Preview: Monster Hunter Rise Feels Like A Glorious Homecoming For The Series, Not A Side-Story Posted: 07 Jan 2021 03:00 PM PST Our impressions of the new demo. Monster Hunter has gone mainstream. With 2018's Monster Hunter: World, Capcom finally managed to get the storied franchise to break through to become a smash-hit internationally, selling over 21 million cumulative sales (including Iceborne) as of the time of writing. But, the series has traditionally been positioned as a handheld title – and after spending some time with Monster Hunter Rise's incredibly impressive demo – we feel that this new entry is something of a homecoming for the series. Unlike Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, which was released on Switch in the autumn of 2018, Monster Hunter Rise is built from the ground up with the Switch in mind. This doesn't mean you're getting a watered-down experience; the lessons the team learned from Monster Hunter: World still shine through in this demo, with more than a few new tricks of its own, to boot. Multiplayer Survival Game Project Winter Coming Soon To Switch Posted: 07 Jan 2021 01:00 PM PST Time to betray everyone. Again. Project Winter, a brutal eight-person survival/betrayal game set in the unforgiving snowy wilderness, has been confirmed as a Switch release "coming soon". Other Ocean Interactive, also responsible for the 3DS Minecraft and the Wii U port of Costume Quest 2, released the game on PC in February of 2019, and have also just announced that the game will be coming to Xbox Game Pass at the end of January. Like any survival game, Project Winter offers a lot of horrendous ways to die: mauled to death by a bear, crushed to death by an angry moose, poisoned by berries, eaten by wolves, and being killed by a fellow teammate... who was a saboteur the whole time. With proximity-based voice chat, you want to make sure you don't wander off alone, because your friends won't be able to hear you scream for help if the traitors find you. Random: Pokémon In Unreal Engine Looks Like Skyrim Posted: 07 Jan 2021 12:30 PM PST Meowth has wares, if you have coin. Every now and again, a fan takes it upon themselves to rebuild a game in Unreal Engine. We've seen Mario and Peach's Castle, a very fancy Temple of Time, and the original starter Pokémon from Pokémon Red and Blue looking unnervingly realistic, too. "Made in Unreal" is almost synonymous with "super-HD and kinda uncomfortably detailed" now, and this latest remake is no exception - although at least there are no human characters this time. Reddit user papabeard88 made the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl areas of Twinleaf Town and Route 201, the place where the player-character is born and raised, and begins their journey. Although it's not the most visually exciting town in Sinnoh, it exudes an air of peace and calm: a perfect place for any Pokémon trainer to start out. Read the full article on nintendolife.com |
Random: Artist Draws Smash Bros. Characters In The Style Of Cuphead Posted: 07 Jan 2021 12:00 PM PST We're calling it "Smash Cups". No, Cuphead still isn't in Smash Bros. - he's only a Mii costume for now - but artist Daniel Cortes has imagined a world where Smash Bros. is in Cuphead instead. As part of a daily challenge to himself, Cortes is drawing every single Smash Bros. character in the signature art style of Cuphead, based on 1930s "rubberhose" cartoons. He's only on day 18 so far, which means he's covered some of the big hitters - Mario, Luigi, Peach and friends - and he's now making his way through some of the weirder Smash Bros. inclusions, like Simon Belmont from Castlevania and Ridley from Metroid. Random: Lovers Who Met Through Animal Crossing Get Engaged In Real Life Posted: 07 Jan 2021 11:30 AM PST I can hear the Bells. It started the same as any romance: inside a magical fantasy world constructed by a villainous Tanooki landlord. But it ended with two people crossing borders and travelling thousands of miles to be with each other. Steven Brown had a unique problem: he had too many Bells in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and wanted to get rid of a few. He found Shayla Johnson on an Animal Crossing Facebook group, and she was happy to take the extra dosh off his hands. They initially planned to meet up just the once, according to Fox 13 News, but the quick interaction turned into an island tour, which turned into a friendship, which turned into love. Aww! Looks Like Nintendo Accidentally Used A Fan-Made Mario Render On Its Website Posted: 07 Jan 2021 11:00 AM PST It's-not-quite-a-me, Mario! According to Twitter user ujiidow, Nintendo did a big goof: seems like they accidentally used uJiidow's unofficial render of Mario instead of a real one on the Super Nintendo World website that went live yesterday. What is this, Among Us? Here are the two images, for reference, with the unofficial one on the left, and the real one on the right: Read the full article on nintendolife.com |
