Feature: Game Builder Garage Could Help Make The Next Generation Of Game Devs

Posted: 08 May 2021 10:00 AM PDT

"Anyone can be a game programmer".

Most of the game developers you know today, and even the ones you don't, grew up making games with some extremely arcane tools. Nintendo's newest game, Game Builder Garage, might look like it's aimed at kids — but it's part of a new era of game development that's more accessible than ever.

Nintendo's Ready For Acquisitions, When The Time Is Right

Posted: 08 May 2021 09:30 AM PDT

It's got $9.2 billion ready to go.

Mergers and acquisitions have been the talk of the town since Microsoft completed a $7.5 billion deal with Bethesda last year, so what's Nintendo's approach to acquisitions moving forward?

In a press conference following the company's full-year earnings results earlier this week, president Shuntaro Furukawa touched on Nintendo's ¥1 trillion ($9.2 billion) cash reserves and said any potential acquisitions in the future would likely be in response to "rapidly advancing" tech innovation.

Review: Before I Forget - A Poignant Portrayal Of Dementia

Posted: 08 May 2021 06:00 AM PDT

Full of colour and emotion.

It's not often that a game with a high profile tackles a particularly difficult and emotive illness, though when they get it right they're rightly lauded for bringing these topics into the gaming medium. Before I Forget earned attention and headlines - with some notable award nominations - for its portrayal of dementia, and we spoke to the developers to learn more. Having experienced the game on Nintendo Switch it's easy to understand the praise; Before I Forget approaches a delicate and often personal subject with due care and sensitivity. As a narrative experience it hits its marks, but is also clearly not a game that will appeal to all.

It's worth starting with a brief introduction to dementia as an illness, as it is the driver here for the narrative and game design. It's a disease most commonly associated with old age, though early onset dementia is becoming more known among younger sufferers. Its symptoms can be confusing and frightening, both for the victim and their loved ones; elements of paranoia and hallucinations can occur, in some cases. A common thread is what it does to a sufferer's memory - small details and snippets of memories from decades ago can be clear as day while current circumstances, tasks and routines can often be forgotten.

Video: Footage Of Sonic's Long Lost Kart Racing Game Has Resurfaced Online

Posted: 08 May 2021 05:25 AM PDT

A "Sonic Cafe" exclusive from 2005.

Believe it or not, but long before Team Sonic Racing there were other kart racing Sonic the Hedgehog video games.

One of the earlier entries you might not have heard about before is Sonic Kart 3DX (move aside, Sonic Drift). This was another portable outing, but it was a 2005 mobile game designed exclusively for Sega's "Sonic Cafe" service, which was only available in Japan.

Epic Apparently Wanted First-Party Exclusives From Nintendo, Microsoft And Sony On Its Digital Storefront

Posted: 08 May 2021 01:00 AM PDT

But thought a deal with Nintendo would be a "moonshot".

Take this with a grain of salt, but at some stage, the Fortnite creator Epic Games was apparently eager to get Sony, Microsoft and even Nintendo's first-party titles on its digital storefront - and for all we know, it could still be interested in making this happen one day.

According to yet another internal document from the ongoing Epic v Apple court case, that was made publically available for a short period of time according to PC Gamer - Epic was at least gauging the likelihood of getting first-party games from the big three console creators on its storefront.

Bandai Namco Just Registered Trademarks For The GameCube Exclusive Series Baten Kaitos

Posted: 07 May 2021 06:30 PM PDT

Is it time for a comeback?

Before Monolith Soft was developing the epic JRPG Xenoblade Chronicles, it was working with tri-Crescendo on Baten Kaitos.

Since the GameCube era - which saw the release of Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean in 2004/05 and Baten Kaitos Origins in 2006, there's been no sign of a return, apart from a cancelled Nintendo DS project.

Dead?! No, no, he's just stunned. Pinin' for the fjords, he is

We didn't think we would have to say this, because you've all been to a zoo, right? You know the bit where it says "please don't feed the animals"? Well, the implication is also that you shouldn't LOB UNDER-RIPE FRUITS AT THEM, EITHER.

Metroid Prime Trilogy Switch Port? Unlikely, Says Former Retro Studios Dev

Posted: 07 May 2021 01:30 PM PDT

Samus it ever was.

It's another tough week for Metroid fans, as Michael Wikan, the former lead designer on all three Metroid Prime games, took to Facebook to discuss why he thinks a Switch port of the Metroid Prime Trilogy isn't likely to happen.

"The biggest issue is no longer has functional editor tools to work with the Prime code base, so everything has to be "brute force" hard coded.

Random: This Minecraft Version Of Peach's Castle Includes A Secret Wario Room

Posted: 07 May 2021 12:00 PM PDT

MinecWAAAAAAAft.

Super Mario 64 never claimed that it was a realistic rendition of a castle, but still, we have to wonder — why are so many rooms in Peach's Castle empty? Why does she have a massive basement, but no bedroom? Did she ask her architect to include a bunch of long corridors, and forget to install a bathroom?

Nintendo Realises It Needs A 'How To Create A Mii' Video For Switch

Posted: 07 May 2021 10:00 AM PDT

Off you go to the depths of the Settings menu.

