| Less is More: Balancing Narrative and Action in Frightence Posted: 31 Mar 2022 02:00 PM PDT As a solo developer and producer who has released several titles for all consoles before, Frightence holds a special affection for me because it is the first title that I did with a team, albeit a tiny team of three talented first-time developers who helped me shape the narrative aspects of Frightence. I've developed three horror titles before and realized that through the journey of pitfalls of indie-game development, balancing narrative and action is a real hurdle.  As an indie developer, you not only try to overcome major obstacles like budget concerns but technical troubles as well. Luckily for us, developing for the Xbox consoles was very comforting process. The IDXbox team were gravely patient and helpful with us during the certification process of Frightence. Knowing our engine, which is Unreal Engine 4 to be exact, also helped us a lot to actualize our vision. Our vision for Frightence was simple : Make a short, yet intense and atmospheric horror experience. We wanted to keep the interactive elements simple from ground-up and wanted to players to focus on the narrative concept that we were trying to establish. One of the major ensnares for indie horror games is to write the background story "too much"…The players know that they are playing a relatively short-budgeted indie game so they want to experience something more unique, contrasting and distinguishable. So, what we did for Frightence was to write a multi-layered and deep story with several different characters and created a storyline for the player to experience only a glimpse of it. It was really difficult for us to cut out most of our literary material but it was necessary for us to finalize the game the way we envisioned it. The players will meet several interestingly enough macabre characters during Frightence but will only experience a fraction of their lives. This might sound like a risk that can alienate some types of players, but, hey, what's the point of being an independent developer if you can't be bold enough to take such risks? In the end, Frightence is a short horror game but it is full of provoking incidents and shivery and eerie characters in every step you make, and for most of the characters you meet in Frightence, it might be your one and only time to encounter them. We believe this opens a door to a re-playability and myriad number of possibilities for a sequel as well. We are eagerly awaiting audiences responses to each layers of background story in Frightence. Here is also an interesting question: When you encounter an interesting character only once in a horror game, how does that character impact you? The answer is simple : You will start imagining things about that character. And we believe triggering a player's imagination in a horror game is the best an indie developer can achieve in this genre. It would be our ultimate reward as developers for Frightence. After months of preseason testing and several monthly updates, the first season of Anvil: Vault Breakers is finally here. This is the update you've all been waiting for! We worked day and night to bring you the most exciting season and are thrilled to present our accomplishments. With new game mode, Breaker, relics, bosses, among others, this is an update you don't want to miss! The update is free to all players who bought the game as Game Preview on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, or players who have access to it with Xbox Game Pass.  Season Challenge mode The Season Challenge mode is the highlight of this update. This will be our core roguelike game mode that creates different challenges every season. Unlike previous game modes where each stage was determined randomly and the number of stages and difficulty was capped, you, the player, can now push your limits in the infinite difficulty available and create your own paths. The higher difficulty you choose to venture to, the greater the end reward will be. Rewards will include new weapons to unlock as well as a chance to obtain rare relics and Crons. I'm Yared from Whitethorn Games, and I'd like to introduce to you our latest release, Princess Farmer, available today in the Xbox Store! Our wonderful friends at Samobee Games have crafted a cute and colourful combination of a visual novel and match-3 with a unique twist on its puzzle gameplay.  The story begins with an unassuming, hard-working bunny tending to a farm. She's a simple bun, wanting nothing more than to snack on a tasty carrot and relax after a long day's work. Just as she's about to wrap up for the day, she stumbles upon a lost tube of lipstick before heading home. That night, she vividly dreams of meeting a powerful bunny-goddess named Gaia, who tells her that the lipstick she found was actually a magical artifact. By finding it, she has now become the new Princess Farmer, inheriting the power to pull, replant, and match veggies-a power she must now use to save the world!  The core puzzle gameplay involves plucking veggies (up to a stack of five) and replanting them to shift columns of brightly coloured crops up and down. Aligning at least three of the same vegetable will match them, clearing them from the field and shifting everything below up to fill the gap. More points are awarded for diagonal matches, and combos multiply score earned. The objectives and mechanics also change from puzzle to puzzle, bringing additional variance to the gameplay. On one plot you might need to match carrots while avoiding potatoes, while the next might only allow diagonal matches as you score against a clock. This is the default way to play the game, but when selecting an episode, the player can select their preferred playstyle. "Balanced Bun" is the default mix of all types, while "Puzzle Bun" focuses on slower, more methodical goals. And for those of you who are all about speed and combo chains, "Action Bun" is the playstyle for you. Additionally, if you have a friend over, you can play through each episode in local co-op!  As you progress through the story, you will meet other bunnies (and non-bunnies) with unique, equally endearing personalities and traits. Garlic, the first bunny you meet, can speak to animals. Carrot is a genius inventor and creates a robo-bun to help you on your journey. Rowan is an anti-social bookworm who runs a traveling Hare-dye Shoppe. And at this shop you can spend hearts earned from completing puzzles to purchase different colours and sparkle effects to customize your outfits. These outfits and other customizations can also be earned through gifts at the end of each episode, depending on your relationships with characters. We also made sure you weren't paying extra because why would a complete next-gen upgrade cost more than buying everything separately?
