Halo Co-Creator's New Studio V1 Interactive Is Closing

Posted: 08 Mar 2021 10:12 AM PST

The game studio founded by Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto, V1 Interactive, is closing up less than a year after releasing its debut title, Disintegration. The studio made the announcement on Twitter, saying, "We are sad to inform you that V1 Interactive is officially closing."

The statement continued, "We want to thank all the talented people at V1, both past and present, who helped make the last 5 years wonderful. And a heartfelt thanks to the amazing community that supported us."

V1's first and only game was the sci-fi shooter Disintegration, which launched in 2020 for console and PC. There were signs of trouble right away for the game, as V1 announced that Disintegration failed to find a big enough audience, prompting the studio to shut down its servers.

Windows 10 Update May Have Broken Backups For Some Users

Posted: 08 Mar 2021 09:52 AM PST

Installing those pesky Windows 10 updates usually helps your computer run better, but some users are reporting major issues with the operating system's February update. According to several sources like Windows Latest, the update apparently breaks Windows 10's File History feature, which is the system's default backup solution, allowing users to store files on other drives.

Complaints have appeared on Microsoft's community forum as well as Reddit, with one Windows Latest commenter saying that the update caused their backups to mysteriously fail. Upon uninstalling the update, File History began to work again. Users have reported that the File History menu behaves sluggishly and fails to respond, and when they finally click the button to activate the backup, an error message appears. If you're experiencing the issue, it appears that rolling back the update is your best option.

Other users have reported additional issues with the February update, particularly around webcam functionality. While Microsoft says that it's working on that issue, it appears that the company hasn't yet acknowledged the File History bug yet, so let's hope that it starts working on it soon.

Bungie Says Go Have Fun With Destiny 2's 12-Person Raid Glitch

Posted: 08 Mar 2021 09:40 AM PST

Bungie knows that Destiny 2 players are glitching their way into sprawling 12-person raids, and it is surprisingly pretty much okay with it. The studio says that a fix is incoming, but until then you Guardians can have fun bending the rules a little.

In the weekly Bungie update, the studio says it's glad players are enjoying themselves and it's fine to try it out. But at the same time, it warns that you could run into bugs since the raids weren't designed for "a clown car of Guardians."

"The big buzz around the community this week has been players finding out a way to cram four fireteams in activities meant for one," the studio stated. "We've been watching the 12-player raid hype and are glad you're enjoying yourselves. We aren't rushing out a fix for this and it's totally fine if you want to try it out and have some fun. Just keep in mind that we didn't create these activities expecting a clown car of Guardians to roll up, so you may experience some weirdness."

Escaped Fugitive Arrested Trying To Purchase Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

Posted: 08 Mar 2021 09:18 AM PST

A UK fugitive was arrested after he emerged from hiding to buy Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Clint Butler, a 36-year-old who had escaped from HMP Spring Hill open prison, went to town to buy the game and ran into police.

Eurogamer reports that Butler broke lockdown rules in the process of entering a city center to buy the game. Officers spotted him and a friend change direction upon seeing police, and asked to check his identification. He proceeded to kick one officer and try to run. He was restrained and admitted he'd given them a false name.

Butler had been serving a 17-year sentence for robbery and firearms, which was set to end in 2024. But he escaped prison in November 2020, and the Thames Valley Police issued a warrant and told the public not to approach. He was re-apprehended on January 13, and the West Midlands Police recently published a video of the incident.

Prominent Streamer Calls For Halo Infinite Battle Royale In Viral Tweet

Posted: 08 Mar 2021 09:02 AM PST

The prominent streamer and content creator Jack "CouRage" Dunlop tweeted that the much-delayed Halo Infinite should have a battle royale mode recently, and it's led to a lot of discussion on social media. In the tweet, Dunlop said that while Halo is his "favorite game series of all time," he feels that if Halo Infinite doesn't include a "robust and well-made" battle royale mode, it would be one of "the greatest gaming failures in history."

Though his claim seems to be intentionally hyperbolic, it inspired passionate reactions from Halo fans and industry figures alike. Many replies agreed with Dunlop's tweet, but some accused Dunlop of asking Halo developer 343 Industries to prioritize a hypothetical battle royale mode over the game's traditional multiplayer, which they view as the core of the Halo experience. Esports videographer Davis "Hitch" Edwards replied to the tweet, saying the following: "[Battle royales] are necessary for shooter games to blow up. Just how it is."

Dunlop defended himself against such retorts, saying that since Halo Infinite has been in development for "six years," fans should be able to expect both traditional multiplayer and a battle royale mode. However, though it's been six years since the release of Halo 5, it's worth noting we don't actually know how long Halo Infinite has been in development.

For those just catching up, It Takes Two tells the story of a human couple going through a divorce. Their daughter becomes upset about this and creates two dolls modeled after her parents. She cries on them and they come alive before getting thrust into a fantastical world where they must work together to escape, and rekindle their love in the process.

WandaVision Showrunner Says There Was "No Plan B" For Pietro Casting

Posted: 08 Mar 2021 08:23 AM PST

One of the biggest surprises in the Disney+ Marvel show WandaVision was the appearance of Evan Peters as Wanda's brother Pietro. Showrunner Jac Schaeffer has spoken more about this, and revealed there was no back-up plan if Peters couldn't do it.

Peters played Pietro--aka Quicksilver--in the X-Men films, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson appearing as Pietro in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the movie rights to the X-Men are now owned by Disney, the two superhero universes are yet to cross. The final episode of WandaVision reveals that it's not Pietro at all, but an ordinary man named Ralph Bohner that Wanda has "recast" as her dead brother, making Peters' appearance little more than an in-joke. Nevertheless, Schaeffer states that she was only given permission to use Peters at the last minute.

