-ape has turned from heel to face to heel more times than The Big Show (one for you wrestling fans, there).

Naturally, accompanying these changes of mood there's a surplus of interesting, diverse gameplay styles that our banana-loving pal is forced to carry on his shoulders like a sort of hairy Atlas. So what better way to mark the month of his esteemed birth than by taking a look at the different flavours of DK and seeing if we can find any sort of through-line to tie a neat bow around the whole experience?

Road 96 Starts Its 'Ever-Evolving' Switch Journey In August

Back in its Spring Indie World Showcase one title that Nintendo featured was Road 96, a game from DigixArt - it's a studio that was started up by former Ubisoft employee Yoan Fanise, who has titles like Valiant Hearts on their CV. The studio has 15 in the team now, and its upcoming Switch release is looking rather intriguing.

First of all there's a new trailer (above) and release details; it'll land on Switch eShop on 16th August, priced $19.96USD / €19,96.

Eldest Souls Animated Trailer Sets The Scene For Brutal Boss Battles

Eldest Souls arrives on 29th July, a rather promising pixel-art boss rush game that made its debut during Nintendo's Spring Indie Showcase. It uses the term Souls-like because that's a legal requirement nowadays, but it does nevertheless look stylish and enjoyable.

It's been developed by the small team at Fallen Flag Studio, and publishing partner United Label Games has now released an animated trailer, above, which is quite impressive while reinforcing the point that it'll be a game about persistence; the bosses will win some fights, in other words.

With all the lawsuits, official investigations, homemade fixes and fan complaints, it's safe to say that controller stick drifting – especially on Nintendo Switch's Joy-Con controllers – has been a heated talking point in gaming over the past few years.

Of course, plenty of controllers from a variety of manufacturers have the potential to suffer from drift (yes, even your fancy new PS5 DualSense could end up having problems), so conversation surrounding the topic has started once again thanks to the reveal of Valve's upcoming Steam Deck, a system which some will consider to be one of Switch's closest rivals going forward.

Fuuraiki 4 is a recently released "travel adventure" for the Switch (and PlayStation 4), and the latest entry in a series that debuted on the original PlayStation all the way back to 2001. The game casts you in the role of a writer travelling around the Gifu region of Japan during the summer, aiming to outperform your peers in a month-long competition with the quality of your articles and the stunning photos you take to accompany them. And so you hit the road and go… pretty much wherever the heck you like, whenever you feel like it.

You travel everywhere on the back of your trusty Yamaha MT-10 SP motorbike (the game officially collaborates with the bike company as well as helmet manufacturer Arai), and your rides are presented as a linked series of short panoramic video clips of real stretches of road that you can freely look around as you go. While riding along, road signs — the game's only use of English text — or several thumbnail images will occasionally pop up, allowing you to choose where to head next. It's also possible to mark a desired destination on the map and have the correct route automatically selected for you on your journey (this still gives you the option to steer away at any time) or forgo these sections entirely and instantly appear at any location of your choosing.

UK Charts: Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Soars Straight To Number One

UK physical chart data is now in for the week ending 17th July, revealing that The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD has gone straight in at number one in its debut week.

Despite being a Switch-only title, the game managed to outsell the multi-platform F1 2021 to achieve that success; the latest F1 game also launched last week and is available across Xbox Series, PS4 and PS5 systems. Skyward Sword leads a top ten which includes six Switch exclusives (if you include the Switch version of Minecraft which is considered a standalone edition).

Occasionally some rather colourful and charming budget titles win over a surprisingly large audience, like Toree 3D. Perhaps Mousebot: Escape from CatLab can do the same thing, time will tell.

Developed by Vector Unit, this has been on mobile for some time as a free-to-play game with microtransactions. It's now coming to Switch and other platforms on 21st July as a premium version with all of the previous content (and new stuff) included. That said, it'll only be $4.99USD and regional equivalents, with a further 20% off at launch.

M2 Is Bringing Toaplan's 'Tiger-Heli' And 'Ultimate Tiger' To Nintendo Switch This October

Emulation expert M2 has just confirmed that it is bringing Toaplan's 'Ultimate Tiger' series to the Switch later this year as part of its M2 Shot Triggers range.

Ultimate Tiger-Heli – which is getting a physical release – will include the original 1985 Tiger-Heli and its 1987 sequel Twin Cobra (AKA Kyukyoku Tiger). The package version also includes downloadable content, which includes 13 different titles (many of which are home variants of the two games), the largest number in the history of M2 Shot Triggers. Unrelated arcade titles like Get Star and Guardian will also be included.
