Halo Infinite: 343 Industries Says 'We Understand the Community Is Simply Out Of Patience' Posted: 02 Apr 2022 01:55 PM PDT While Halo Infinite has been positively received by many, the lack of new content in its multiplayer has led to frustration for some fans. 343 Industries has spoken up on this issue and has said that it does "understand the community is simply out of patience." 343 community director Brian Jarrard took to Reddit to speak to Halo Infinite fans and let them know that the team is "certainly not happy to be unable to meet player and community expectations." However, he also reassures that meaningful content is on the way, it just unfortunately takes time. "There are indeed a lot of challenges and constraints," Jarrard said. "We're certainly not happy to be unable to meet player and community expectations, it's a difficult situation that's going to take the team time to work through. Right now the focus is on S2 and we'll have more to share on that in the coming weeks." "Meanwhile a lot of production planning, costing, planning, hiring, etc.. is all happening which doesn't really lend to detailed regular updates. We understand the community is simply out of patience and frankly, I think understandably tired of words. We just need some time for the team to get the details sorted and then we can certainly share as much as we can." 343 has already revealed a bit of what fans can expect from Season 2, which is titled Lone Wolves, including new maps, armor, and characters that will push forward multiplayer's story that will be told over "a mix of cinematics, story-themed Events, Battle Pass items, and more." Halo Infinite's second season will begin on May 3, 2022, and will also see a free-for-all elimination mode called Last Spartan Standing, a new mode called Land Grab, and the return of King of the Hill. Elden Ring: Margit's Shackle Has a Secret Alternate Use Posted: 02 Apr 2022 01:19 PM PDT Margit's Shackle is an item you can find in Elden Ring that will make the difficult Margit the Fell Omen boss battle easier. However, the item appears to be good for much more as it can seemingly help you discover hidden illusory walls and stop fire-breathing traps. As reported by GamesRadar, Margit's Shackle can stop Margit the Fell Omen in his tracks for a few seconds when activated, but its usefulness does not end once that great enemy has been felled. NateThePunk2 on Reddit is one of those who discovered that it can also cause a nearby hidden wall to disappear. A running theory is that the item sends out an invisible shockwave of sorts that stuns Margit the Fell Omen if he is within a certain range. This same shockwave appears to extend out from the player and reveal illusory walls and stop fire-breathing traps. Margit's Shackle can be obtained while you are on Patches' questline, and obtaining it is especially helpful if Margit, the game's first major boss, is proving to be too much of a challenge. For more, check out our full Elden Ring Wiki, where you can check out our strategy to beat Margit and the location of every illusory wall that has been discovered so far. Have a tip for us? Former BioWare GM Reflects On Witcher 3's Biggest Advantage Over Dragon Age: Inquisition Posted: 01 Apr 2022 12:43 PM PDT Fair or not, Dragon Age: Inquisition is often compared with The Witcher 3. Released just a few months beforehand, Dragon Age: Inquisition garnered Game of the Year awards and was generally praised by critics, but wound up drawing unfavorable comparisons to CD Projekt Red's seminal RPG. But The Witcher 3 had at least one major advantage over its competition. Speaking with GLHF for an article on USA Today, former BioWare GM Aaryn Flynn pointed out that CDPR's decision to focus on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC benefited the project immensely compared to Dragon Age: Inquisition, which also had to work on Xbox 360 and PS3. "I'd say the biggest compromise came from the fact that we had to ship [Dragon Age: Inquisition] on the Xbox 360 and PS3 at the same time as we did on the PS4 and Xbox One," Flynn remembers. "That crushed so much ambition because we didn't have the team size or the time to differentiate those things, truly. So you had to kind of develop the lowest common denominator. And as that came in, that certainly beat out some expectations and ambitions we had for certain fun features in gameplay. In contrast, CD Projekt didn't do that with The Witcher 3, a few months later, and I think their game was better for it." Released at the tail end of 2014, Dragon Age: Inquisition was a sprawling RPG based on exploration, relationship-building, and recruiting new characters to your growing headquarters. It was noted for the scope of its world, but criticized for its somewhat basic combat system and surplus of fetch quests. Behind the scenes, Flynn says that BioWare struggled not just with fitting their massive RPG on previous-gen consoles, but with EA's proprietary Frostbite Engine. Flynn describes working within the constraints of an engine originally created to support DICE's Battlefield series as a "herculean effort." "To bend it to make RPG elements was certainly a challenge," Flynn says. "It resulted in compromises and things that we certainly didn't want to do if it weren't for the