Apex Legends Emergence First Details: New Legend, Ranked Arenas, Release Date

Posted: 19 Jul 2021 09:33 AM PDT

Respawn has revealed the first details for Apex Legends Emergence, which is Season 10 of the popular battle royale game, and it's shaping up to be a big update. Emergence will release on August 3, and it will add an artistic new Legend, Seer, as well as an update to World's Edge, a new weapon, and a Ranked Arena mode.

While we don't know a ton about Seer's abilities yet, based on the cinematic Metamorphosis trailer, he was born under a bad sign, which gives him strange powers. The Apex website mentions his "artist's eye," which may mean that he'll be able to see things that other Legends can't, similar to Bloodhound and Loba. Also, he has glowing blue microdrones that look pretty scary, so watch out for those.

In terms of other additions, Emergence will include a new weapon in the form of the Rampage LMG, which appears to be a light machine gun similar to the Devotion and Spitfire. It will also add a Ranked Arenas mode to the game, which will allow players to become Apex Predators in both the game's core battle royale mode and 3 v 3 Arenas mode for the very first time. As with all Apex Legends seasons, Emergence comes with a new battle pass, complete with exclusive skins.

Fear Street Director Leigh Janiak Wants To Make An MCU-Style Horror Universe

Posted: 19 Jul 2021 09:16 AM PDT

Fear Street director Leigh Janiak has spoken about her plans for more movies in the Netflix horror movie series. The three-part series, based on RL Stein's hugely popular Young Adult horror series, hit Netflix this month.

Speaking to IndieWire, Janiak explained that the amount of source material meant an MCU-style cinematic universe was a possibility. "One of the exciting things about Fear Street is the fact that the universe is big and allows for a lot of space," she said. "One of the things that I talked about before I was hired was that we have a potential here to create a horror Marvel [Cinematic Universe], where you can have slasher killers from lots of different eras. You have the canon of our main mythology that's built around the fact that the devil lives in Shadyside, so there's also room for everything else."

Janiak went to talk about the unusual release schedule of the fear Street movies--one feature-length film released every week for three weeks--and how it gave her lots of scope for potential movies or shows. "I think that my hope is that audiences like it enough that we can start building out [more], we can think about what another trilogy would be, what stand-alones would be, what TV would be," she said.

Golf Club Wasteland Dev Offers $500 Million Version Of The Game In Elaborate Joke About Billionaires In Space

Posted: 19 Jul 2021 08:44 AM PDT

The developers of Golf Club: Wasteland, a golf game where human life is wiped out and the Earth is now a golf course for the super-rich, have launched a unique marketing stunt hoping to piggyback on the news about Jeff Bezos and other billionaires shooting themselves into space.

Demagog Studio's creative director Igor Simic is said to have had a "wake up call" recently and is choosing to remove the game from sale to the public and will instead sell it to just one person. The price? $500 million. Simic will then use the money to fly himself off Earth before the "inevitable climate, financial, and political apocalypse comes for the rest of us plebs."

"Golf Club: Wasteland started off as pure satire. The ultra-rich playing golf on the remains of civilization after initially fleeing to Mars as Earth crumbled thanks to consumerism, climate disaster, and Silicon Valley-fuelled greed," Simic said. "Well, now I'm not laughing anymore. These rocket obsessed billionaires like Musk, Bezos, and Branson are already packing their designer bags, so it's time I sorted out my own ticket off this doomed planet."

Today's Apple AirPods Pro Deal Beats Prime Day Pricing

Posted: 19 Jul 2021 08:18 AM PDT

Apple's premium earbuds, the AirPods Pro, are an expensive yet highly worthwhile purchase for Apple users, delivering active noise cancellation, a comfortable and customizable fit, and over 24 hours of battery life with the included case. They also don't drop below $200 that often--and during Prime Day 2021, they hovered around $197 the entire time. Out of the blue, Amazon has dropped that price even further today, with the Apple AirPods Pro currently on sale for $190. There's no telling how long this deal will last, so if you've been on the fence about picking up a pair, this is a price worth jumping on.