Nintendo Switch Sold More Than Every Other Console Combined Last Year In The UK Posted: 07 Jan 2021 10:30 AM PST We really WERE all playing Animal Crossing. Perhaps it's not a huge surprise, given that apparently Switch owners are the most likely to own another console, but in 2020, the Nintendo Switch outsold Xbox and PlayStation in the UK by a lot. Like... a lot a lot. It's tempting to see this as a huge success for Nintendo, and it is, but it's also a huge success for us - the people who play games. More than ever, consoles are moving away from the idea of "rival" consoles, and away from the idea that video games are for children and nerds, with accessible family games, fitness games, and even games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons that apparently drove some people to buy extra household Switches. Of course, a lot of Nintendo games are Switch-exclusive, and although Xbox and Sony have their fair share of exclusives, it pales in comparison to Nintendo's first-party, Switch-only offerings, which is probably why many people seem to own a Switch as well as another console. Feature: Ten Arcade Games We'd Love To See On Switch Posted: 07 Jan 2021 10:00 AM PST Potentially portable ports. As we mentioned in our recent feature, the Switch's extensive and ever-growing list of retro arcade re-releases has given fans of this cozy niche plenty to celebrate — but there's always room for improvement, and there are plenty more arcade classics that haven't yet arrived on Switch (or any console, for that matter). So we've made a list of ten arcade classics we'd love to see come home, and to keep it interesting we've given ourselves one golden rule to stick to: Our picks must have a realistic chance of actually appearing on the Switch. Well... if not realistic then at least not obviously completely impossible from the start. So however much fun Namco's fantasy exercise-'em-up Prop Cycle and Sega's Top Skater were in arcades, the massive novelty controllers integral to those experiences (an exercise bike and a skateboard-ish platform, respectively) make it clear those games just can't come home. Nintendo Dominates Amazon's Best-Selling Games List For 2020 Posted: 07 Jan 2021 08:00 AM PST And you can probably guess which game is top. Retail giant Amazon has shared a list of its best-selling products from the video game world throughout 2020, and it sure looks like Nintendo had one heck of a year. When removing accessories and top-up cards from the full rankings in order to focus on just the games themselves, seven of the top ten titles were exclusive to Nintendo Switch. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is on top, which is perhaps no surprise, but even games like the almost four-year-old Zelda: Breath of the Wild are still selling very strongly indeed. Japanese Charts: Nintendo Switch Ends 2020 In Spectacular Fashion Posted: 07 Jan 2021 06:45 AM PST Switch smashes the software and hardware tables. Famitsu's Japanese chart figures are now in for the two weeks spanning 21st December 2020 to 3rd January 2021, revealing that Nintendo managed to round out the year in style. The entire top ten software chart was made up of Switch titles over the course of the two weeks, with Momotaro Dentetsu continuing to shine brightest at the top. Brian Cooper Of Respected Website Japanese Nintendo Has Passed Away Posted: 07 Jan 2021 03:00 AM PST The community pays tribute. It's fair to say that we're not the only Nintendo website out there, and over the years we've been in close contact with the webmasters of what many people would deem to be 'rival' sites (that's not really the case and we like to think we've always maintained a positive relationship with other Nintendo sites). One such site was Japanese Nintendo, which provided translations and up-to-date news on events in the Far East and was often used as a source for news stories here on Nintendo Life. Sadly, we have to report that the site's owner, Brian Cooper, has passed away. Read the full article on nintendolife.com |
