Random: Portal 2's Intro Was Apparently Inspired By Super Metroid's Opening

Posted: 28 Feb 2022 09:30 PM PST

Game's project lead reveals all.

The 1994 action-adventure Super Metroid is arguably the best entry in the mainline Metroid series and as a result, it's inspired many other games over the years.

One game that you may not have realised took a little bit of inspiration is Valve's 2011 puzzle-platform game is Portal 2. Speaking to Kiwi Talkz, the game's project lead, Joshua Weier, mentioned how the game's opening was directly inspired by Super Metroid and was used to overcome a small problem.

When Sonic's original on-screen look was first revealed, there was an uproar from fans around the world.

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax Won't Be Getting An Important Online Upgrade On Switch

Posted: 28 Feb 2022 01:30 PM PST

*sad punch*.

Bad news for fighting game fans: It looks like Persona 4 Arena Ultimax will be getting rollback netcode on PlayStation and PC, but not the Nintendo Switch.

Rollback netcode is something that fighting games use to reduce lag and reduce network latency in online fighting matches, which is vitally important when playing a game that requires precision timings.

Video: Three Pokémon Games In One Year? Game Freak, Slow Down

Posted: 28 Feb 2022 11:30 AM PST

Scarlet and Violet aren't even opposites.

It seems like only yesterday that Pokémon Legends: Arceus came out. And although it wasn't yesterday, it was only... one month ago. That's basically no time at all in the world of video games, and we've just received word that the next Pokémon game is not only in the works — it's ready to be revealed, and it's coming out later this year. Can someone check that Game Freak haven't been locked in their office?

It's pretty unusual for two Pokémon games to be released in such a short time, even with the added complications of the pandemic, and Pokémon Legends being entirely different from other mainline Pokémon games. And don't forget: The Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl remakes came out in late 2021, which means we're currently on track for three Pokémon games in a single year.

Tokyo Game Show Will Return To Being An In-Person Event This September

Posted: 28 Feb 2022 11:00 AM PST

Online programs also available.

Tokyo Game Show is a yearly video game convention held in Chiba, Japan, usually focused on Japanese games and releases. It was held virtually in 2020, and a combination of online and in-person (for business only) in 2021, thanks to the ongoing COVID pandemic, but it will return to being a fully in-person event this year.

In the announcement of the event (via Gematsu), the organisers outlined the theme — "Nothing Stops Gaming" — and described 2022 as "the year to show the real spirit of games," inviting everyone to "show your love of games to each other" after being forced to "give up doing fun things one after another over these two years".

My Famicase Exhibition 2022 Is Now Accepting Entries For Fictional Famicom Cartridges

Posted: 28 Feb 2022 10:30 AM PST

Fantastic fan-made fideo games.

The My Famicase Exhibition is a long-standing tradition for artists who love retro games. Every year, Meteor — a Japanese retro game and goods shop — opens up applications for anyone who wants to be a part of the art, and all you have to do is design a cover for a Famicom cartridge. They're now accepting submissions for the 2022 exhibition.

When the exhibition opens, these cartridges will be printed and displayed, and even though they're not real games, just plastic shells, it's still a really neat thing to be a part of — and there is a game jam in which people can make their favourite cases a reality!

Soapbox: As A Recent Pokémon Convert I'm Excited For Scarlet And Gen 9

Posted: 28 Feb 2022 10:00 AM PST

#TeamScarlet.

Soapbox articles give our team a chance to share some personal perspectives; today it's the turn of Tom Whitehead to admit he might be a Pokémon fan now.

Back in early January I wrote about how Pokémon Legends: Arceus would be my first game in the series, a confession for which I was instructed to recite 10 'Pika-Pika' chants and read the Pokédex 5 times. Well, dear readers, I've played it. The good news is I've very much enjoyed it, even if my progress has been slow (I haven't seen the credits yet).

Co-Op Beat-'Em-Up 'Young Souls' Punches In A March Release Date On Switch

Posted: 28 Feb 2022 09:30 AM PST

It's not a FromSoft game. They're busy.

March is a massive month for games, and it just keeps getting bigger. When we're not eating cars in Kirby and the Forgotten Land, making decisions about shapes in Triangle Strategy, and wooing the locals with homegrown turnips in Rune Factory 5, perhaps we can also beat up monsters with friends in Young Souls, a rather lovely-looking co-op RPG that's coming to Switch!

Young Souls is a 2D brawler with a story, starring two pink-haired twins with a penchant for punching. When their foster father gets kidnapped, they begin a journey through the Moon Gate portal, fighting alongside each other as either a single-player or a split-screen co-op experience.

Gobble it up.