The AirPods Pro's active noise cancellation feature is accompanied by a transparency mode that lets you hear outside noise while you're walking around in areas where you might need awareness of what's going on around you. They also come with three sizes of ear tips to customize your fit, and sweat and water resistance makes them a good option for workouts and outdoor activities. Of course, for Apple users, a big perk is that AirPods connect easily and automatically to other Apple devices, from your iPhone to iPad, MacBook, and more. You can use Siri with the AirPods Pro as well.

Overwatch Summer Games 2021 Begins Tuesday, New Skins Debuted

Posted: 19 Jul 2021 07:48 AM PDT

The Overwatch Summer Games event is beginning on Tuesday, July 20. As usual Blizzard has started to tease some of the limited-time cosmetics you'll be able to earn during the event.

In the announcement posted to Twitter we can see new skins featuring Symmetra as a mermaid, Ashe and Bob in casual beachwear, and Mei as a '50s-era ice cream parlor worker. A follow-up tweet showed off more of the Symmetra skin and gave it the name, Mermaid Symmetra, so we'd expect further teasers to come leading up to the event.

The annual event is also near-guaranteed to bring back Lucioball, the exclusive brawl that has been paired with the Summer Games event every year since it started in 2016. That 3v3 mode is loosely based on soccer, and the 2020 games introduced a variant called Lucioball Remix.

Psychonauts 2's Tim Schafer Reflects On Life Under Microsoft

Posted: 19 Jul 2021 07:22 AM PDT

Double Fine was a big acquisition for Microsoft back in 2019, as the studio headed by Tim Schafer had been responsible for well-received but not always financially successful games such as Brutal Legend and several remasters of classic LucasArts games. Now part of Microsoft's lineup of first-party studios, not much has changed for the developer as Tim Schafer explained that so far it had been business as usual--but without the added headache of having to secure funding for projects.

"The way that Xbox has been acquiring studios is what they call 'limited integration'," Schafer explained to Stevivor about how Microsoft's vast resources put his mind at ease. Under Microsoft, Double Fine still had complete creative freedom and access to the company's deep pockets.

"Think about creative things instead of thinking about how you're gonna run out of money in three months," Schafer said.

Streets of Rage 4 Developer Has A Switch DLC Fix Ready To Go

Posted: 19 Jul 2021 07:20 AM PDT

Dotemu, the co-developer behind Streets of Rage 4, has a fix ready for the game's DLC on Switch but will have to wait for a review from Nintendo to release it.

While Streets of Rage 4 players on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC have been able to play the game's new DLC, Mr. X Nightmare, since July 15, Switch players haven't been so lucky. Streets of Rage 4's latest expansion has been unavailable to download on Nintendo's console due to a bug that prevents players from actually purchasing it.

The developer now has a fix for that bug, but Switch players will still have to wait a bit longer to pick up Mr. X Nightmare. According to a tweet from Dotemu, "The fix is currently being reviewed by Nintendo." It does seem like the developer managed to get some leeway from Nintendo though, saying, "The process usually takes several days, however, given that situation, the validation timeframe will be shortened."

Halo Co-Creator Talks About Canceled Game With Lord Of The Rings Director Peter Jackson

Posted: 19 Jul 2021 07:08 AM PDT

Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto has shared some new insight into Halo: Chronicles, which was apparently the name for the Halo game that Bungie was collaborating on with The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson. Speaking to HiddenXperia, Lehto started off by clarifying that he did not personally get to visit Jackson at his home in New Zealand for the meeting.

Instead, Joseph Staten and Harold Ryan of Bungie took the trip and spoke with Jackson about a potential collaboration. From what Lehto shared, it sounds like the partnership didn't get very far off the ground. He said Bungie and Jackson's team were "trying to figure out what kind of collaboration we could cook up" with the acclaimed filmmaker.

"Because we were just so excited about the idea of working with Peter Jackson. We had a great deal of respect for him and what he had done with The Lord of the Rings. We felt like it would have been a natural fit. It could have been something we would have been really impressed by. But sadly, that kind of just petered away, no pun intended. I wish we would have seen something come from that, really, I do," he said.
