Listen, maybe I'm late to the party and everyone else knows this, but did you know there's a very likely explanation for all of Breath of the Wild's weird shrine names?

This whole time, I've been thinking that there must be some explanation for the really weird shrine names, like Bareeda Naag and Daka Tuss Shrine, which both sound like a Sim ordering a curry. Eventually, though, I gave up on trying to figure it out — only to have the answer dropped on me like a bombshell, five years after finishing the game.

Reminder: Mario Strikers: Battle League 'First Kick' Demo Event Starts This Weekend

With only a week to go until kick-off in Mario Strikers: Battle League, Nintendo dropped a surprise demo for the game that'll let you get your keepie uppies in before the whistle blows on 10th June.

This limited-time demo will allow you to hop into training mode to try out the characters and the new gameplay elements. The demo is available now for Nintendo Switch Online members, but those without a subscription can sign up for a 7-day free trial fthat will include cloud saves, classic games, and access to online play.

Unless you've been living under a rock recently, you may have seen the latest trailer for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. As expected, it gave us a pretty in-depth look at the new entries to the core series, unveiling some new Pokémon, the game's professors and rival characters, the two new legendaries, and the box art. In addition, we learned a bit more about what the games themselves will entail, including a full open world to be explored at will, along with 4-player cooperative multiplayer.

Given that the game seems to be a pretty significant step up in quality — at least in terms of exploration and connectivity — we wanted to know whether the latest trailer has done enough to convince you to jump back into the Pokémon universe.

New Sonic Frontiers Gameplay Lets The Blue Blur Show Off His Combat Skills

We've got some more Sonic Frontiers footage today as part of IGN's month-long series. After Wednesday's divisive exploration gameplay, maybe some combat will help pick up the pace for the blue blur's upcoming open-world game?

This time we get to see Sonic go up against enemies we've not seen the likes of before. This is also the first time we've seen the blue blur trade some blows in Frontiers' new world. From the 6 minutes of footage, it looks like Sonic can home in on enemies, punch, kick, and circle them.

Nintendo Confirms It Will Not Attend Gamescom This Year

Nintendo has confirmed that it will not attend Gamescom this year in any capacity.

In a statement to Games Wirtschaft (many thanks, VGC), a representative for Nintendo confirmed that the company would be focusing on other events in Germany, stating that "after careful consideration, we decided not to participate in Cologne".

Delphox Will Burst Into Pokémon Unite Next Week

The newest combatant coming to Pokémon Unite will arrive very soon! Following the Psychic-type Eeveelution Espeon into battle is another Pocket Monster who knows a thing or two about Confusion.

Delphox, the final evolution of the Fire starter Fennekin from Pokemon X & Y, will be joining the roster on 9th June (or 8th June if you're in North America). Fans have suspected that Delphox would be the next addition to the game after dataminers uncovered its data alongside Espeon. This Fox Pokémon is known for its mix of Fire and Psychic-type moves, and was a pretty controversial evolution back when Generation 6 first launched.

Gothic Fairytale Crafting Game 'Wytchwood' Is Getting A Physical Release

Alientrap Games' Wytchwood was a delightful little crafting game that launched at the tail end of last year, and it charmed us in our 7/10 review with "its focus purely on the act of gathering materials to create a wide range of objects, with little else to distract from the core crafting mechanic."

Devolver Digital Teases Its Upcoming Game Showcase, Featuring Suda51

We're slowly but surely starting to get more information regarding upcoming showcases surrounding the Summer Game Fest 2022 (just nothing from Nintendo yet...), and Devolver Digital has stepped out of the shadows to tease their upcoming Devolver Digital Direct 2022 showcase on June 9th at 3pm PT / 11pm BST.

In a short video posted on YouTube, the (surprisingly slick) production is little more than an amusing skit to let viewers know of their upcoming show, with a heavy emphasis on marketing-fuelled countdown timers. In a neat little surprise, however, the video ends with Suda51 himself making a brief appearance, exclaiming "what's up, nerds!". It's unclear if Suda51 will actually feature on June 9th in any capacity, but our presumption is that his appearance is strictly limited to this video.

