The Suicide Squad Gets Teaser Featuring New Footage

Posted: 29 Mar 2021 09:45 AM PDT

A new TV spot for The Suicide Squad has been released. This latest promo includes some footage not featured in the full trailer for the upcoming DC movie.

The teaser is short but there are a few new things to look out for. The main one--as pointed out by director James Gunn in a tweet--is that we see the Thinker speak. Played by Peter Capaldi, he tells Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), "that's suicide." Elsewhere, there's new footage of Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) running across a building as it collapses, Peacemaker (John Cena) stating, "there's nothing like a bloodbath to start the day," and Savant (Michael Rooker) letting out a really big scream. Check it out below:

The Suicide Squad also stars Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Sylvester Stallone as King Shark, Alice Braga as Sol Soria, and Pete Davidson as Blackguard.

SpongeBob SquarePants "Mid-Life Crustacean" Episode Removed From Paramount+

Posted: 29 Mar 2021 09:37 AM PDT

The SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Mid-Life Crustacean" has been taken "out of rotation" by Nickelodeon, and is currently unavailable on Amazon Prime or the recently launched Paramount+, according to IGN. A representative from Nickelodeon told IGN that the episode, which features Mr. Krabs enduring a mid-life crisis and going on a "panty raid," that the episode has actually already been out of broadcast circulation for a few years.

"'Mid-Life Crustacean' has been out of rotation since 2018, following a standards review in which we determined some story elements were not kid-appropriate," an unnamed representative said, only adding there was "no comment" on whether Nickelodeon may consider employing a content warning and reinstating the episode. Slate had contacted representatives from Paramount+, but did not receive a response by publication time.

This episode being pulled is part of a larger, ongoing trend where shows routinely re-assess their content. Last year, Adult Swim opted to quietly retire several episodes from several series when bringing its content to HBO Max. When episodes of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, The Boondocks, and The Shivering Truth were noticeably absent from the service, a representative said these episodes were "permanently retired due to cultural insensitivities" and "When Adult Swim transitions to a new platform, we determine what episodes are selected through creative and cultural filters and our standards and practices policies. Oftentimes these decisions are made in collaboration with the show's creators."

Some Guy Made A Suez Canal Game, And It's Just As Futile As The Real Thing

Posted: 29 Mar 2021 09:09 AM PDT

The Suez Canal was blocked for nearly a week by the freight liner Ever Given, and we finally have a game to commemorate the memetic event. Designer Eric Wilder released the short-form game Suez Canal Bulldozer onto itch.io recently, and it puts you behind the wheel of a lone bulldozer as you try to unwedge the 1,300-foot boat in order to save global commerce.

Sadly, just like in real life, you are unable to save the day here. No matter what you do, a message pops up that says, "It's super stuck." The game's aesthetics and sound are purposefully similar to the early Pokemon games like Red and Blue. Wilder told Kotaku that the omnipresent memes about the global event inspired him to put the game together. Said memes compare the struggles of living in our current pandemic conditions with the ineffective solutions that we try to use to solve these problems. "I just thought the futility of the meme was hilarious," Wilder said. "Had to spin that into a game."

The mammoth Ever Given was finally unwedged from the muck on Monday, capping off a whirlwind week for boat and meme enthusiasts. Wilder's game isn't the only digital representation of the stuck boat--a recent Microsoft Flight Simulator mod added it to the landscape. Jokes aside, the global impact of the blocked canal was quite significant. CNBC suggested that the blockage was costing billions of dollars per day, and exacerbating existing shortages that have affected consumer goods like cars, phones, and that PS5 you still can't find. The crisis might be over, but at least we'll still have our meme-ories.

Fortnite's Dinosaur Eggs Seem Ready To Hatch

Posted: 29 Mar 2021 09:07 AM PDT

Fortnite Season 6 has already introduced various wildlife to the island, such as frogs, chickens, boar, and wolves. Now it looks like the next species is nearly ready to make its debut. Yes, dinosaurs seem primed to come to Fortnite, possibly as early as this week.

Since Fortnite Season 6 debuted in mid-March, players have noticed large blue-spotted eggs around the map. Consistently over the past two weeks since the update, the eggs seemed to be slowly hatching, and with an update just around the corner, it seems these eggs are ready to burst.

The introduction of raptors has been Epic's worst-kept secret with the Primal season, as dataminers almost immediately located files related to the dinosaurs being present on the island sometime this season. In fact, these eggs have never officially been declared "dinosaur" eggs, but it's a foregone conclusion that it's precisely those raptors that will soon sprout from the not-so-mysterious eggs.

Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver Removed From Steam, Modder Says License Issues To Blame

Posted: 29 Mar 2021 08:25 AM PDT

Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver was temporarily scrubbed from Steam a few days ago, raising eyebrows across the Web. Some hopeful fans speculated on social media that the cult classic was removed from the store as part of a lead-up to a remake or remaster announcement. However, several threads in the game's Steam forum by a notable fan developer suggest that Soul Reaver was removed from sale due to license issues with the legacy Bink video format, as well as other issues with running the game on modern operating systems.

