NERF: Legends Will Allow You To Shoot Enemies With Annoying Soft Darts In October

Posted: 12 Aug 2021 12:00 PM PDT

With a campaign and cross-platform multiplayer.

Even if, as is the case for this scribe, your childhood is but a distant memory in sepia tones, you've likely heard of NERF - the guns, specifically. Big plastic weapons that fire little foam darts at surprising velocity, they're still very popular toys (are we allowed to call them toys or is that too uncool?).

Now there's a decent-looking licensed game heading to Switch and pretty much every major platform in October - NERF: Legends. As you can see in the trailer above it's targeting the youngsters of today by repeating the lyrics "I'm a SAVAGE" over and over again, but that aside it looks like a competent and colourful shooter.

Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Player Investigates The Game's Scrapped Poison Water

Posted: 12 Aug 2021 11:00 AM PDT

A deeper dive into how it would have worked.

Over the years, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild players have uncovered all sorts of secrets from glitches that cause chaos to "impossible" treasure chests and even a secret debug room. One of the secrets sitting in the 'ideas that never made it into the final game' category is poison water, a feature which seems to have made it pretty far through development, but ultimately never ended up being used.

Breath of the Wild's unused poison water has been known about for some time – as early as 2018, if not before – but YouTube user Waikuteru has shared a new video giving a much deeper dive into how it all works. In the clip below, in which mod tools are used to flood Hyrule with the purple goop, you'll get to see how Link and enemies would have interacted with it.

Poll: Did Nintendo Deliver Its Best Ever Indie World Showcase?

Posted: 12 Aug 2021 10:00 AM PDT

It's right up there, we'd say.

Well, the dust has settled on another Indie World Showcase from Nintendo, and it certainly got Switch fans talking. In just over 20 minutes there were 19 games shown off — some were surprises, others were long-awaited updates, and others still were out-of-left-field games from fresh names in the development scene.

This writer's personal view was that it may have been Nintendo's best ever Indie World, for multiple reasons. Of course that's highly subjective and there have been presentations with bigger individual reveals, but as a package this seemed like the most carefully curated show to date, and one balanced to offer something to just about anyone.

Footage shows the Goombas being carried away.

The Goomba Tower in question.

If you've seen the pictures and videos of Japan's Super Nintendo World, or especially if you've been lucky enough to visit yourself, you'll no doubt have seen all of the lovely Super Mario-themed models and decorations dotted around the park. Sadly, earlier this week, one of these decorations took a bit of a tumble, putting a hold on the day's proceedings and kicking off an investigation.

A Near-Legendary Castlevania Beta Has Just Been Shared Online

Posted: 12 Aug 2021 08:15 AM PDT

The 'Bloodlines' that could have been.

Castlevania has been in the news a lot of late, but not for the reasons you might expect. No, Konami hasn't announced a new video game in this popular series, but it has kept the name alive via the excellent Netflix series. We've also seen Castlevania gobble up column inches thanks to the release of a demo of the Dreamcast entry – a game that was never completed.

Sticking with that topic, a pre-release version of Castlevania: Bloodlines (beta 0.5) has been shared online recently, giving fans of the game a chance to sample some of the content which didn't make it into the final product, such as the famous airship level which was shown in some previews at the time.

'Not Tonight 2' Sets Its Post-Brexit Satirical Sights On The US

Posted: 12 Aug 2021 08:00 AM PDT

"Our most political game yet".

Back in 2020, a game called Not Tonight: Take Back Control Edition launched on the Nintendo Switch — on the exact date that the UK left the European Union, in fact. ("Brexit", as it's more commonly known). The game was a satirical take on British politics set in a post-Brexit alternate universe; you play a bouncer whose job it is to examine people's ID, Papers Please-style, in order to figure out whether or not they should be let in.

Following the success of the first game, UK publisher No More Robots and developer PanicBarn have announced a sequel, Not Tonight 2, and this time it's set across the pond. Here's how it's described in the official PR blurb:

NEO TWEWY falls out of top ten.