technology limitations. But the team found incredibly clever and reasonable ways around that whenever they could. I haven't touched it in five years, so I can't tell you where it's at now, but I still see the bugs being recorded by players and other games and go, 'Ah, that's too bad.'" Frostbite has been something of a sore point for EA over the years. FIFA and Madden both struggled to adapt to the engine, and NHL refused to use the technology until the release of NHL 22. Whenever development struggles have arisen at EA, the Frostbite Engine has tended to be at the center of it. But BioWare has struggled more than most. Dragon Age: Inquisition, Mass Effect: Andromeda, and Anthem all had issues as BioWare dealt with poor internal support and built new tools from scratch. Its most successful project since Dragon Age: Inquisition — Mass Effect Legendary Edition — stuck with the older Unreal Engine 3. "Being a programmer, I underestimated the difficulty that Frostbite was presenting to our dev teams, and I wish I'd have done a better job of communicating that to the top brass at EA," Flynn says. "I wish I'd been understanding of the friction the engine created for us building a very different kind of game. I see it now in the news reports and in the press, so I kind of get it, but I think I could have done a better job. I could have used the fact that I had a history of engineering to better communicate things rather than believing and trusting the way engineers are smart, we'll figure it out as we sometimes have in the past." These days Flynn is the CEO of Inflexion Games, a new studio that is working on Nightingale, a survival game that will allow players to explore a "seemingly endless" number of Fae-inhabited realms. As for BioWare, it's still working on Dragon Age 4, which has reportedly been rebooted multiple times over the course of its development process. BioWare says that it is currently "right in the middle of production," and that the new game will focus on a single-player experience. There is no word on a release date for the project. Destiny 2: Where Is Xur Today? Location and Exotic Items for April 2 Posted: 01 Apr 2022 11:45 AM PDT The freaky hooded creature, Xûr, is now live in Destiny 2 for the weekend until next week's reset. If you're looking to get your some shiny new Exotic armor or weapons for your Guardian, look no further. Each week, Xûr has a random assortment of Exotic armor, one for each Guardian class, as well as a random Exotic Weapon and an Exotic Engram available for purchase. In addition to his Exotic wares, he's got a random collection of Legendary weapons and armor to deck out your Guardians. We've rounded up all the info on Xûr for the week including where to find Xûr, which Exotic weapons and armor are available, as well as which Legendary weapons you should pick up, either for PvE or PvP. Where Is Xûr Today?Xûr can be found at Watcher's Grave on Nessus on April 2 through April 5. To reach him, travel to the landing point at Watcher's Grave. When you arrive, make for the red moss-covered tree straight ahead. Climb up the roots and you'll find Xûr waiting at the top. What's Xûr Selling Today?More terrible armor from our friend this week, but we did get a few good weapons to use in The Witch Queen's Throne World. Check it out! Exotic Engram Tractor Cannon - Exotic Shotgun Oathkeepers - Exotic Hunter Gauntlets
Helm of Saint-14 - Exotic Titan Helmet
Contraverse Hold - Exotic Warlock Gauntlets
Tractor Cannon is a great weapon if you haven't grabbed it yet, so scoop it up if you haven't yet. The armor this week is low-stat again and can be skipped unless you need it for collections. Exotic WeaponsHawkmoon - Exotic Hand Cannon
Dead Man's Tale - Exotic Scout Rifle
Hawkmoon and Dead Man's Tale are great weapons to add to your collection, but neither roll this week is especially stellar. Scoop 'em up if you need 'em, but otherwise you can wait for some better rolls. Legendary WeaponsWishbringer - Shotgun
Gnawing Hunger - Auto Rifle
Temptation's Hook- Sword
Death Adder - Submachine Gun
Ikelos_SG_V1.0.2 - Shotgun
The Swarm - Machine Gun
Extraordinary Rendition - Submachine Gun
Not much to love in the Legendary Weapons category this week. The Swarm's roll is another God Roll in case you missed the last few but aside from that there's little to love in the way of weapons. Before we get started on armor, I think I should note that Bungie recently identified a bug going on where Xûr's armor is being pulled straight from the Collections listing and is rolling with static, very low stats. This is supposed to be fixed in the future, but we don't have a specific date for that yet. Until then we'll be looking at some pretty sad armor sets, unfortunately.... Sony Has Reportedly Laid Off 90 Amid Shift Away From Retail Posted: 01 Apr 2022 11:35 AM PDT Sony PlayStation has reportedly laid off around 90 employees in North America in an apparent move to focus more on direct-to-consumer marketing over brick-and-mortar sales. According to a report by Axios, Sony is shutting down its "merchandiser" team in the US, a group that included individuals whose job it was to connect with retail store staff and prepare them to sell PlayStation products. Other retail marketing jobs were also impacted by the layoffs. Leadership