Although it's not due out until later this week, one lucky fan known as "i_can_hear_the_world" on Reddit, has taken to the Nintendo Switch subreddit to share their excitement about receiving the game early in the mail.

Posted: 25 Apr 2022 01:00 PM PDT

Update incoming "to address a couple of crashes and minor UX issues".

Lovers of portable gaming and cool gadgets will no doubt have seen the reviews of Playdate go live last week. Panic's cute throwback console is a celebration of simpler gaming times and we were lucky enough to get our hands on one early — we found it to be a delightful little yellow system, one that sends us back "to a time when handheld video gaming was a simpler, more innocent pastime, and every new experience felt fresh and exciting".

Raven's Hike Aims To Get You Hooked With Budget Puzzle Platforming

Posted: 25 Apr 2022 12:00 PM PDT

Arrives this week on the eShop.

With the eShop having 30+ new games most weeks, it can be a pricey business if you're picking up titles regularly. We do get budget games to look at, too, and this week's eShop update (28th April) will bring Raven's Hike at $3.99USD (with regional variations, of course).

Its hook is 'no jumping, no walking', as you only use a grapple hook to work your way through 60+ levels. As a result each stage will ultimately be a big puzzle as you leap between walls dodging hazards.

Digital Foundry Reiterates That, No, Breath Of The Wild 2 Is "Not Too Big For Switch"

Posted: 25 Apr 2022 11:00 AM PDT

No need to save the rupees for a successor yet.

Those good ol' Switch 'Pro' rumours have been back in force since The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2's delay a few weeks ago. And with the new footage that dropped alongside news of the delay, so too did discussions around just how good it looked. In their weekly discussion, the team over at Digital Foundry brought up those lovely visuals recently. It looks like Breath of the Wild 2 was running extra smooth — perhaps too smooth.

The DF chaps went on to discuss suspicions that Breath of the Wild 2 could potentially be a cross-generation game that straddles both current hardware and a Switch successor — much like Breath of the Wild did with the previous generation. After some very enthusiastic reportage from some corners of the internet, this week they reiterated that no, that doesn't mean BOTW2 is not coming to Switch.

Chained Echoes Lets You Pilot Mechs In A World Of Dragons, And It's Coming To Switch This Year

Posted: 25 Apr 2022 09:30 AM PDT

A chain to the past.

The gorgeous pixel 16-bit RPG Chained Echoes finally has a release window! Developed by Matthias Linda and published by Deck13, who was responsible for bringing us the fantastic action RPG CrossCode, the game more than doubled its Kickstarter goal back in 2019, and one of the stretch goals included bringing the game to Switch!

We're finally going to see the fruits of this Kickstarter's success towards the end of the year, as Chained Echoes is projected to launch sometime in Q4 2022. The turn-based RPG already sported a gorgeous SNES-style visual flair back when it was announced, but it's really come into its own with a crisp, colourful world that blends a fantasy dragon landscape with Mechs! Not only can you travel the world in your robotic companions, but you can also engage in combat with them, just like in PS1 classic Xenogears, or the more recent Xenoblade Chronicles X.

It Sounds Like Pokémon GO's Mega Evolution System Is Being Revamped

Posted: 25 Apr 2022 08:45 AM PDT

Update: Mega Legendary Raids incoming.

Update Earlier today, the official Pokémon GO Twitter account tweeted a brief clip of the Mega Evolution symbol transforming from its monochrome look to something much more colourful and in-keeping with the main game's Mega symbol.

Fans have been speculating what will happen to the much-criticised Mega Evolution system in the game, but this seems to confirm that Niantic are working on changing things:

Review: Pocky & Rocky Reshrined - A Thrilling New Interpretation Of A SNES Classic

Posted: 25 Apr 2022 08:00 AM PDT

Rise and shrine.

Note: This review is based on the Japanese release — the game launches in North America and Europe on 24th June 2022.

