Posted: 17 Aug 2021 02:30 AM PDT

"We wanted to create diverse landscapes".

RedDeerGames has shared some brand new screenshots for 7 Horizons, a hand-drawn platformer heading to Switch later this year.

As we heard back in May, the game's aiming to offer 'Rayman meets Mega Man' gameplay along with a comic book-style approach to its visuals. In a new statement shared with press, RedDeerGames' creative director Dominik Czarniga says, "7 Horizons is all about original hand-drawn, beautiful worlds. We wanted to create diverse landscapes, with an emphasis on the Marvel-style comic character of the drawings, but at the same time maintaining a cosmic atmosphere."

Random: Comic Artist Creates Legendary For 'Pokémon Gun' Meme

Posted: 16 Aug 2021 05:05 PM PDT

Don't bring a sword or shield to a gun fight.

In the past, Game Freak would typically release two mainline Pokémon games and one other entry featuring additional content. Fans saw this happen countless times over the years with titles such as Pokémon Yellow, Crystal, Emerald and Platinum.

For the latest entries on the Nintendo Switch, the developer decided to release expansion content instead via DLC - essentially ruling out the chances of a standalone third game, alongside Pokémon Sword and Shield. That hasn't stopped fans from coming up with their own ideas for a third entry and one that caught on was the meme Pokémon Gun. It only makes sense alongside sword and shield, right?

Today, our first interviewee is the Grammy-nominated, BAFTA award-winning composer Austin Wintory whose work includes the soundtracks to indie darlings like thatgamecompany's flOw and Journey, Giant Squid's Abzu, the Banner Saga series, and much larger projects such as Assassin's Creed Syndicate, to name a few.

Mini Review: art of rally - Stylish Driving With Plenty Of Substance

Posted: 16 Aug 2021 10:30 AM PDT

Vincent van Go Go Go.

Funselektor Labs' art of rally looks like it should be the most accessible rally sim of all time. Its bright colours and abstract environments almost create a false sense of security, distracting from an otherwise remarkably deep and challenging rally title. It retains the same authentic gameplay from its original PC release, but in moving over to the Switch the game has undergone some notable graphical downgrades.

Launching the game for the first time you're greeted by a large totem character, who briefly addresses you before you're sent off to roam about the land. This is pretty much the only time the game strays into more fantastical elements, and it's a bizarre way to kick off an otherwise pure driving title. Once you start cruising around the initial free-roam location, however, it quickly dawns on you that this isn't your run-of-the-mill arcade racer; this is an authentic take on rallying that may prove to be quite the shock for more casual players.

GoldenEye 007 Speedrunner Grabs A New Record With A Sneaky Trick

Posted: 16 Aug 2021 07:30 AM PDT

Licence To Skill.

It may be almost 24 years since GoldenEye released on the N64 but, in the intervening decades the game's dedicated community of speedrunners has continued to challenge themselves to come up with the fastest times on various levels, blazing through enemy gauntlets as quickly as possible to create new World Record times.

Regarded as the game's toughest stage, the Moonraker-inspired Aztec level has provided something of an ongoing challenge in this regard due to an awkwardly positioned piece of armour that doubles a player's health — a boost previously thought vital to a successful run — that's seen speedrunners feel the need to go out of their way, wasting precious seconds in order to grab it.

Feature: Tee Lopes Talks Sonic, Streets Of Rage, And Making Music On A PS1

Posted: 16 Aug 2021 07:00 AM PDT

"Video games were a portal that allowed me to discover music".

Fans of certain beloved Sega franchises should be very familiar with this composer's name by now. Tee Lopes started out on the VGM scene releasing remixed and reimagined versions of some of gaming's most beloved music, with a special focus on one blue hedgehog in particular, and his compositions and arrangements now sit alongside those of series legends such as Masato Nakamura, Jun Senoue and Yuzo Koshiro in the Sonic canon.

His talent and passion garnered the attention of the right people over the last decade, and in recent years he's supplied the soundtrack for the brilliant Sonic Mania (a game that's now four-years-old!) as well as the Mr. X Nightmare DLC for Streets of Rage 4, and his work will also be heard in the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge and Metal Slug Tactics. If you've got a retro revival in the works and want to capture the spirit of a treasured series while also taking the audio to new and exciting places, it seems Tee Lopes is your go-to composer.

As you might expect, we're all lovers of game audio here at Nintendo Life, from retro-flavoured chiptunes to sweeping orchestral scores; from the old-school 'bips' and 'beeps' of sport and cosmic combat to chilling tunes that still have the power to induce blind panic; from twee ditties to earworms that had us spending far too much time perusing digital stores. We'll be celebrating all that and much more over the coming days and weeks in a Proms-style summer celebration of the aural delights of gaming.

Sonic Mania Is Now 4 Years Old

Posted: 16 Aug 2021 01:45 AM PDT

A game that brought Sonic back to his best.

Sonic Mania is now four years old, which may not be a huge landmark but, well, this Sonic-nerd wants to celebrate it anyway. It is the game, after all, that reminds players old and new that, actually, there's more to Sonic than 'alright' 3D platformers.

Created by a group of small developers and super-fans with SEGA's blessing (and actual financial backing, to be fair), it was the first full 2D retro-styled Sonic game in a couple of decades when it landed on assorted systems, including the Nintendo Switch. We described it as 'Sonic back to his best' in our review and, well, this scribe stands by that.