reportedly explained the cuts as a part of a "global transformation" of Sony's sales and business operations. This suggests a move away from focusing on retail sales in favor of direct-to-consumer marketing, especially as digital sales of games continue to grow and thrive. Sony has yet to comment on the layoffs. In the same week, Sony unveiled its Xbox Game Pass competitor in a revamped PlayStation Plus, combining the existing PS Plus and PS Now into a three-tier subscription service including up to 700 games. The service is planned to start rolling out in June, and will include a number of first-party titles such as Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel's Spider-Man, and others at launch. However, first-party exclusives will not be launched into the service, unlike Xbox Game Pass. Sony has also been in the process of expanding its PlayStation Direct program, effectively an online store for it to sell consoles, games, and merchandise direct to consumers without going through retailers. The service started in 2019 in the US, and late last year began to expand to Europe and the UK. Rebekah Valentine is a news reporter for IGN. You can find her on Twitter @duckvalentine. |
Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical's Narrative Choices Will be Familiar to Dragon Age Fans Posted: 01 Apr 2022 09:45 AM PDT David Gaider and the team at Summerfall Games are combining their love of narrative and music with Stray Gods, a roleplaying musical. But fans who are familiar with Gaider's past work as lead writer on Dragon Age will find that Summerfall Games is pursuing a similar route for how their story unfolds, albeit much more musically. Stray Gods is the first game from Summerfall Studios, an Australian-based team of veterans and rising stars across the industry. Stray Gods centers on Grace, a singer who inherits the powers of the Last Muse. The problem is that Grace now has to convince the other gods that she wasn't responsible for the Muse's death. As a narrative RPG, players will not only make dialogue choices but lyrical ones as well. And considering Gaider was the lead writer on Dragon Age, fans of his work at BioWare will find similarities in Stray Gods. "If someone has played the Dragon Age games, the dialogue part of the game is going to feel very familiar to them," Gaider tells IGN in an interview. "It is playing the dialogue portion with the story and making choices during the dialogue, having traits that determine sometimes which options are available to you, and it changes the story. Lots of branching along the way, so yeah, it will feel quite familiar." Where Stray Gods charts its own path is the music which, along with Journey composer Austin Wintory and a team of lyricists, looks to bring narrative choices directly into a musical. "The choice is in the music. That's really the key to the entire project because we have about four hours total content of music that we've planned, but a player's only going to hear a smaller portion of that," Gaider says. He explains that it's similar to a Broadway musical where it's not just about the beat or chorus line in the lyrics, but about the emotion and story conveyed during the song. "So you're making choices as you go, and they're timed so that you can maintain sort of the consistency and the flow of the song. And the choices you make determine how the song evolved. So it's not just what the next lyrics are, the music itself actually changes." Along with Wintory, the music team includes Montaigne, Australia's Eurovision representative for the last two years, as well as Scott Edgar, Steven Gates, and Simon Hall, a team of local lyricists based out of Melbourne. Of course, a team working on a musical adventure will naturally have favorite musicals they can look towards. "One of my favorites is Into the Woods, and I know that is a reference we keep using," says Gaider. "I also keep going to the Buffy musical [episode] as well, just because that is an example… of the musical numbers being diegetic, as in it's a conceit as part of the story as well. Plus, it is actually a really good musical." Gaider and Summerfall Games co-founder Liam Esler also cite Hadestown, which coincidentally is a Broadway musical about Greek gods also. But Summerfall's team of veteran writers and musicians have a unique vision of their own with Stray Gods. Check here for everything announced at this year's Humble Games Showcase. Matt T.M. Minecraft Briefly Got Raytracing on Xbox Consoles - But It Was a Mistake Posted: 01 Apr 2022 04:16 AM PDT Microsoft seemingly began testing raytracing in Minecraft earlier this week, but it was actually a mistake. The feature has now been pulled. The feature appeared in a preview update on Xbox consoles, but it was quickly removed after news spread about its inclusion. The update included a raytracing preview for both Xbox Series X and Series S consoles but, according to Microsoft, it should never have appeared in the first place. "The previous Minecraft Preview build available to Xbox Insiders inadvertently included prototype code for raytracing support on Xbox consoles," the company confirmed. "This early prototype code has been removed from Preview and doesn't signal near future plans to bring raytracing support to consoles."
