Sega Has Considered Dreamcast & Saturn Mini But Is Worried About Extreme Costs

Posted: 04 Jun 2022 10:55 PM PDT

You can thank the pandemic.

One of the highlights of the week was the announcement of the Mega Drive Mini 2 - Sega's next miniature console, loaded with 50 games from the Mega Drive and Mega CD libraries. It's launching this October in Japan and will include games like Sonic CD, Slipstream and Virtua Racing.

As exciting as this news is, it hasn't stopped fan requests for miniature versions of Sega's other consoles - like the Saturn and Dreamcast. So, why did Sega decide to release a Mega Drive 2 instead of something else? During an interview with Famitsu, Sega's classic hardware producer Yosuke Okunari explained how the pandemic shaped the outcome.

Feature: How The Quintessential Essence Of Pokémon Games Inspires Gen After Gen

Posted: 04 Jun 2022 10:00 AM PDT

Insight from Pokémon World Champions and Temtem's Director.

In 1998 my Canadian elementary school banned everything to do with Pokémon. The games, the trading cards, and discussions about the anime – all of it was off-limits as Pocket Monster fever swept through North America like a swarm of Rattata, distracting us from our in-class reading of Anne of Green Gables. That did not stop me and my classmates from passing notes about whether or not there really was a Mew beneath the truck parked near the S.S. Anne when Mrs. Hubbard turned her back. Nor did it stop us from pitying those poor souls whose parents would not buy them a Game Boy, let alone a copy of Pokémon Red or Blue. To us, that was a step removed from child abuse.

Many people can relate similar anecdotes about playing the quintessentially classic Red and Blue. By 'quintessential' I mean Pokémon games stand out as some of the most memorable and influential gaming experiences ever made. Yet the special thing about Pokémon is this phenomenon which isn't exclusive to those of us in Canada or born around 1990. Up until this year's Pokémon Legends: Arceus, every mainline Pokémon game is a classic for another generation of kids the world over. Somehow, Pokémon developer Game Freak continues to capture cultural touchstone after cultural touchstone as if it were as easy as catching a Caterpie.

Review: Biomotor Unitron - SNK's Mech-Builder Is Heavy With Arms And Retro Charms

Posted: 04 Jun 2022 06:00 AM PDT

Cool robots and nostalgia can only do so much, though.

Biomotor Unitron has a wicked name. We'd forgive you for assuming it refers to an obscure power metal band or maybe the title of a 1990s mech-based anime. In reality, Biomotor Unitron is a mech-building role-playing game originally released for the Neo Geo Pocket Color way back in 1999 – which is also pretty cool. But does this retro title, now available on Nintendo Switch eShop, live up to the evocative image its name invokes?

In Biomotor Unitron, you assume the role of a Unitron Master. In other words, a pilot of a meteor-powered mech suit called a Unitron. Unitron Masters the world over gather in the city of Rhafiace to compete in arena battles in order to eventually earn the rank of Master of Masters (yes, you read that right). A handful of characters add a little colour to the adventure and there's a Big Bad to defeat, but by no means is this narrative one to remember.

Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (June 4th)

Posted: 04 Jun 2022 02:00 AM PDT

What're ya playin'!?

It's June, and this month is PACKED with new game releases and lots of summer gaming events! No, not-E3, although that's what we're calling it — "not-E3". This week, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet got a November release date! And it will officially be the first open-world mainline game. We also got a look at Sonic Frontiers' own open world and some combat. And footage of a cancelled Kirby GameCube game was discovered earlier in the week.

In other news, Card Shark's "witty writing" and "tense gameplay" surprised us. Yours truly asked a big question this week — why isn't Nintendo doing more with its music? And Kate wrote about the saddest games you can play on Switch, for when you need a good cry.