Pac-Man Museum+ was announced last year, with the promise of bringing warm and fuzzy retro arcade vibes to Switch. Though it's not going to hit the Q1 target that was previously set, Bandai Namco has now confirmed that it'll release on 27th May.

The new (and very loud) trailer highlights some key features, in particular showcasing the neat little arcade environment that you'll be able to customise and improve. Beyond earning virtual goodies you'll be able to play 14 Pac-Man games; the list is below as a reminder.

Hardware: The Taito Egret II Mini Is A Doorway Into True Gaming History

Posted: 28 Feb 2022 08:30 AM PST

Buyer's Egret?

Taito is a company with a rich history in the world of video gaming, and it's fair to say that if the Japanese veteran hadn't existed, the gaming landscape would look rather different today. Space Invaders arguably transformed interactive entertainment from a casual pastime into a global pop culture phenomenon, conquering not just its native Japan but the rest of the world, too. While Tomohiro Nishikado's seminal shooter is perhaps Taito's most famous accomplishment, its list of other classic titles is truly enviable. Bubble Bobble, Elevator Action, Darius, RayStorm, Qix, Rainbow Islands, Puzzle Bobble, Rastan, Chase H.Q., The Ninja Warriors… this is just a handful of the titles Taito has contributed to the medium over the decades and is barely scratching the surface.

While Taito has been a subsidiary of Square Enix since 2005 and it's reasonable to say that the glory days of the firm have long since passed, the Taito name retains a considerable degree of cachet, even with modern players. It's fitting, then, that the latest in the recent line of 'mini cabinets' – which includes the Neo Geo Mini and Sega Astro City Mini – should be focused on Taito's arcade output. Based on the company's iconic arcade system, the Egret II Mini is a tabletop console that features its own screen and controls but requires external power (via USB-C) to function. It offers HDMI-out functionality and boasts a robust micro-switched joystick and responsive buttons.

Random: This New Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Duplication Glitch Works With Korok Seeds

Posted: 28 Feb 2022 07:30 AM PST

We won't tell anyone you cheated.

There has to be a crossover on the Breath of the Wild Venn diagram between "people who really, really want all 900 Korok Seeds" and "people who don't mind cheating to get all 900 Korok Seeds", right? Good news for them: They can have their Korok cake and eat it, with this newly-discovered item duplication glitch!

The duplication glitch works for anything that can be stacked — star fragments, arrows, materials, food, and so on.

Review: Taito Milestones - An Oddly Meagre Collection Of Coin-Op Classics

Posted: 28 Feb 2022 07:00 AM PST

A muted celebration of an important developer.

A small "Powered by Arcade Archives" message sits in the corner of Taito Milestones' dual-purpose title/game select screen, a subdued seal of quality there to let players know the emulation within is of the same standard we've come to expect from Hamster's prolific series, with all the usual features (and even the exact same interface) present and correct. What this means in practice is the digital recreations of arcade classics found here sit somewhere in the middle ground between the extravagance (and expense) of M2's extraordinary work and the less desirable 'It mostly functions as it should' efforts of old; quietly reliable releases where the games themselves are always the main attraction.

So it's a good thing the ten titles selected for this collection cover an impressive range of genres, offering everything from scrolling beat 'em ups and single-screen platformers to good old fashioned sci-fi shooting and abstract territory snatch 'em ups. There's definitely something here for everyone (so long as they have a taste for the '80s) no matter what their mood, the arcade origins of these titles naturally making quick casual bursts of play effortlessly enjoyable. Anyone hoping to spend longer with an old favourite will be pleased to hear every game supports online leaderboards, so if you can crush everyone at Alpine Ski or have dedicated your life to mastering The Fairyland Story then you can finally show off your awesome skills to the entire world. Those with an eye for detail can spend their time marvelling at The Ninja Warriors specialist screen options, beautifully preserving the game's three monitor's worth of widescreen display with settings that go above and beyond scanlines and resizing, aiming instead to echo the more honest (if disjointed) extended monitor/mirror setup of the original arcade cabinet, complete with optional offset screens and mismatched tinting.

7th Sector Special Edition Up For Pre-Order From Strictly Limited Games

Posted: 28 Feb 2022 06:00 AM PST

Cyberpunk-y puzzles.

There are a good few companies that keep physical collectors happy in the Switch market, with Strictly Limited Games being another that gives download-only games a platform. Its latest option for pre-order is 7th Sector, with a couple of options for those that want to keep their collections up to date.

First of all, 7th Sector is a game that originally arrived on the eShop in February 2020, a time when lots of games were Cyperpunk themed. This one is also an interesting puzzle game, though, in which you control multiple machines and can influence the ending through your actions.

