Posted: 14 Sep 2021 04:00 PM PDT

Tokyo Game Show remains one of the world's biggest celebrations of video games and culture, bringing together fans from around the world to enjoy the latest and greatest in gaming.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Asia's biggest gaming event, with the show again taking a virtual format. The 2021 theme of Tokyo Game Show aims to emphasise the power of gaming to close the distance between people and carries with it the inspiring event tagline of 'We'll always have games.'

Following a return to the Tokyo Game Show stage last year, we are pleased to confirm Xbox will be back with a virtual stream curated for players in Japan and across Asia on Thursday, September 30 at 6pm JST.

As games close the distance between people, we invite our players to celebrate the joy and community of gaming with us. Similar to last year, this will be a show curated for our players in Japan and across Asia.  Expect a celebration with our Asia community and locally relevant updates, though no new global debuts should be expected. Tune in to see the latest regionally relevant updates on previously announced games coming later this year.

Tune in at 6PM JST on Thursday, September 30 to catch all of the action.

Boulder Dash Deluxe Available Now

Posted: 14 Sep 2021 03:00 PM PDT

The year is 1984 and no one's heard of a pair of Italian plumbers who eat magic mushrooms and go down sewers pipes in an attempt to save a damsel in distress. People have, though, been playing a boulder-based 2D puzzle-maze game on their brand new Atari system with its impressive 8-bit graphics.

Created by two Canadian developers, Peter Liepa and Chris Gray, Boulder Dash took the world by storm surpassing the excitement and speed of its predecessor Dig Dug and dazzled with its colorful animations for the time.

Boulder Dash Deluxe

Fast forward nearly four decades, and Boulder Dash has become one of the longest running video game franchises with over 20 versions of the game, on over 20 different platforms, evolving over time to remain a fixture in the retro gaming space and in video game history.

Now, Boulder Dash Deluxe is available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows 10, giving players a chance to experience video game development evolution first hand, level by level. It's a time capsule that will take you back to an 8-bit world and snap you forward to present, allowing you to feel the limitations of gaming then to the vast expanses of development tools we have today to make these amazing products that can literally live on for decades.

Boulder Dash Deluxe

As a teenager who flew to Japan with barely enough money to come back, just to see the mecca of video games at the time, never did I think that I would be able to make video games as a career but also be a part of Peter Liepa's amazing creation and franchise that has lasted so long.

In this latest version, we invite players to explore the refreshed world of Boulder Dash with the game's influential protagonist, Rockford, and dive headfirst into myriad new and exciting challenges. Players will dig through spectacular caves with modernized 3D elements while avoiding the perils of falling boulders! There's no shortage of valuable gems to collect, and even more nefarious enemies to conquer along the way; discover treasure chests overflowing with rare collectibles and valuable power-ups as you plow your way through 180 new and challenging levels, 20 of them created by Peter Liepa itself.

It’s a slice of history, a maze of challenges and an absolute gem. We hope you check it out and keep the good times rolling with us for another decade!

Ashley Tisdale to Play Hard-Bitten CIA Officer Rachel King in The Dark Pictures: House of Ashes

Posted: 14 Sep 2021 11:00 AM PDT

House of Ashes is the latest entry in Supermassive Games' Dark Pictures Anthology. You may have already spotted Rachel King in our previous trailers. In this 15-minute playthrough, you’ll get to see more of her character and learn more about her relationships with the others.

That's why today, I want to talk about the star character of House of Ashes, Rachel King, who is played in the game by none other than the very talented Ashley Tisdale, “High School Musical” star, pop star, and actor! In House of Ashes, Rachel is a hard-bitten CIA Officer assigned to the search for weapons of mass destruction. In the darkness under the Zagros Mountains, she finds much more than she bargained for!

The Dark Pictures: House of Ashes

For those who don't know already, House of Ashes takes place near the end of the 2003 Iraq war. Coalition forces are scouring the country for evidence of weapons of mass destruction, which are widely believed to be buried underground in secret storage depots. In our story, the allies are aided by the Caelus program: a breakthrough satellite radar system that can penetrate the ground to sniff out underground structures. When Caelus detects a suspicious structure on the border with Iran, a Special Forces team led by Rachel King is dispatched to investigate. Unfortunately, Caelus has got it wrong—the structure they end up raiding turns out to be a 4,000-year-old Sumerian temple. A temple that is now home to a nest of horrifying creatures!

From the off, we designed Rachel as a tough character. She's in charge of an elite team operating in hostile territory, so she needs to be capable of making hard decisions under pressure. Interesting characters are always layered, so we asked ourselves what could pull such a person out of their comfort zone. The answer was clear: her own, personal relationships.

The Dark Pictures: House of Ashes

Rachel's tough, uncompromising demeanor surely couldn't persist in her own love life: she must have a softer side! With that in mind, we created her marriage to Eric, a genius scientist assigned to the US Air Force (and the brains behind the Caelus program). When our story begins, Eric and Rachel's marriage is on the rocks: following a split, they've both become absorbed by their work and haven't seen each other for a year. Rachel has moved on, beginning a new relationship with Nick, one of the marines on her team. When Eric unexpectedly arrives on base and takes over her command, all the troubles of this love triangle are forced into the open.