As of this writing, the game's store page has a notice that reads: "Square Enix has temporarily removed this title from sale to work on some important updates. Please check back soon!" According to Legacy of Kain fan developer "wrace," the author of a popular fan-patch that fixes several critical issues with the Soul Reaver PC port, a team at online storefront GOG are currently working to release a version of the game that will include lower-quality versions of the game's cutscenes. This is apparently because the existing Steam version uses the proprietary Bink video format without a license. It will also supposedly include a wrapper to improve Windows 10 support.

Posted: 29 Mar 2021 08:16 AM PDT

Director Peter Berg has signed a deal with Netflix for new live-action movies and TV shows. This is a "first-look" deal, which means Netflix gets first right of refusal for new projects.

As part of the deal, Berg will direct and produce these new projects, whatever they turn out to be, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

It's no surprise that Netflix made a deal with Berg, as his Netflix movie Spenser Confidential starring Mark Wahlberg was among the most successful original movies for Netflix in history, with 85 million views over its first four weeks, according to Netflix's accounting. Berg's production company Film 44 is included with the new Netflix deal.

Japanese Magazine Famitsu Editor Arrested For Alleged Fraud

Posted: 29 Mar 2021 08:05 AM PDT

An editor at Japan's biggest video game publication, Famitsu, has been arrested for alleged fraud. Eiichi Sato is accused of collecting freelance fees for articles written under a false name.

Kotaku reports that Sato's work for Famitsu included editing freelance articles. But he also allegedly filed three articles that he wrote himself between March and June of 2020, and subsequently collected the freelance fees for them. He's said to have purchased a bank ATM card from a man he met online in order to collect the fees, resulting in extra payments of approximately 400,000 yen ($3,650).

Sato has reportedly confessed to the charges, saying he was driven by concern about money. "I didn't have any savings," he said, "and I was worried about the future."

Evil Genius 2: World Domination Review

Posted: 29 Mar 2021 08:00 AM PDT

Building a criminal empire isn't all fun and games, you know. In Evil Genius 2, the sequel/reboot of the 2004 cult classic strategy game, running a casino and super-secret volcano lair with a doomsday device takes vision… and the ability to manage an army of minions. It's a management sim that requires careful planning and timing; you need to build a base that runs like a well-oiled machine that can mint the resources you'll need to conquer the globe. To succeed where every Bond villain has failed, the base needs to double as a labyrinth of wild traps like shark pits and laser walls that can keep nosy secret agents from bringing too much heat down on you. Though aspects of the game can feel like they're at cross-purposes from time to time, Evil Genius 2's goofy, lighthearted vision perfectly captures a cartoony retro spy vibe that lets you revel in pretending you're the ultimate evil boss.

Taking advantage of nearly 20 years of technological advances since the original, Evil Genius 2 makes good on the promise of making a Bond Villain simulator. The art, music, and style channel the cartoon camp of '60s and '70s spy movies and TV. In cutscenes, the Genius banters with rival villains and super spies or berates his minions, who maintain a sheepish, aww-shucks attitude. All of this paints the Genius' rise to power as a fun, free-wheeling romp. The swanky lounge soundtrack, punctuated by dramatic musical cues likewise feels like it's pulled out of the early-era Bond that permeates every pore of the game.

The '60s and '70s spy-movie vibe permeates every aspect of Evil Genius 2 to great effect.
The '60s and '70s spy-movie vibe permeates every aspect of Evil Genius 2 to great effect.

You can feel it most acutely in the characters. Though you are the mastermind, there are actually many Evil Geniuses. At the start of the game you can choose one of four to be your avatar. From the gold-obsessed Maximilian to the metal-armed Russian General Red Ivan, the geniuses all have the larger-than-life international crime syndicate boss look and feel. You can also recruit "henchmen," unique lieutenants with similar powers and Bond villain personas. Lastly, each region of the world has a singular Super Agent who can disrupt your base pretty handily and deliver some of that crucial hero-villain banter.

It Takes Two Has A Great "F**k The Oscars" Easter Egg

Posted: 29 Mar 2021 07:50 AM PDT

Game developer and filmmaker Josef Fares is known for being outspoken, and now one of his most memorable outbursts has been immortalized in his latest game, It Takes Two. It has been discovered that Fares' memorable "f**k the Oscars" comment from The Game Awards back in 2017 is featured in the game as an Easter egg.

Games media veteran Geoff Keighley, the host of The Game Awards and the person standing next to Fares as he said the line during the show, shared a clip of the Easter egg on Twitter. It simply plays what sounds like the direct audio from Fares' speech at The Game Awards, which is pretty great. Have a listen for yourself:

Fares replied to Keighley to say he's surprised that people found the Easter egg so quickly.
