You Could Win Some Gold Points In The Mario Kart 8 Deluxe North American Open Posted: 14 Mar 2022 01:00 PM PDT Nice little cash prizes from Nintendo (sort of). Nintendo has been continuing its promotion of online and competitive play in some key titles, albeit without blowing the doors off and gaining a lot of attention. Particularly through the Nintendo Versus account it highlights frequent competitions in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Splatoon 2, in particular. The next MK8 Deluxe North American Open has had a bit of extra promotion from the broader Nintendo of America account, no doubt tapping into expectation for this week's release of DLC through the 'Booster Course Pass'. Random: Um, Why Has Square Enix Re-Uploaded The Final Fantasy 9 Trailer? Posted: 14 Mar 2022 12:00 PM PDT This has us in a trance. Final Fantasy IX, the game that the father of the Final Fantasy franchise Hironobu Sakaguchi has called his favourite, is already out on Switch. It came out in 2019. It even got a physical release back in 2020. Why, oh why, then, has Square Enix decided to re-upload the game's trailer on its Japanese YouTube account? Read the full article on nintendolife.com |
Talking Point: Not A Mario Kart Tour Fan? Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC Gives You The Best Of Both Worlds Posted: 14 Mar 2022 11:00 AM PDT Awesome for us Mario Kart Tour holdouts. The internet's a funny place. For years there was wailing and gnashing of teeth as the mobile-only Mario Kart Tour got all-new tracks and much-loved classics — "bring that content to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe!", we demanded. Then the Booster Course Pack is announced and lots of (probably the same) people said "What!? You're using Mario Kart Tour content? Ugh, that's so lazy". Well, that's one set of perspectives your humble scribe has seen and the personal response has been a shrug of the shoulders. So what if Nintendo is re-using content from a mobile game? If it has been optimised to run at 60fps and look shiny on Switch, then that's marvellous. Sure, it's an easy-win approach, but it's also 48 tracks across nearly two years, doubling the number of courses in the game. And also, we're not all avid Mario Kart Tour players, either. Kirby Is Getting An Official Concert To Celebrate His 30th Birthday Posted: 14 Mar 2022 10:00 AM PDT Put on your conductor's hat. The Kirby series' 30th anniversary is fast approaching, as is the release of the pink puffball's next game, Kirby and the Forgotten Land. And it looks like we're going to have a big music festival to celebrate one of Nintendo's most recognisable, and cutest, characters. For a moment, we were ready to be disappointed. Nintendo UK shared the Grand Opening from the series' 25th Anniversary concert. And, as good as that concert was, we thought that was all we were going to get. Luckily, just a little while later, the official Kirby account shared its plans for the round guy's next big celebration (thanks, Nibel). Read the full article on nintendolife.com |
Reggie Fils-Aimé Criticises GameStop Management's Lack Of "Articulated" Strategy Posted: 14 Mar 2022 09:15 AM PDT "To me that was not acceptable". Reggie Fils-Amie was at SXSW this weekend to talk about the current disruption in the entertainment industry market, and during his talk at the show, he was asked about his thoughts on a number of things, inclusing Facebook's metaverse. Naturally, at that same talk, Nintendo of America's former President was also questioned about GameStop. Reggie served on the retailer's Board of Directors from April 2020 to June 2021. GameStop was another of the many companies hit hard by the pandemic and the increase in digital sales. Reggie joined the board hoping that he could help the company out. "The gaming industry needs a healthy and vibrant GameStop," he said about his appointment on Twitter back in 2020. "I look forward to being a part of GameStop's corporate board and helping to make this happen." Read the full article on nintendolife.com |
Random: Nintendo Gave Tingle's Creator An Amazing Custom Game & Watch As A Leaving Gift Posted: 14 Mar 2022 08:30 AM PDT His post-Nintendo life has been a Ball. What's the best gift you've ever received from an employer? A voucher? A box of chocolates? Maybe a company paperweight? Well, if you worked for Nintendo and your name is Takaya Imamura, then you're definitely the winner of this competition. The legendary designer, famous for the F-Zero car designs, creating Majora's Mask's unusual map maker Tingle and the terrifying Moon, as well as introducing Fox McCloud and friends to the world, left Nintendo over a year ago. And today, Imamura shared with the world Nintendo's parting gift to him: Read the full article on nintendolife.com |

Review: Persona 4 Arena Ultimax - Not The Persona You're Looking For, But Still A Fine Fighter Posted: 14 Mar 2022 07:00 AM PDT "We have Persona 4 at home". Welcome to Atlus, Switch fans, the company that really doesn't want you to play any mainline Persona games, but does want you to play their canon sequels. Last year, we got Persona 5 Strikers, a surprisingly great Warriors-style follow up to the seminal Persona 5. This year, we're getting Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, a *checks notes* remaster of a fighting game that serves as a sequel to both Persona 3 and Persona 4. As oddly positioned as this project may feel, we're happy to report that Persona 4 Arena Ultimax proves itself to be a competent fighter on Switch, one that we think will appeal both to fans of the Persona brand and to fighting game newcomers. First off, let's recap what's all included here. Persona 4 Arena Ultimax packs in quite a lot of content, featuring the stories of both the original P4A and P4AU alongside all the DLC from across those two games. This means that all the additional fighters, a staggering amount of cosmetic options for each of them, and an additional story mode have all been thrown in. Behind the scenes, this is also including all of the '2.5' content from the Japanese exclusive arcade release of P4AU, which integrated a bunch of balancing changes to make for an overall better feeling experience. In short, this is the most feature-rich version of P4AU yet, and it all comes now with the benefit of being portable. Read the full article on nintendolife.com |