Pocky & Rocky, a Super Nintendo top-down run-and-gun, was developer Natsume's gold standard, fondly remembered for its taut arcade action, adventurous stage design, and beautiful visuals. Where Tengo Project's Wild Guns Reloaded and Ninja Warriors Once Again were deliciously pumped-up remasters, Pocky & Rocky Reshrined is a re-envisioning so markedly different from the original that it's essentially an entirely new game. Completely redrawn from the ground up, it's nothing short of magical from the flute note ditty that dials-in the opening title screen to the first stretch of road and beyond. Fallen leaves are displaced as you skid across them, floating back down to settle on the cobbles; weather effects desaturate the world with sepia flashes; the special effects, particularly surrounding boss entrances, are dazzling.

Random: This Stunning Final Fantasy VI 'Terra Magitek Armour' Statue Costs A Small Fortune

Posted: 25 Apr 2022 07:45 AM PDT

How much gil!?

Final Fantasy VI merchandise has up jumping out of our seats in excitement. The much-beloved sixth entry in the legendary Final Fantasy series — which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year — rarely gets much attention from Square Enix. That's despite a successful PC and mobile remaster earlier this year as part of the Pixel Remaster series, which we desperately want on the Switch.

Well, perhaps there's a reason there hasn't been much merch for Final Fantasy VI — for one big blow-out celebration. Square Enix has unveiled an utterly gorgeous statue of one of the game's main protagonists, Terra, atop a Magitek armour. It's a recreation of the game's iconic logo, crafted in stunning detail. Just feast your eyes on it:

Kirby And The Forgotten Land Claims Third In March NPD Results

Posted: 25 Apr 2022 07:15 AM PDT

Triangle Strategy misses top 10.

The NPD results, which cover game sales in the US along with a lot of other data, are now emerging for March. Nintendo published or distributed two notable titles last month, and their results were mixed.

Though the full public data isn't due until 26th April, Axios writer Stephen Totilo has shared the non-mobile gaming chart (covering Steam, PlayStation, Xbox and of course Switch), which is based on dollar sales. It's worth nothing that Nintendo doesn't share its eShop data, so those download sales won't contribute.

Video: Let's Dissect The New Splatoon 3 Trailer

Posted: 25 Apr 2022 07:00 AM PDT

Alex stirs the paint pot.

After months of relative quiet, we finally found out when we would get to paint the town in Splatoon 3. On 9th September, the third entry in the ink-based shooter will be splatting onto the Switch. Before this, we'd only got a few glimpses of the Inklings and Octolings' upcoming sequel — only finding out in February about the return of Salmon Run.

Last Friday's new trailer dropped some fresh new gameplay footage from Turf Mode, which includes some aggressive new weapons, specials, and a little bit of death cam so you can taunt your friends when playing with them online even more than before.

Rumour: Ubisoft Being Eyed Up For A Potential Takeover

Posted: 25 Apr 2022 06:00 AM PDT

Another big company could be acquired.

It feels like every single month there's news of a new video game company acquisition. This year alone, we've seen Microsoft absorb Activision Blizzard, Sony buy former-Halo developer Bungie, Take-Two acquire the keys to Farmville developer, and Epic Games bring in Brazilian developer Aquiris. Now, there's another major acquisition rumour swirling around the industry.

Ubisoft — the hugely renowned publisher who has recently brought Immortals Fenyx Rising, Assassin's Creed: The Ezio Collection, and Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle to Switch — is reportedly being eyed up by a number of equity firms. Bloomberg reports that these firms include Blackstone and KKR, both of which have formally invested in gaming and technology-related companies.

New Trailer Highlights Nintendo Switch Sports As Part Of Fitness Regime

Posted: 25 Apr 2022 05:00 AM PDT

Along with try-hard online play.

When the Wii was launched alongside its iconic bundled game Wii Sports (apart from in Japan, where it was sold separately), trailers showed games of all ages and types getting off their butts and swinging a remote around. The Switch was able to recapture that a little in this generation, with Ring Fit Adventure proving to be a modern spiritual successor to Wii Fit, in particular.