Retro-Bit's GameCube Component Cable Will Save You Some Pennies

Posted: 28 Feb 2022 05:30 AM PST

No need to sell a kidney!

Remember the GameCube's official component cable? Once upon a time, it was the best way to get a picture out of Nintendo's boxy-but-good home console, and its price reflected that – it cost around £60/$70 at launch but can fetch upwards of £200 these days.

Thankfully, there are other options in 2022. We've got HDMI adapters, for starters, but if you really want to go down the component route then you can pick up unofficial alternatives, such as the Carby cable or Retro-Bit's recently-released option.

Poll: Are You Excited About Pokémon Scarlet And Pokémon Violet?

Posted: 28 Feb 2022 05:00 AM PST

A new generation is coming this year.

Whether as part of a surprise strategy, out of respect for current events or a mix of both, the weekend's Pokémon Presents broadcast had very little publicity and build-up. The main English-language social media channels didn't even promote the event, with live stream pages only going live in the final hours before its start time. As a result we were suggesting keeping expectations low beforehand in the live blog, but it's just as well many of us tuned in.

With a trailer that seemed designed to make everyone think it was teasing Detective Pikachu 2, what we got was Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, which will be the first games of generation 9 and are coming this year. Of course this time of year is normally when the big November (presumably) games are unveiled, but with the recent release of Pokémon Legends: Arceus some had assumed gen 9 would have to wait until 2023; that's not the case.

Promotion Of Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Reveal "Significantly Reduced" Due To "Major World Events"

Posted: 28 Feb 2022 04:30 AM PST

"We decided to significantly reduce the promotion of the event".

The announcement of Pokémon Scarlet & Violet yesterday almost didn't happen, The Pokémon Company has revealed.

A statement has been released by the company which says that it wished to be "sensitive" to real-world events taking place right now – presumably a reference to Russia's ongoing invasion of its neighbour, Ukraine – but was unable to postpone the pre-scheduled event.

Nintendo's "Inhumane" Virtual Boy Testing Process Likened To 'A Clockwork Orange'

Posted: 28 Feb 2022 03:00 AM PST

"They put us under the most bizarre tests".

Earlier today, we reported on a new video from Did You Know Gaming that shines a light on the Virtual Boy F-Zero spin-off Zero Racers, which was once believed to be little more than a series of screenshots but appears to be have been totally finished.

The source is former Nintendo of America associate producer Jim Wornell, who, in the same interview, discusses the rather extreme testing process for the Virtual Boy console itself:

Switch Hits Hang Tough As Elden Ring Takes Over UK Chart

Posted: 28 Feb 2022 02:00 AM PST

Arceus shows solid momentum.

The latest UK chart results are now available, and there's no surprise to find Elden Ring (PS4/PS5/Xbox One/Xbox Series X|S) at the top; the latest FromSoftware title has had a huge amount of praise and hype up to and since its launch.

Fresh releases and major multiplatform games have seen the Switch representation in the top 10 get reduced this week, though Pokémon Legends: Arceus is still leading the way in 3rd place, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe just behind.

Mythical Virtual Boy F-Zero Spin-Off Was 100% Complete, According To Former NOA Staffer

Posted: 28 Feb 2022 01:30 AM PST

"Zero Racers was done".

The Virtual Boy might have gone down as one of Nintendo's most costly failures, but a dedicated and passionate fanbase has grown up around the system, and this group spends a lot of time looking into unreleased projects which could have potentially boosted the console's fortunes – one of which is F-Zero spin-off Zero Racers (also known as G-Racers).

Described as 'F-Zero in a tunnel', Zero Racers was previewed twice in Nintendo Power magazine but never actually saw the light of day. There were reports that it was shown off at E3 1996, but these appear to be false – a fact which has led many to speculate that the game was little more than a series of mocked-up screenshots and that the plug was pulled by Nintendo long before any serious development work was undertaken.

Feature: "I Think Studio Saizensen And I Will Make A Second Cotton Rock 'N' Roll”

Posted: 27 Feb 2022 10:00 AM PST

Cotton Fantasy devs on building a new entry for the iconic cute-'em-up series.

Over the decades Success Corporation has crafted a great many shmups that are distinct and captivating in equal measure. Games like the sublime Psyvariar, with its remarkable bullet grazing system and adaptive difficulty, or the curious, vibrant-yet-gritty multi-directional shooter Guardian Force.

None of Success' shooting games, however, can rival the impact of their 1991 cute-'em-up Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams. Thanks to energetic pacing, a delightfully vibrant world, and a protagonist witch with an abundance of idiosyncratic character, the original Cotton and its many sequels have become deeply cherished by the shmup community, and have had a profound influence on the evolution of both the cute-'em-up sub-genre, and 2D shooters more generally.
