Enter the Nerf Trials to Become a Nerf Legend Today on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S

Posted: 19 Nov 2021 10:00 AM PST

Summary

  • Learn all about the development of Nerf Legends, its story, and online multiplayer modes from developer Fun Labs' studio head, Mihai Preda.
  • Nerf Legends is an FPS where you wield Nerf blasters in a science-fiction future as a hopeful contestant who has entered the Nerf Trials, a gauntlet-style competition.
  • Nerf Legends is available today for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S

Welcome to the world of Nerf Legends! I am Mihai Preda, the studio head here at Fun Labs and we're excited to be making a video game based on one of our favorite childhood (and adult, if we're being honest) toys.

Nerf Legends is an FPS where you wield Nerf blasters in a science-fiction future. You're a hopeful contestant who has entered the Nerf Trials, a gauntlet-style competition where the blasters are enhanced. The blasters are leveled-up and feel fun to use, and your goal is to make it through the winding courses to defeat robots, puzzles, and eventually the Nerf Masters. The story focuses on the idea of proving your ability with the blasters and making it to the end of the competition to face off against the mysterious Grand Master. Doing so will win you the ultimate prize of being crowned a Nerf Legend.

Nerf Legends

We took inspiration from the blasters to build in some unique gameplay elements. For example, as any person who has played with a Nerf blaster before knows that this eventually leads to your floor being littered with foam darts. We liked this as a game concept and true to life, when you blast darts in the game, they will scatter about the ground, and you must pick them up quickly to replenish your ammo. This idea of blasting and picking up darts makes for some interesting gameplay strategies. For example, as opponents blast at you, they're basically giving you ammo which you can pick up and fire back and vice versa.

We also looked beyond playing with real Nerf blasters to other video games for inspiration. We have quite a few people in the studio that play a wide range of shooters and other games. No single game was a direct inspiration for our work in Nerf Legends, but the FPS genre offers a lot of excellent games to reflect on.

Nerf Legends

We also have plenty of unique gameplay mechanics, too, that you don't see often in other FPS games. Early in the prototyping phase, someone had the idea to add trampoline-like bounce pads and it was something everyone enjoyed right away. We toyed around with this mechanic quite a bit. Sometimes they are used just to jump up to higher platforms or another part of a level, and other times they're used in puzzles. For example, imagine trying to hit opponents or other targets while hopping through the air or using a jump pad to leap into the middle of the action. This gameplay eventually led to the idea of turning a trampoline on its side and we created what we call accelerators. Accelerators propel you like a cannonball into the level and so it became a whole new way to think about traversal. These mechanics, in turn, inspired some of our level designs as a result.

In many ways the blasters are the stars of the game, but there's no template for what the universe of Nerf should look and feel like and that gave us a lot of freedom to go into some interesting directions. In Nerf Legends you scale castle walls, run through bays full of futuristic Viking ships, catapult between cliffs in a jungle mountain, zip through a gigantic spaceport, and much more. There is just so much variety in the levels, and none of it is taken too seriously. For us, it was all about the joy factor and making levels that were fun to use blasters in. We hope players are surprised and delighted by that.

Nerf Legends

Nerf Legends has a full single-player campaign, but there are also plenty of online multiplayer game modes. Solo Nerf Out and Team Nerf Out is our deathmatch and team deathmatch, but without the death. Players in the game are tagged out once defeated, hence the naming. Nerf Siege is our king of the hill type game mode and then there is the Golden Dart mode. Golden Dart is like capture the flag, but it has an interesting twist. It's a team-play mode where players score by tagging out other players, but the team scores if they capture the golden dart and use it to blast and hit a target that moves around the map. The player carrying the golden dart loses the dart if it is fired or they get tagged out, so the teammates must try to protect them.

The Nerf brand and the Nerf blasters really are the perfect toy to adapt to a video game. We have tried our best to stay truthful to Nerf's core values and amplify everything fun about playing with the blasters in real life, all while breaking boundaries to create a heightened Nerf experience that would be impossible have in real-life. We're looking forward to jumping online and playing Nerf Legends with you!