When casting Rachel, we needed somebody who could act tough, but also have a softer side ; Ashley Tisdale had all the qualities we were looking for. Aside from being a fantastic actor, she's got a sensitivity that grounded Rachel in her most vulnerable moments. Ashley also has great comic timing, so she really gave Rachel an edge when delivering a cutting put-down. Rachel's journey has some real twists and turns—some of which must remain a mystery for now—and like all Dark Pictures characters, she can perish in a variety of horrific ways. It was tremendous fun directing her through all this madness, and she approached it all with great humour and boundless tenacity.

In the video you can see Rachel and Eric come under fire from the Iraqi guard who have also been trapped underground in this ancient temple. At this point the threat from our monsters is not so apparent to them so they continue the fight and Rachel and Eric need to escape. Another brief tremor pitches Rachel over the side of a crevice and Eric desperately struggles to hold onto her whilst also trying to avoid being shot himself. This would be a difficult situation even if they were complete strangers but Rachel is Eric's wife and as a player you will be faced with some very tough choices here – cut the rope to save yourself, or hang on and save Rachel but risk being shot. This scenario can play out in a number of different ways depending on the choices you make not only at this point but your actions in previous scenes will also have consequences for this very pivotal scene!

We hope you enjoyed this brief excerpt into working with Ashley Tisdale – It was tremendous fun directing her through all this madness, and she approached it all with great humour and boundless tenacity. We can't wait for you to meet her character in the game.

Look for House of Ashes to launch for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S on October 22.

New Updates to Xbox App on Windows 10 PCs Let You Stream Console Games From the Cloud or Your Home Console

Posted: 14 Sep 2021 07:30 AM PDT

Console gamers know that for the most part gaming has been tied to one spot in the home – maybe in the living room on the TV, maybe a game room where you and your friends fire up your Xbox console. I know there are times when you can't play when you want to, like when someone else called dibs on the TV or you're traveling and didn't bring your console along. Or maybe you don't own an Xbox console at all but want to experience it with your friends on the device most convenient to you. So today, we're opening up new possibilities for you to remotely play console games on your Windows 10 PCs (or later) with updates to the Xbox app, including support for:

  • Playing Xbox Game Pass games from the cloud
  • Playing games directly from your console with Xbox remote play

With these new updates, you now can play some of your favorite console titles on a wide range of PCs, even those that don't have the specs required for certain PC titles. Streaming games through the Xbox app provides the quickest way to play without having to install games on your PC, giving you more time to dive right into Psychonauts 2, Hades, or whatever else you are playing.

Play Xbox Game Pass games from the cloud

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members in 22 countries can now play Game Pass games directly from the cloud in the Xbox app on Windows 10 PCs. Game Pass members have been enjoying Xbox Cloud Gaming (beta) via browser on their phones, tablets and PCs and now can enjoy all the benefits of gaming from the cloud directly from the Xbox app.

Cloud gaming is ideal for those who want to quickly jump into a Game Pass game, either to continue playing a campaign you've been working through when you have a few free minutes, or to try out something completely new before deciding if you want to download it to your console.

To access games from the cloud on your Windows 10 PC, all you need is an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership and a compatible controller. Open the Xbox App, click the "cloud gaming" button, and select from hundreds of games in your Game Pass library, including Sea of Thieves and Myst, to start playing right away.

We've also added new features to help you get started, including easy-to-access information on controller and network status, Game Bar integration, social features to stay connected with friends, and the ability to invite people – even those also playing on cloud – to join you in a game.

To learn more about cloud gaming, visit xbox.com/cloudgaming.

Play games from your home console

Xbox Remote Play lets you play games from your Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, or any generation of Xbox One on your Windows 10 PC over the internet – from your home network or away! It's essentially a way to mirror your console gaming experience on another screen: Browse and play your full gaming catalog, change Settings, interact with your friends – your games are all there. Starting today, you can access Xbox Remote Play feature within the Xbox App on Windows 10 PCs.

This marks the first time we've enabled Xbox Remote Play on PC for Xbox Series X|S owners. We've also made additional upgrades from previous iterations of Remote Play, such as general stability updates, allowing for games to stream at 1080p up to 60fps, and adding the ability to play select Xbox 360 and Xbox Original games, which has been one of the most highly-requested features.

Xbox Remote Play is available in all Xbox-supported countries and regions on Windows PC, Android phones and tablets, and iOS phones and tablets. To learn more about remote play, please visit xbox.com/remote-play.

If you want to start streaming games to your Windows 10 PC from the cloud or your console today, download the Xbox app from the Windows Store. In addition to streaming, the app lets you browse the full Xbox catalog, find your next favorite game, and see what your friends are playing and chat with them.