Update: - The final trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has now been released from Paramount Pictures. As expected, some of the more 'out-there' images from below didn't make the cut and we're quite sad not to see Idris Elda wearing Knuckles' gloves. Nevertheless, the trailer looks wonderful and we can't wait to see the movie! Read the full article on nintendolife.com |
Random: Reggie Fils-Aimé Doesn't Think Much Of Facebook's Metaverse Posted: 14 Mar 2022 06:15 AM PDT "I don't think their current definition will be successful". SXSW kicked off this weekend, and former Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aimé was in attendance at the show to talk to Bloomberg's Emily Chang about disruption in the entertainment and leisure markets. During the interview, Reggie — now non-executive director for Spin Master Inc. and Brunswick Corp. — was asked about his thoughts on the metaverse, the ephemeral 'network' of 3D worlds touted to link us all digitally and socially in fascinating new ways... maybe. Or perhaps it'll be more like Second Life but the Batman and Spider-Man chilling the beans together. Yes, in the future IP lawyers will surely run everything. Deckbuilder 'City Wars: Tokyo Reign' Gets A New Name And Overview Trailer Posted: 14 Mar 2022 05:30 AM PDT Will have over 140 cards. Last year we shared details of Chrono Trigger, a deckbuilding roguelike from Mojo Bones, the developers of excellent 3DS eShop title Siesta Fiesta. It's now changed name to City Wars: Tokyo Reign, and has an extensive overview trailer that highlights how it'll work. As you can see it has its own spin on the genre, opting for a timeline UI approach and a battlefield that evolves and keeps you on your toes; it'll also have over 140 cards to obtain and will be a premium title (not free-to-play with microtransactions). Metroidvania 'FIST: Forged In Shadow Torch' Rated For Switch In Taiwan Posted: 14 Mar 2022 04:15 AM PDT Is a port imminent? Metroidvania fans can often rejoice at the offerings they get on Switch, and it looks like another one might be coming our way! F.I.S.T.: Forged in Shadow Torch has been rated for the console in Taiwan, as highlighted by Gematsu. The game stars an anthropomorphic ex-pilot bunny who must make his way through Torch City. We know that sounds cute and cuddly, but F.I.S.T.: Forged in Shadow Torch is anything but. Boasting difficult platforming and tough-as-nails arcade-style combat, this is one Metroidvania that will get your cottontail in a spin. Read the full article on nintendolife.com |
Artist Larry Achiampong On How Nintendo And Gaming Influenced His Art Posted: 14 Mar 2022 03:30 AM PDT "That's where my film language comes from". Video games, at least in the 'modern' term as we know it, is a young creative industry compared to other artistic forms. Since becoming more mainstream in the mid-late 1980s - and earlier if you account for successes like Atari in North America - it's naturally influenced and inspired a lot of creators, and we're increasingly seeing the impact of gaming across other artforms. An interesting recent example is from Larry Achiampong, a British Ghanaian artist who has produced varied work from painted collages, to sculptural art and most recently film, with more besides. In an interview with The Guardian the artist talks about their most recent film, Wayfinder, and the conversation goes to some interesting points about sources of inspiration. Feature: How Audio Description Can Make Trailers And Video Gaming More Accessible Posted: 13 Mar 2022 09:00 AM PDT We chatted to AD experts, Descriptive Video Works. Accessibility in games is an important topic that has been receiving a lot more well-deserved attention over the past few years, in large part thanks to accessibility advocates and large companies taking up the mantle. But we still have a long way to go — as recent discussions over the difficulty and accessibility of games like Elden Ring have highlighted — and part of that is understanding that so many parts of the video game media cycle are inaccessible to huge swathes of the population. There are many things that a lot of us, who have never had to deal with disabilities or difficulties, take for granted, like being able to distinguish between colours in a game, being able to see other people's screenshots on social media, and being able to play games without subtitles (or minuscule, unreadable subtitles, which is just as bad). Random: Console Modder Makes "Fake Portable GameCube" Mock-Up A Reality Posted: 12 Mar 2022 08:05 AM PST "It's real now". Reflect on previous Nintendo generations, and you might remember mock-ups of portable GameCube handhelds inspired by the Game Boy Advance SP. If you've ever wanted a real version of something like this, well...that's exactly what console modder and YouTuber 'GingerOfOz' has created. The modder has been able to shrink this mock-up down to a Game Boy Advance SP-style handheld unit. In truth, it's actually running a "trimmed" Wii motherboard inside of it, which obviously supports Nintendo's library of GameCube games. Read the full article on nintendolife.com |