Battlefield 2042 Available Now for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S

Posted: 19 Nov 2021 06:00 AM PST

Summary

  • Enter a world on the brink in the epic multiplayer game Battlefield 2042, available today for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
  • Experience three dynamic gameplay modes – All-Out Warfare, Hazard Zone, and Portal – each delivering visceral and iconic Battlefield experience the series is known for.
  • Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members with EA Play can play a 10-hour trial as part of their membership.

Let's squad up, solider! Battlefield 2042 is now available worldwide on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, bringing you to a near-future where a world is on the brink of chaos. Food shortages, energy scarcity, and polluted water are commonplace as nations begin to collapse fighting over these vital resources, all the while the United States and Russia continue a global conflict impacting everyone in their wake. This is the backdrop for you, solider, as you step into the shoes of "The Non-Patriated" (a.k.a. "No-Pats") who are fighting to try and restore order in this global war on resources.

Battlefield 2042 can be experienced across three dynamic gameplay modes, each offering their own blend of multiplayer warfare and iconic Battlefield moments the series has come to be known for in All-Out Warfare, Hazard Zone, and Portal along with the new Specialists feature.

Specialists bring a new dimension to the core Battlefield experience

New for Battlefield 2042 is the introduction of Specialists, an evolution of the classic team-based approach to squads. This new feature will allow squads to mix and match their playstyles to focus on the way they want to play. Each Specialist features a Specialty and a Trait that can only be used by them. When combined with a ton of loadout customization options (weapon, grenades, gadgets, etc.), you have a lot of choice in creating and playing as a solider that suits your style of play.

Enter a massive combat zone in All-Out Warfare

Featuring fan-favorite modes Conquest and Breakthrough, All-Out Warfare includes the largest maps ever created for the franchise with support for up to 128 players on Xbox Series X|S and 64 players on Xbox One. This massive scale can lead to some incredible gameplay experiences, including a ton of choices in how your team can decide to attack your opponents on the battlefield with distinct sectors that will yield some epic clashes over map control.

Engage in high-stakes tactical combat with Hazard Zone

Dialing back the team size, but keeping the large maps in place, Hazard Zone puts you in the boots of a tactical four-person squad that has you seeking out intel from crashed satellites while combating not only rival squads, but local AI controlled occupying forces. Oh, and a massive storm system that's quickly moving into the combat zone. Completing missions will yield Dark Market Credits that you can use to spend on improvements to your squad and loadout for the next time you enter the combat zone, as you'll strive to retrieve as many Data Drives as you can before you're forced to evacuate, kicking off a hectic, last-minute scramble to safety. You can learn more about Hazard Zone here on Xbox Wire.

Play in the world's most dynamic sandbox in Battlefield Portal

This community-driven platform lets you discover and create a wide variety of surprising battles made up from elements of Battlefield's past. 1942 vs 2042? Knives vs. Defibrillators? 1 tank against 20 EOD Bots? You got it. You make up the rules and then jump on the battlefield to experience this mix of nostalgia and cutting-edge tech. If you prefer to relive some moments like you remember them, albeit with a fresh coat of next-gen paint, a few of the classic map experiences you can play today in Portal include Battlefield 1942 (Conquest), Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (Rush), and Battlefield 3 (Conquest).

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members with EA Play can play a 10-hour trial of Battlefield 2042

As part of your membership as an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate member, you have access to EA Play which includes access to a massive collection of EA games and member only rewards. One of those that's available today is a 10-hour trial of Battlefield 2042 that let's you enjoy everything the game has to offer. Best of all, any progress made during the trial will carry over to the full game should you purchase it on the Xbox Store. And don't forget: Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and EA Play members can save 10% on Battlefield 2042 purchases on the Xbox Store.

Pick the version that's right for you

Battlefield 2042 is available now on the Xbox Store for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S in a variety of editions. There's the base game edition, Battlefield 2042 for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S that retails for $69.99. Then there's the Battlefield 2042 Gold Edition for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S that includes the Year 1 Pass which includes 4 new Specialists, 4 Battle Passes, and 3 Epic Skin Bundles at $99.99. And finally, there's the Battlefield 2042 Ultimate Edition for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S that includes everything in the Gold Edition, plus the Midnight Ultimate Bundle, an Official Digital Artbook, and the Exclusive Digital Soundtrack at $119.99.