The arrival of Nintendo Switch Sports this week will bring us a third generation of controller waving sport; don't forget Wii Sports Club on Wii U! Arriving over five years after the system launched, its place in the library is a little different as a result, and in the latest Japanese commercial we see Nintendo tying the game to Ring Fit Adventure as a natural part of an exercise routine. We see the player wrap up some exercises before jumping into an online match of badminton (and taking it quite seriously, too).

Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D Physical Prices Jump As eShop Closure Looms

Posted: 25 Apr 2022 04:00 AM PDT

Game still 'temporarily' unavailable to download due to license issues.

Hideo Kojima games not only feature the creator's name a few hundred times, they're also well known for being loaded with licensed content. This can be in the form of iconic music or even video clips to tie games into real history, a clever bit of storytelling often deployed in the Metal Gear series. Of course, licensed content often has an agreement expiry date, which impacted a number of legacy Metal Gear releases last year.

Among many other versions across different systems, Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D dropped off the 3DS eShop last November. It disappeared on 8th November last year - Konami cited "historical archive footage" as the issue and promised it was a temporary measure, though having checked this morning the game is still missing on the EU eShop. It's unclear whether Konami plans to replace the footage in the game, negotiate renewals for the footage or simply do nothing and hope no-one notices.

Disney's Upcoming Free-To-Play Switch Racer Reveals A Second Jungle Book Racer

Posted: 25 Apr 2022 03:30 AM PDT

They wanna be like Baloo.

Upcoming free-to-play racer Disney Speedstorm has revealed a brand new character today and, given its choice, it looks like Disney thought Baloo needed a friend.

Video: Wii Sports - What Makes It Iconic?

Posted: 25 Apr 2022 03:00 AM PDT

The legacy of a lovely family game.

Wii Sports has a heck of a legacy behind it. Packaged with the Wii console at launch, it's the best-selling single-platform game of all time, as well as the fourth best-selling game ever, behind only Tetris, Gran Theft Auto V, and Minecraft. Wrap your head around that.

It's no surprise, really. Being included with Nintendo's second-best-selling home console of all time (the Switch only overtook it last year), the Wii has shifted more than 100 million units in its lifetime. And if someone had a Wii, it was likely that they also had Wii Sports. The universality of Wii Sports was unstoppable. Motion controls certainly had their... off moments, but Wii Sports embraced the ease of swinging a Wii Remote around. You could play it, your parents could play it, your grandparents could probably thrash you at bowling — everyone could play it. It embraced Nintendo's family-friendly philosophy better than almost anything else before it.

UK Charts: Kirby Crashes Out Of The Top Ten As LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga Retains Top Spot

Posted: 25 Apr 2022 01:45 AM PDT

No need to use the Force.

It's a familiar story with this week's UK chart; LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is still sitting comfortably at the top, and given that it's set records to become the biggest LEGO game launch ever, we're not surprised. The Nintendo Switch version is also the best-selling version of the lot, making up 29% of the total sales, with the PS5 release selling 26%.

Right behind the newest LEGO game is FIFA 22, with a few Switch favourites — Pokémon Legends: Arceus and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe — creeping up a couple of places.

Review: Blast Brigade Vs. The Evil Legion Of Dr. Cread - Fabulous But Formulaic Metroidvania-ing

Posted: 24 Apr 2022 10:00 AM PDT

Approach this With Arms Wide Open.

Hello, Nintendo fans, and welcome to a review of another Metroidvania. You'll be thrilled to know that this one is good, and if you enjoy the Metroidvania genre, you'll enjoy playing Blast Brigade. Alright, cheers.

What?? You want more?!? Oh, god. Okay. It's just that there are so many of these games and so little more to say about them. We speak the truth, though, when we deem Blast Brigade to be good. It is a strong effort in all respects and we will endeavour to expand on that forthwith. That means now. Stop looking at this paragraph, it's in the next one.