Famitsu's Japanese chart figures are now in for the week ending 8th August, revealing that Minecraft, which first launched physically on Switch back in June 2018, has returned to the top of the table.

The game sold an estimated 14,912 physical copies this week, leaving it ahead of games like Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, which launched just last month. Last week's number one, NEO: The World Ends With You, has fallen out of the top ten entirely in its second week on sale.

Doctor Who: The Lonely Assassins Has Arrived On Nintendo Switch

Posted: 12 Aug 2021 07:00 AM PDT

The best wibbly wobbly timeline.

It's Doctor Who game season, it seems, which is absolutely fine by us. It wasn't so long ago that Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality was confirmed for a September release, and now Doctor Who: The Lonely Assassins has dropped onto the Switch eShop so you can pick it up from today (12th August). Well, that TARDIS just drops in anywhere with no notice.

Originally planned for earlier this year, it continues on directly from the events of the famous episode Blink, which is certainly a stand-out in the modern Who era. As you can see below, this is a puzzle experience that blends live-action footage with the gameplay, so could certainly be worth a look for fans of the show.

UK Newspaper Comes Under Fire For Hinting That Video Games Are "The Next Global Pandemic"

Posted: 12 Aug 2021 06:30 AM PDT

"It's disappointing to see pieces like this extensively misrepresenting games".

The health effects of video games have been discussed and debated since the dawn of the interactive entertainment industry way back in the '70s, and while there have been a great many studies that highlight the positive impact games have on people, the ones which focus on the negative usually make a bigger splash in the mainstream media.

The most recent example of this comes from UK newspaper The Telegraph, which has published a piece entitled 'Spiritual opium: could gaming addiction ruin a generation?' The article has piggybacked off a recent statement made by the Chinese state media that compares video games to "electronic drugs".

Review: Shadowverse: Champion's Battle - Switch's Best Card Battling RPG Yet

Posted: 12 Aug 2021 06:00 AM PDT

The game based on the anime based on the game!

It's rather shocking to consider how few card games there are on the Switch today. Sure, there are quite a few deck-building roguelites that incorporate elements of card games into their design, but these don't quite manage to scratch that same itch. Luckily, Cygames has seen fit to bring over its popular Shadowverse mobile game in the form of Shadowverse: Champion's Battle, a full-fledged RPG that's built entirely around the card game. Shadowverse: Champion's Battle is a resounding success in what it sets out to do, providing a compelling and enjoyable take on the genre that we'd strongly encourage you to check out.

Shadowverse: Champion's Battle follows a typical Shonen school drama narrative about an anonymous, mute new student to Tensei Academy. In both the school and the surrounding town, a card game called Shadowverse has completely taken over the zeitgeist, and your character of course has an uncanny natural ability to play the game amazingly well. One thing leads to another and your character finds themselves joining the school's mysterious Shadowverse club, which is weirdly unpopular and underground considering the prevalence of the card game literally everywhere else you go. As a result of its decline, the school's class president wants to close the club down for good, but she agrees to let it go on if you and your friends can win the Shadowverse world championship.

The Voice Of Mario From The Early '90s Has Passed Away

Posted: 12 Aug 2021 05:30 AM PDT

Prolific actor Walker Boone sadly left us at the start of 2021.

Charles Martinet has been the voice of Mario for quite some time now, but he's not the only actor to bring the famous character to life. In the early '90s, Mario was voiced by Walker Boone, who would provide his vocal talents to both The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World cartoon shows, from 1990 and 1991 respectively.

Sadly, Boone – whose real name was Theodore Nicoloff – passed away at the end of January of this year, but his death has gone largely unnoticed until today. He was 76.

Vintage rallying.

The release on Nintendo's little system (along with Xbox consoles) includes all previous DLC including the new Kenya addition, which also features in the nifty launch trailer above.

It's a game we've had our eye on since its Switch version was confirmed, especially as it's been so well received in its original PC guise. Below are the official details on what to expect (along with information on the Kenya DLC).

Animated Short Introduces Boreal Tenebrae, A Mysterious Retro-Style Adventure Coming To Switch