"[Using Peters] was an enormous question mark for a very long time," she told the New York Times. "And it took a while to figure out if it would be possible. It was late that it was finally confirmed that we could do it. But we were writing for it. Evan is such a chameleon in that way, that could play an amalgamation of [Full House']s Uncle Jesse, [Family Ties'] Nick, and Joey from Friends. He could play those layers."

Marvel's Avengers Dev Explains The New XP Grind Changes

Posted: 08 Mar 2021 08:21 AM PST

Crystal Dynamics has responded to the feedback surrounding the changes coming to Marvel's Avengers involving the XP grind. The March 18 next-gen update for the game makes a big change that means after level 25, the amount of XP needed to level up will increase the closer you get to level 50. Many players responded negatively to the news, prompting a further explanation for the change.

Posting on Reddit, Crystal Dynamics said its initial announcement "was not comprehensive enough," and this prompted confusion among fans.

To explain what's changing and why, Crystal Dynamics said the XP required between levels "didn't scale well." The studio said it's not uncommon for players to "ding" two or three times in a single mission, which might seem good, but according to the developer, it's not.

Monster Hunter Rise Second Demo Coming March 11, Free Post-Launch Updates To Follow

Posted: 08 Mar 2021 08:10 AM PST

Monster Hunter Rise launches on Switch on March 26, but players will have another chance to sample the game ahead of then. During its Monster Hunter Digital Event, Capcom announced it is releasing a second free Monster Hunter Rise demo on March 11. On top of that, the publisher gave viewers a brief glimpse at the title's first free post-launch update.

The second demo will feature the two training missions and two hunts from the previous demo, as well as a new "advanced" quest to hunt the game's flagship monster, the Magnamalo. As before, the demo will have a play-count limit; you'll only be able to collectively play the three hunts 30 times. The demo will also once again support online play, giving you the option to group up with other players online and try the hunts cooperatively. However, you'll need to have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to take advantage of online play.

Capcom also released a new trailer for Monster Hunter Rise during the Digital Event. The video recapped the game's story and many of the monsters you'll encounter as you work to uncover the mystery behind the Rampage and save Kamura Village from destruction. It also confirmed two more returning monsters you'll face in Rise: the Nargacuga and the Zinogre.

AMD Could Be Preparing Its Own Mining-Focused GPUs Too

Posted: 08 Mar 2021 08:08 AM PST

AMD could be following in Nvidia's footsteps with the launch of its own cryptocurrency mining GPUs, according to patch notes for a Linux kernel drive.

The patch notes (via PCGamesN) mention a new GPU without any video outputs, a telling sign of hardware that is designed for large crypto mining farms. Curiously, the notes point towards an older RDNA 1, Navi 12 GPU, which indicates that AMD might be repurposing old hardware instead of using existing RDNA 2 resources for the new product line.

This would be different to Nvidia's approach, with the company recently revealing its CMP GPU range. These cards are purpose-built for mining, with no video outputs and more efficient power delivery and cooling without all the gaming bits that go to waste with a GeForce card. Of course, this means that Nvidia is stretching the already thin supply of silicon it has for three new products, meaning new gaming GPU releases will likely still be big targets for miners.

Lovecraft Country Extra Claims Skin Was Darkened For Show

Posted: 08 Mar 2021 08:07 AM PST

In a recent video shared on TikTok, actor Kelli Amirah describes her experiences of allegedly having her skin unexpectedly darkened as an extra for Lovecraft Country. HBO has, in a release (via The Hollywood Reporter), said it was "very disappointed" to learn of Amirah's experience and is also "taking steps to ensure this doesn't occur again in the future."

Amirah says she was hired, paid $100, and cast to play a younger version of a recurring character for a photograph that would briefly appear in an episode, and "had no idea they were going to do this to me beforehand." Adds Amirah in the video, "If I knew beforehand, I would not have accepted this job. Who thought this was a good idea?"

As Amirah explains, she was sitting in a trailer between two of Lovecraft Country's stars, mainly paying attention to her phone while she heard makeup artists observe that she looked "a little lighter" than the actress she was hired to portray a younger version of, and then "noticed my foundation is getting darker and darker… as soon as we wrapped I went right back to hair and makeup to ask for some makeup wipes because I refused to go out in the world like that."

Halo: Master Chief Collection Beta Testing Custom Game Browser; Edge Map Delayed

Posted: 08 Mar 2021 07:58 AM PST

The next beta update for Halo: The Master Chief Collection introduces the first iteration of a custom game browser and brings back a Halo 3 map, amid other enhancements and bug fixes. But the news isn't all rosy: another map has been delayed out of its planned Season 6 launch. According to 343, the update is expected to launch sometime this week, during which testers can put it through its paces.

The custom game browser will only be available within the Halo: Reach interface for now, though 343 plans to add it to more games in phases. The browser will let you create, browse, and report. Create lets you create a session that will run on a dedicated server, letting you toggle settings like the minimum player count, repeat game option, and map and mode selections. You'll also be able to create your own playlists to cycle through different maps and game types. For now 343 is asking for feedback on playlist creation. If you don't want to create your own, you can also browse custom sessions with search terms like name, game modes, maps, and player count. And you can report anyone you spot violating the code of conduct, up to five times per day. The update didn't give word on when this will roll out to the full game.

The update will also reintroduce the Waterfall map to Halo 3 with performance and bug fixes. It will be coming to the full game as part of the season 6 update. The Edge map, on the other hand, has been determined to need "quite a few fundamental improvements" before it goes live, so it won't be coming with Season 6 as planned.
