A Plague Tale: Innocence's Free PS5 Upgrade Will Support DualSense Features

Posted: 28 Jun 2021 11:17 AM PDT

A Plague Tale: Innocence is getting free Xbox Series X|S and PS5 enhancements on July 6. The trailer for the upgrade revealed that it will enhance the game's visuals, playing in 4K resolution at 60fps. According to publisher Focus Home Interactive, the upgrade goes beyond visual enhancements--it takes advantage of current gen tech, including the PS5's DualSense controller.

"We can say that [A Plague Tale: Innocence] will feature faster load times, audio enhancement, DualSense features (i.e. haptic rumble sync with 3D sound and adaptive triggers), and cross progression," Focus Home Interactive PR strategist Julie Carneiro told GameSpot via email.

Given that A Plague Tale: Innocence sees you fleeing from, skirting around, and confronting huge waves of rats, I'm most curious (and terrified) to experience how developer Asobo Studio has used the DualSense's haptic rumble and 3D sound.

Sea Of Thieves: A Pirate's Life Review - Dead Men Tell Five Tales, Actually

Posted: 28 Jun 2021 11:06 AM PDT

Sea of Thieves is often at its best when it devolves into chaos. After raiding a skeleton ship and loading up your brig with loot, suddenly, a player galleon appears from behind an island, turning its broadside cannons in your direction for a sneak attack. Returning fire, repairing your ship, and desperately turning your sails to make an escape--or firing a crewmate over to the enemy to lay waste to them and steal their stuff--are the moments that make Rare's pirate adventure live game so memorable.

But don't discount Rare's ability to make deep, brainy story content, either. Since its launch, Sea of Thieves has come to encompass Tall Tales, lengthy voyages centered on solving riddles and learning about non-player characters that make up the game's lore. It's in this more directed, narrative-driven realm that the game's latest expansion, A Pirate's Life, lies as well. Tying in with Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise, the expansion provides new stories to uncover that are both fairly delightful for fans of the films and the theme park attraction that spawned them, as well as big, involved new Sea of Thieves locations to explore.

A Pirate's Life adds a lot to Sea of Thieves, expanding on its sandbox with new enemies and a new weapon, while providing several hours of story content that's deep enough for experienced players to enjoy and approachable enough for newbies excited to sail the seas with Jack Sparrow. Though it's held back occasionally by bugs and relies on some of Sea of Thieves' weaker elements, like hitchy platforming, the expansion is a great excuse to man the helm of a pirate vessel.

John Lithgow Returns As Trinity Killer For Dexter Revival

Posted: 28 Jun 2021 10:31 AM PDT

Actor John Lithgow will be revisiting his role as the Trinity Killer in the upcoming Dexter revival season, according to Deadline. It's also being reported that Lithgow will "only film for about a day or so," which, if true, indicates the character's return will not command a sizable amount of screen time.

Even if that proves to be the case, regardless, it's safe to assume Trinity Killer's presence will be pretty impactful in the next batch of episodes. In the show's previous run, Lithgow's character loomed as a revered, feared, and twisted father figure for the titular character's serial killer trying to make peace with his demons. Deadline is also reporting Lithgow's filming will take place next week, which means it's reasonable for further details--including, for example, a longer shoot than initially reported--to come out after the fact.

Filming for the Dexter revival first got underway in Boston back in January. These upcoming 10 episodes, set in upstate New York, are intended to give a proper sendoff to the series. All that's known is that these episodes will not retcon everything that happened in the series' previous 2013 finale, which moved forward without showrunner Clyde Phillips' involvement. Phillips recently said he doesn't want fans to think of this as Dexter Season 9.

Nier Reincarnation Gets A Release Date In The West And Korea

Posted: 28 Jun 2021 10:30 AM PDT

Nier Reincarnation has been out in Japan for a while now, but we now know when the game will be playable in several other territories, including North America and Europe. The mobile game will be available for free on iOS and Android devices on July 28, and will offer in-app purchases.

Additionally, the number of pre-registrations that players notch before the game's release in July will have an impact on all players. The game has already received over 400,000 registrations, but if it reaches 600,000, all players will receive enough gems to complete several summons for free, as well as other valuable materials.

The press release announcing this date also notes that Nier Replicant, the "re-telling" of the original Nier, has sold and shipped more than one million copies combined. Nier Replicant is available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. In GameSpot's Nier Replicant review, critic Michael Higham praised the game's story as highly moving, though he noted that some aspects of the game seem dated today.

Sony Files PSX Trademark To Conduct Game Conferences And Exhibitions

Posted: 28 Jun 2021 10:09 AM PDT

In new documentation found on the US Patent and Trademark Office directory, Sony has filed a new trademark for something dubbed "PSX."

According to the documentation, the trademark is for "arranging, organizing, and conducting exhibitions and conferences in the fields of entertainment and video games" both online and offline, as well as providing entertainment and educational services including "video game playing and news [...] conferences, meeting, and networking events." The filing was submitted on June 11 and will be reviewed by an examiner in approximately three months.

"PSX" is the abbreviation Sony typically uses for its PlayStation Experience event, an annual conference the company has held since 2004 in Europe and 2014 in the US. 2017 was the last PSX event the company has put on as 2018's showcase was cancelled. Though Sony hasn't attended E3 since 2019, the company has hosted several livestreams under the State of Play moniker.

The Highly-Respected Emulator Developer Near Has Passed Away

Posted: 28 Jun 2021 09:11 AM PDT

Content warning: this article mentions suicide and self-harm.

The emulator developer Near--a highly-respected luminary in the fan emulation scene--has died, according to social media posts from a close friend. Several friends of the developer grew concerned when Near posted a photo of themselves along with several messages that seemed to suggest suicidal ideation.

Then, on June 27, notable hacker Hector Martin posted a Google document that he said was authored by a close friend of Near's, which contains explicit details of Near's death. Later, on June 28, Martin said that he spoke to the police department in charge of the investigation, who confirmed that Near died on June 27. The Google doc has been accepted by many as proof of Near's death, in part due to the hacker's intensely private nature.

Tarantino Says He Considered A Reservoir Dogs Remake As His Last Film

Posted: 28 Jun 2021 08:54 AM PDT

Writer-director Quentin Tarantino is making one more movie, and then he plans to retire. But what will the final film be? We still don't know for sure, but Tarantino recently told Bill Maher that he considered dipping back into his past for his final movie by remaking Reservoir Dogs.

"I considered a remake of Reservoir Dogs as my last movie," he revealed, before turning to the camera and gesturing to make it extra clear. "I won't do it, internet, alright, but I considered it."

Released in 1992, Reservoir Dogs was Tarantino's first big movie, so it would have been a very full circle type of moment for him to remake it as his last film.

Ron Perlman Will Voice Optimus Primal In Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts - Report

Posted: 28 Jun 2021 08:25 AM PDT

Hellboy himself, Ron Perlman, has reportedly been cast as the voice of Optimus Primal in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, according to Collider. Optimus Primal, the leader of the Maximals, was originally voiced by Perlman in the animated series Transformers: Power of the Primes.

Rise of the Beasts will introduce Transformers: Beast Wars lore into the live-action films for the first time--meaning there will be robots that transform into animals and vehicles. For those that don't closely follow the various animated incarnations of the property, that shouldn't seem like too much of a logical leap. After all, we've already seen Dinobots in the films.

As of this writing, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is slated for a June 24, 2022 release. In the meantime, you can read everything we know so far and get up to speed yourself. You can also read our related overview of all the robots we know, so far, will have a role in the movie.