No matter which version you choose, you'll still get to experience all the epic multiplayer gameplay that Battlefield 2042 has to offer. Now, squad up and move out! We'll see you on the battlefield.

Czech & Slovak Games Week Is in Full Swing

Posted: 18 Nov 2021 01:00 PM PST

The second annual event to celebrate Czech and Slovak Games Week is here. This time, the unique Czech & Slovak Games Week event kicked off on the occasion of the national holiday of November 17,  offering discounts on locally produced games.

Now, let's get back in history to understand why Czech and Slovak games matter so much. Prior to the fall of the Iron Curtain, people on the eastern side who wanted to make or even play games had very little opportunity to do so. The first generation of developers coming from the lands which used to form the federation of Czechoslovakia until 1992 didn't get a chance to play most of the titles considered as classics or industry standards. The console market was practically non-existent until the beginning of the millennium. This resulted in Czech and Slovak games being very different – believe it or not, mostly in a good way.

We're looking to build on the huge success of last year's Czech & Slovak Games Week, and great news: to support these unique regional games, some of our favorites will be on sale during the event. We've highlighted a few just for a taste of what's in store.

So, how do the games coming from studios based in the Czech Republic and Slovakia differ from your usual gaming experience? First, it is the unprecedented focus on realism and high, but fair difficulty, which triggered the success of games like Space Engineers. Here’s a look at the latest DLC pack in this one-of-a-kind sandbox space sim:

Second, it is the artistic virtuosity of games coming from Amanita Design, like Machinarium or their recently released title Creaks.

creaks key art

Amanita's games are unique in many ways: Hand-drawn animation makes you feel like you're in a (sometimes scary) fairy tale, their games also don't usually have any written dialogue which makes Amanita's games very accessible.

titled key art

Another great example is the work of the studio Circus Atos and the titles like Under Leaves or Little Mouse’s Encyclopedia. Their games come with soothing music, they allow children to learn things in a playful way and are relaxing for adults at the same time.

little mouse key art

Whenever those two qualities manage to meet perfectly, major international success is born. That is the story of games like Vaporum or Rememoried.

vaporum key art

All the aforementioned titles and talented creators have secured spot on the global gaming map for Czech Republic and Slovakia. The rise of indie scene has followed quickly, without the historic burden which fundamentally affected the previous generation of developers. Tons of games are released every year, ranging from small platformers like Feudal Alloy or YesterMorrow to more ambitious indie titles like Dex or Blackhole.

Dex ley art

Three or four titles coming from the Czech Republic within the list of best-sellers on any given platform were not an unusual sight during the past decade. That is an astonishing achievement by creators coming from a country with a population about as big as North Carolina. If you haven't played some of the Czech and Slovak classics yet, this is a chance you don't want to miss. If you can’t make it this year, mark your calendar for next year and check out the game page to see what’s going on. For everyone else, see you on the floor!

Pixel Art Sci-Fi RPG Undungeon Available Today with Xbox Game Pass

Posted: 18 Nov 2021 12:00 PM PST

Summary

  • Explore a rich post-apocalyptic pixel art open world with random encounters and ambushes.
  • Customize your hero by implanting organs in their body to fit your playstyle.
  • Dive deep into a mind-bending science fiction story about a Multiverse on the verge of destruction.

We’re excited to announce that Undungeon, a pixel art sci-fi ARPG, is available today with Xbox Game Pass! Our team has been on quite a journey: Undungeon has been in development for 6 years now. Today, with the launch, we are thrilled to see how the gaming community will react to it.

What is Undungeon? First and foremost, it’s a visual experience like no other. We tried to create a world that you immediately felt at home in and also like something you've never seen before. The pixel art style seemed like a perfect fit for the team's ambitious sci-fi vision.

Undungeon

We’ve assembled a team of 13 people, 4 of them being artists. Countless hours have been invested in drawing and animating our exquisite environments and characters by hand to make the player say: “I want to explore this world!” If we were to talk about our inspirations, “Dune” by Frank Herbert and some of the most iconic-looking pixel art titles like Moonlighter would come to mind.