That's right – just because they're testing it, doesn't mean Minecraft will be getting raytracing on Xbox consoles anytime soon – even though Microsoft teased raytracing support two years ago. Although Microsoft has now nixed the update and explained that it won't be coming to your Xbox consoles anytime soon, it does mean that Microsoft is clearly working on the feature. Essentially, it could make its way to Xbox consoles… eventually. Raytracing is currently only available in Minecraft when playing on Windows and is boosted by Nvidia's DLSS upscaling process to improve frame rates. A comparison of Minecraft with raytracing switched on and off shows just how impressive this feature could be: Elsewhere, a long-lost Minecraft update was recently found by Minecraft historians. The Secret Saturday update (Alpha 1.1.1) appeared for only 3 hours back in 2010. Considering the now-elusive nature of the recent raytracing update, it begs the question of whether Xbox users will one day preserve this now-defunct Minecraft version. Or has auto-update relegated it to the mists of time? Want to read more about Minecraft? Check out our beginner's guide for all the basics as well as our hints and tips for survival. Nintendo Shows Off How Miis Will Look in Switch Sports Posted: 31 Mar 2022 04:49 PM PDT Nintendo Switch Sports, a spiritual successor to Wii Sports, will let players create and play with unique avatars. But that doesn't mean Miis are going anywhere. In Nintendo Switch Sports, players can create a Sports Mate, a detailed avatar they can create and customize. But in the original Wii Sports, players were able to use Miis as their athletic counterparts. Well, they still can in Nintendo Switch Sports. In the official Nintendo Switch Sports overview trailer, Nintendo detailed the process of creating a Sports Mate. But for the fans of Miis, you can still use your custom avatar, though their head will be attached to a slightly more detailed body as you can see in the image below. You might want to create a Sports Mate. Jokes aside, it's nice that the upcoming Nintendo Switch Sports will have the option of using either a Sports Mate or Mii avatar. Though not a direct sequel, Nintendo Switch Sports will bring various, motion-controlled sports minigames to the Switch. Nintendo will also be adding new sports games post-launch with golf planned for Fall 2022. Wii Sports was an iconic game for the Wii-era and popularized Nintendo's home system. Nintendo followed up with Wii Sports Resort which utilized the added accuracy of the Wii Motion Plus for even more games. Check out our review for Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort here. Matt T.M. Posted: 31 Mar 2022 08:05 AM PDT It has finally happened. We've reached a point where you can usually find a new Xbox Series X|S console in stock. The Xbox Series S is pretty much always available at most retailers, and the Series X has become pretty easy to find as well in recent weeks. Stock of it still comes and goes, but you can often find it somewhere. It's about time. Below, you'll find links to all the places you can currently purchase a brand-new Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S. You might even find a deal on one. Let's get to it. Xbox Series X in StockLooking to pick up an Xbox Series X? It's available at the retailers above, either all on its own or in a bundle with some other stuff like gift cards, games, and controllers. Best Xbox Series S DealsAmazon has both the standard Xbox Series S and the Fortnite & Rocket League bundle, which gets you some in-game extras for those games. In fact, most of the retailers below have these consoles in stock, so check another one if you prefer it over Amazon. Where to Buy Xbox Series AccessoriesYou can count on it: along with a new console generation comes a new line of accessories. Microsoft and third parties have introduced an improved controller, a new wireless headset, and a few other items. That said, in keeping with Microsoft's efforts to smooth the transition between console generations, all (or nearly all) Xbox One peripherals are also fully compatible with the Series X and S. All Xbox Series X Links![]() All Xbox Series S Links![]() Here's the list of links where you can find Xbox Series S at all the big retailers. All Xbox Series S Fortnite & Rocket League Bundle Links![]() The Xbox Series S Fortnite & Rocket League Bundle includes a standard Series S, plus some in-game goodies for Fortnite and Rocket League. Here's what you get: Fortnite
