Monster Hunter Rise: Last Chance To Play The Free Switch Demo

Posted: 25 Jan 2021 09:20 AM PST

Capcom's free Monster Hunter Rise demo is being delisted from the Nintendo Switch eShop very soon. The demo will only be available to download and play until 1 AM PT / 3 AM ET on February 1, giving you only a few more days to try it out if you haven't yet.

The demo encompasses four quests: two training missions that explain the game's controls and mechanics, and two proper hunts. The "beginner" hunt asks you to slay the Great Izuchi, one of the new monsters debuting in Rise, while the "intermediate" hunt sends you off to slay the returning Mizutsune. The demo also lets you sample the Wirebug and the Palamute, which we thought were game-changing additions to the series.

The demo supports both local and online play with up to three other players. To take advantage of the latter feature, you'll need to have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. If you don't have one of those, however, Nintendo is currently offering a free seven-day trial to the service for a limited time.

Major GTA Online Cheats Site Shut Down After Pressure From Take-Two

Posted: 25 Jan 2021 09:08 AM PST

A well-known site that specialized in selling cheats for the popular online game GTA Online has shut down following "discussions" from publisher Take-Two. As reported by Eurogamer, LunaCheats now contains a single text message, saying that the site will "immediately cease all maintenance, development, and distribution of our cheat menu services." The message goes on to say that the site will donate all proceeds of its hacks to a charity designated by Take-Two.

Despite being released almost a decade ago, GTA Online continues to maintain its position as one of the most popular games in the world. GTA Online will get a standalone release for PS5 and Xbox Series X sometime in the second half of 2021, with special content exclusive to those versions of the game.

Popular online games like GTA Online have always had their cheaters, but big-name video game companies have been mounting legal campaigns against major cheating sites over the past few months, with Call of Duty cheaters being a particular focus. Activision shut down the notable cheats site GatorCheats with a series of cease-and-desist letters, but that didn't stop a team from getting removed from a $250,000 Call of Duty tournament after being caught cheating. Recently, both Riot and Bungie sued cheat-peddlers for Destiny 2 and Valorant.

Live-Action Harry Potter TV Show Could Happen At HBO Max, But It's Early Days

Posted: 25 Jan 2021 08:34 AM PST

Warner Bros. is in the planning stages for a live-action Harry Potter TV show. This is according to The Hollywood Reporter, which says the program is in "early development" for the streaming service HBO Max.

A Harry Potter TV show had been rumored for years, but this is the first time we're learning about some of the specifics. THR says executives from Warner Bros. have taken meetings with potential writers who are pitching "various ideas" for the show.

Don't get too excited yet, however, as it sounds like it's still very early days. "Sources say broad ideas have been discussed as part of the early-stage exploratory meetings," the report said.

Konami Announces Corporate Restructure, Effect On Gaming Unclear

Posted: 25 Jan 2021 08:25 AM PST

Konami has announced a corporate restructure that will consolidate many of the company's internal departments on February 1st. According to an official translation of the announcement, this means that the company's three "production divisions" will be dissolved, though its "production departments" remain unchanged.

According to financial professionals, this is a move that will have an unclear impact on the company's gaming operations. Analyst Daniel Ahmad suggests that this restructure is similar to the one that Konami undertook in 2015, and that the company is not "shutting down" their gaming operations, as fans have often accused it of doing in recent years. Others noted that companies like Sega and Square Enix have gone through similar restructures in the past.

While it's true that Konami doesn't release that many games these days, it still owns some of the most beloved gaming franchises in the world, including Metal Gear and Castlevania. For context, the last major Castlevania game was Lords of Shadow 2, which came out in 2014. Metal Gear has fared a bit better, with 2018's Metal Gear Survive releasing without longtime director Hideo Kojima at the helm. Kojima left the company years ago due to a dispute over the production of Metal Gear Solid V.

Dragon Age 4 Setting Confirmed To Be Tevinter

Posted: 25 Jan 2021 08:00 AM PST

The next Dragon Age game will take place in Tevinter, according to an official BioWare game development book. For fans of the series, the new setting suggests a lot about the story and conflicts that will be front-and-center in the anticipated sequel.

Eurogamer reports that the setting was confirmed in the book BioWare: Stories and Secrets from 24 Years of Game Development. This follows a hint that came at the end of Dragon Age Inquisition's Trespasser expansion, and will finally make good on a setting we've previously only heard about secondhand.

The Tevinter Imperium is a human nation ruled by a council of mages. The council of magisters is led by the Imperial Archon. Tevinter has also been described as a rich, decadent nation that kept a tight rule on its people, including by use of blood magic. Given that plenty of Dragon Age stories have revolved around tensions between magic-users and non-magic folk, it's sure to be a rich vein for intrigue.

Hitman 3 Speedrunners Are Finishing The First Level In Less Than 10 Seconds

Posted: 25 Jan 2021 07:33 AM PST

Hitman 3 speedrunners are currently posting record completion times of IO Interactive's latest assassination sandbox, with some players now able to complete the opening Dubai level in under ten seconds. The first level of Hitman 3 tasks players with eliminating two targets inside of a heavily-fortified skyscraper, with one of the potential victims routinely wandering around the upper floors and constantly flanked by security.

According to Speedrun.com, a website that tracks how quickly players can complete games, user Goron currently holds first place with a world record of eight seconds, followed closely by four other players who share second place with a nine-second run. The strategy for completing the mission 'On Top Of The World' is simple but requires pinpoint accuracy to pull off.

In the video provided in the link above, Goron attracts the attention of Marcus Stuyvesant on one of the upper floors with a well-placed shot from Agent 47's silenced pistol, instantly executes him with a headshot, and quickly eliminates his second target, Carl Ingram, within less than a second. With the starting point of the Dubai level also being a convenient exit point, Goron was able to pull off the impressive feat with time to spare.

Super Bowl 55 Won't Have Budweiser, Coke, Or Pepsi Ads

In its own statement, Anheuser-Busch said, "After a year that looked like no other, Budweiser has decided to do things differently."

For the first time since 1983, Anheuser-Busch will not buy an ad for its famous Budweiser brand during the Super Bowl. Instead, the company is donating the money it would have used on an ad to COVID-19 relief and vaccination awareness campaigns.

Id Software Appears To Be Making a VR Game

Posted: 25 Jan 2021 06:32 AM PST

A rating on an Australian classifications board suggests id Software may be at work on a new VR Game. And based on the rating, at least, this VR game will be a pretty grisly one.

The rating for "Project 2021A" was filed on January 22, 2021, with Bethesda Softworks, ZeniMax, and id Software listed by name. The name doesn't give any clues as to the content, but the ratings for specific types of objectionable material may shed more light. According to the board, it has a very high impact under the Violence category, strong Themes, and some mild language.

All that sounds like it would be right at home in one of id's existing franchises, like the recently revitalized Doom series. Id Software has already dabbled in VR with Doom VFR in 2017, but the listing suggests this is a new project altogether.

Posted: 25 Jan 2021 06:04 AM PST

Netflix's Witcher series is the streaming company's most popular original TV show ever, so it was no surprise when a spin-off prequel series was announced. This show is still some time off, but we've now learned about another actor who may join the cast for Blood Origin.

Deadline reports that Jodie Turner-Smith (The Last Ship, Queen & Slim) is in talks to join Blood Origin, though a deal hasn't been made yet, it seems.

The site reported that Turner-Smith is signing on to play Eile, who is described as an "elite warrior blessed with the voice of a goddess, who has left her clan and position as Queen's guardian to follow her heart as a nomadic musician."