Review: Souldiers - A Potent Metroidvania And Soulslike Blend, But Not Without Issues

These days, it feels like you can hardly go a week without seeing another handful of games that are inspired by any combination of Metroidvanias, Soulslikes, or roguelikes. Souldiers—the first release from a new development studio called Retro Forge—is an interesting blend of those first two genres, pulling some of the best elements from both to make for a potent and memorable experience. Though Souldiers doesn't quite manage to stick the landing perfectly, it does enough right that it certainly warrants a fair look.

Souldiers initially takes place in the kingdom of Zarga, which is at war with the neighboring country of Dadelm. Following the advice of the court magician, General Brigard leads his regiment through a cave to set up a counterattack, only for an earthquake to strike and trap all of them inside. Some time later, a mysterious Valkyrie appears and tells the warriors that they all unfortunately died, but they can come along with her if they'd like another shot at life. Left with little choice, Brigard chooses to go with the Valkyrie and is joined by some of his men, who soon find themselves in the land of Terragaya—a dangerous realm between life and death. Here, Brigard and his men hope to get to the bottom of what led to their demise, and perhaps even find some way to come back to life to save their kingdom.

If you've managed to watch Stranger Things 4 by now, you might have caught the rather bizarre mention of the 'Americantendo', a hypothetical 16-bit console that's mentioned by the character Argyle. Don't worry if you haven't seen it yet, that's all the context we'll be providing here for fear of spoilers!

Well, Hyperkin has gone the extra mile and created a mock-up of what the 'Americantendo' might actually look it if it were real. The console and controller both sport colours from the flag of the United States, with the word 'Americantendo' showcased prominently just below the console's cartridge slot.

Remember how ludicrously fun International Track & Field 2000 was back in the day? It seems absurd to imagine such a niche franchise appealing to anyone but the most fervent of sports fans, but it did. Its sheer simplicity and replayability kept us hooked for hours.

The Johto region is coming to Pokémon Smile! If you — like many of us — had forgotten about the smartphone app that encourages kids to brush their teeth, then don't feel too bad. The app only received its first update last November, and The Pokémon Company has finally scrubbed up enough for a second.

Here's How The Klonoa Collection Stacks Up Against Wii And PS2 Counterparts

Wahoo! Klonoa's long-awaited return is almost upon us with Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series releasing on 8th July. And while the wait is getting unbearable for some, Bandai Namco Entertainment Asia has dropped a comparison trailer for the game, which pits the Klonoa: Door to Phantomile and Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil remakes up against their "original" versions.

Now, "original" is in quotes for a reason, as the video for the first game is actually comparing it to Klonoa on Wii, the 2008 remake of the PlayStation original. That might be a closer comparison, but we're not complaining.

Capcom's Next Street Fighter Game Won't Be A PlayStation Console Exclusive

Nintendo systems and Street Fighter games have a long-running history, but the last time we actually got a proper mainline game was Street Fighter IV 3D Edition for the 3DS. The situation hasn't just been tough for Nintendo fans, either. Xbox players missed out on Street Fighter 5 last generation due to Capcom doing a deal with Sony - making it exclusive to the PlayStation.

Fortunately, things are looking up for console players who don't happen to own a PlayStation device. After concerns this trend could continue with the next generation systems, Capcom today confirmed the new game - Street Fighter 6 - would be coming to both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2023. Aurora from Child of Light is ready for battle!

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night didn't exactly start off life on the Nintendo Switch in the best state, but since then, the experience has been improved with regular patches and updates - including some new content.

In a crossover we didn't see coming (at least until March 2022), Bloodstained has now added in Aurora from Ubisoft's platformer RPG, Child of Light. Admittedly it's a bit of an odd one, but hey - it's another free update, so we're not complaining!

Talking Point: Video Game Music Is More Popular Than Ever, So Why Is Nintendo So Behind?

Make it music to our ears!

There's been a lot of Nintendo-related music news over the past year that has had me more than a little disappointed. I like to boot up a video game soundtrack while I'm working; I'm a big fan of video game music concerts and I have a small collection of albums and vinyl that I want to keep growing. And with access to video game music the best it's ever been, I'm generally a happy bunny.

But Nintendo has always been very protective of its properties, and that goes for the music in its games. You might remember, at last year's Tokyo 2020 Olympics, that there was a ton of video game music played during the opening ceremony – yet none of it was from a Nintendo-owned franchise. There were plans for Nintendo to make an appearance right up until 16th June, but the Big N and The Pokémon Company apparently pulled out at the last minute.