Story and lore are other key features we have been focusing on while in pursuit of immersion. Undungeon is set in Multiverse, where seven dimensions find themselves on the verge of virulent turmoil. You are Void: a messenger, a Herald created by your dimension and sent to an ancient city of Archaban to collect six seals that belong to other worlds. As you travel through space and time, the Multiverse gets rocked by a devastating cataclysm of unknown nature, leaving you stranded in a barren alien land. To find your way out of this hostile desert, you will have to communicate with local tribespeople.

Undungeon

To create a living, breathing universe, we focused our efforts around lore. It covers tens of thousands of years, from ancient times long since gone to the present day clouded by fear and uncertainty. Our game includes over 150,000 words of text and dialogue. Decisions you make during your journey can have enormous consequences on the ending.

Undungeon is an action-oriented, role-playing game which means that it will not go down without a fight. Some hostile animals and locals are not happy with your sudden invasion of their ecosystem and will want to stop you. You will have a wide array of weapons at your disposal, including different claws for melee combat and ranged tools like bombs, knives, and other deadly projectiles. The game also has an unorthodox healing system where you deploy a healing item and land a strike to refill your HP points. Just make sure it doesn’t get stolen when you need it.

Undungeon

Another innovative system our game is going to introduce is the organ transplantation system. Loot organs from killed adversaries or craft them from organic matter to give your body more powerful abilities. The Core is the main viral organ of your body you can enhance and customize, allowing for different builds: from "tanking" to applying DoT(Damage over Time) or critical damage to recruited companions. We have done our best to make sure the character-building mechanic is as deep as it can get with a wide variety of build styles, and we hope each player will adjust their hero to the playstyle that suits them the best.

Two worlds will be available at launch, much like with the characters. The Wastelands, where Void finds himself stranded after a failed trip to Archaban, is a windswept outback with a harsh dry climate, aggressive fauna, and strange tribes that populate its rocky vastness. The second world, Lutenland, appears as lush yet hazardous marshy land. All kinds of arachnids, reptiles, and amphibians dwell in this land of ancient ruins, mysteries, and inevitably, danger.

Undungeon

Undungeon focuses heavily on exploration. We're introducing a global map with random events to add the element of uncertainty and surprise to each journey.

Undungeon is available today with Xbox Game Pass and we sincerely hope you’ll like it. Stay up to date by following us on Twitter and join our Discord server.

Undungeon is an action role-playing experience that brings back the spirit of old school action/RPGs wrapped in modern design. Restore the order in all dimensions, influence and determine the fate of the worlds, create and decide what will happen in the new Multiverse. Colorful pixel art aesthetics: each tree, bush or rock is hand-drawn, each enemy has dozens of carefully crafted animation frames to create a one-of-a-kind visual experience; Mind-bending science fiction story: Several multidimensional versions of Earth were suddenly merged together, shattering one another in a cataclysmic event known as the Great Shift. This event damaged the fabric of time and space itself, seemingly beyond reconstruction. You, a Herald, will join a secret interdimensional organization — Herald's Undercover Bay, or simply H.U.B., created by Dharma to remedy the aftermath of the catastrophe; Heated real-time battles: control a Herald — almighty hero created by God. Combine his powerful melee and ranged attacks to vanquish your enemies. Heal carefully so that foes don't steal your remedy, use movement, various buffs, and debuffs to gain the advantage and defeat your rivals; Customizable hero: implant different organs into the body of your Herald to acquire unique combat enhancers and passive abilities. Gather and equip nodes and runes to make your Herald godlike. Express yourself, create a build that fits your playstyle perfectly, be it companions, throwable weapons, critical or DoT damage and much more; Crafting system: deep crafting systems that allow you to disassemble basic materials and create from received resources unique organs, weapons, gear and consumables that will help you to define your unique playthrough; Vast open world: explore distant lands beyond belief and meet their exotic inhabitants — merchants and bandits going about their lives regardless of where you go. You can trade with locals, recruit them to help you in battles, or even destroy their camps. Between missions, you can recover, gear up and rest in H.U.B. — a base located in a neutral space expanse between dimensions; NPC interaction system: decisions you make as a Herald will affect the fates of the characters you meet, as well as whole dimensions.