Rocket League
It's no surprise that Microsoft's new-generation consoles are tough to find. With many people upgrading to new TVs, they want a console that can make full use of the newest features. Xbox Series X is geared toward 4K TVs, while the Series S is optimized for 1440p output. But either console brings great new features like Smart Delivery (seamless upgrade to the next-gen version of games), 120 frames-per-second gameplay, and zippy loading speeds. The first thing you need are the retailer links for the new hardware. But if you click them at any random time, chances are minuscule that you'll find them in stock. How do you know when they come into stock? Follow Xbox Series X|S Trackers on TwitterWhile some retailers announce ahead of time when they have incoming Xbox stock, others just like to surprise people. In either case, your best bet for knowing when Xbox Series X and Series S are in stock is by following a Twitter account that tracks such things. If you really want a new console, you can also turn on notifications for when they tweet. Here are some accounts to follow to know when new stock is available: Tips for Getting an Xbox Series XPrepare Your Accounts at All the Retailers On all the devices you might use to try to purchase a next-gen console, make sure you're signed on all the major retailer sites. It's also wise to keep your credit card on file so you don't have to mess with entering your details while the clock ticks down while you try to check out. Speaking of retailers, each of the major retailers has its own quirks for dealing with Xbox Series X and S when it comes back into stock. Here's what to expect from each one. AmazonAmazon is all about surprise. The online retailer never announces when new Xbox stock will arrive and be available. When new consoles come in, Amazon just switches its "Sold Out" button to "Add to Cart," and whoever happens to see it in time can try adding it to their cart. Your best bet here is to follow IGN Deals or another Twitter account dedicated to such things. Best BuyBest Buy also tends to get new stock out of the blue. When it does, here's how it works: you press the button to add the Xbox Series X or S to your cart. If you're lucky, you'll go straight through to checkout. If you're not so lucky, the "Add to Cart" button will turn gray and after a couple of minutes it will turn yellow again, and you'll have to tap the button again. Then the game starts over: the lucky few will go through to checkout, while the rest will have to wait until the button turns yellow again to try once more until all stock has sold through. GameStopGameStop tends to announce it will have new Xbox stock ahead of it going live on the site. And in addition to standalone Xboxes, it also offers bundles that include a new Xbox Series X or S, plus games, controllers, etc. The bundling thing is something of a double-edged sword. If you're lucky enough to get a bundle of items you would have bought anyway it's no problem. But if the only Xbox you can manage to get is one that's bundled with items you don't want, it's not so nice. WalmartWalmart is actually the best of all the retailers when it comes to announcing upcoming Xbox stock before it goes live. Sometimes the retailer lets you know a day or several days in advance. They even say exactly when to expect new stock to arrive, usually either at 11:30 a.m. PT or 12 p.m. PT of the day it's set to happen. Also unusual is that Walmart releases its stock in batches. Each batch sells out in a matter of minutes, but a new batch gets released 10 minutes later until all the stock is gone. On the plus side, this gives you a number of opportunities to try to get an Xbox at Walmart. It also gives you a chance to get one even if you don't visit the site right at the moment they go live the first time. But on the downside, if you don't manage to snag one all afternoon, it can be a big waste of time, and it can feel extra demoralizing. Chris Reed is a commerce editor and deals expert at IGN.