One of the great charms of the Wii was, of course, the humble Mii. The cute little avatars were right at the heart of the system and this would continue with Wii U; each boot-up of the HD system greeted us with hundreds of cute little Mii characters running into view and standing under their favourite game of the moment. On 3DS the fun twist was that you could use the system camera to generate a Mii that, quite often, would then look nothing like you. Mii heroes were at the heart of StreetPass and, of course, games like Miitopia and Tomodachi Life.

When Miitopia was announced for Switch it was a little surprising because, well, Mii characters are a bit of an afterthought on the current-gen system. They're around, and can be used in a variety of games or in funny profile poses, but there's no Mii app on the HOME page to grab your attention. They're such a low priority that you have to go to the bottom half of the rather dull settings page, which gives you access to the system-level Mii creator.

Random: Say Hello To The Wii SPii Portable, A GBA-Sized Console

Posted: 07 May 2021 09:00 AM PDT

The modding community strikes again.

The Wii is a much-loved console, and was actually rather cute and dinky back in the day when compared to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Nevertheless, current-day modders and hackers often look for new ways to play the system, with last year's WiiBoy Color being a good example.

The market for shrinking the console down to Game Boy-size isn't closed yet, with StonedEdge squeezing a Wii into a Game Boy Advance SP case. It's a relatively tight fit but is smartly done; controls inside the case consist of a mix of custom buttons and Joy-Con sticks, which will be ideal for drifting in Mario Kart Wii. A neat touch is that it even has analogue triggers, taking us back to the GameCube era.

Here's How The 'Blue' Switch Compares To The 'Purple' Game Boy Advance

Posted: 07 May 2021 07:30 AM PDT

See, they ARE different after all!

When Nintendo announced the new blue Switch Lite earlier this year, it triggered quite a bit of discussion online. Was it truly blue, or was it closer in hue to the purple GBA, or even the indigo GameCube? Perhaps it was 'Blurple' in your eyes; a halfway house between the two?

Well, now the machine is actually out, we're starting to see photos that directly compare the blue Switch Lite with the purple launch model GBA, and the difference in shade is quite striking, as you can see:

Talking Point: Should Nintendo Do More DLC For Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Or Just Release Mario Kart 9 Already?

Posted: 07 May 2021 07:00 AM PDT

2018's burning question, now updated for 2021!

Update: In the light of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe selling an incredible 10.6 million copies in 2020 alone, we've decided to resurrect this piece, which was originally published in July of 2018. Back then, we asked if you wanted to see Nintendo support the game with more DLC, and almost three years on, we're going to ask the same questions again.

In case you were wondering, here are the poll results from 2018. We've asked the same questions at the bottom of the page, so don't forget to recast your vote for 2021!

Random: Behold The Miya 2000, A Rare NES Accessory That Only Works With One Game

Posted: 07 May 2021 06:30 AM PDT

FORE!

Like any popular games console, the NES was host to some truly weird and wonderful accessories. Devices like the iconic Power Glove and the Brøderbund's U-Force tried to leverage the huge install base of Nintendo's system, but it's fair to say this was easier said than done and many of these products flopped at retail.

We assumed we'd seen all of the wacky peripherals released for the NES, but Nintendo Life reader Tony Johnson got in touch to share yet another – and it's one that is so obscure even he hasn't seen another example of it, and he actually owns one.

Review: SpongeBob: Krusty Cook-Off - A Bit Undercooked

Posted: 07 May 2021 06:00 AM PDT

We do this for forty years, and then we die.

Though not always deserved, mobile games have long since obtained a reputation for being rather shallow and money-grubbing affairs. And though the mobile space actually accounts for the lion's share of the profits raked in by the game industry year over year, this monetary growth is seen by many to come at the cost of good game design. SpongeBob: Krusty Cook-Off was always going to be a tough sell to the Switch audience, then, as this is unmistakably a mobile game that adheres to all the stereotypical trappings. Believe it or not, it's still an enjoyable game—especially considering that the microtransactions have been stripped out—but the shallow and repetitive design keeps it from having any real staying power.

SpongeBob: Krusty Cook-Off sees you taking control of various characters from the popular show and tasks you with getting behind the grill to serve up goods to an endless barrage of customers. There's a story (sort of) stringing the levels together, but it's nowhere near the quality of writing that the show was once known for. Characters basically just show up in stilted, voiceless dialogue scenes between levels and exchange some banal conversation that fits their personalities, then you move on to the next thing. Given the origins of this title, there's only so much you can expect out of these cutscenes, but they still come across as being rather cheap and uninspired, and clearly not written by the show's creators.

Thanks To Switch, Nintendo Has Now Sold Over Half A Billion Handheld Consoles

Posted: 07 May 2021 04:45 AM PDT

Portable power.

It's fair to say that Nintendo has been the king of the handheld console market for quite some time – and some would even argue that the Japanese company created the sector, via its insanely successful Game Boy system, launched in 1989.

Nintendo hasn't had the market all to itself during the past few decades – NEC, SNK, Atari, Sega, Bandai and Sony have all tried their hand at ending Nintendo's portable dominance (with wildly varying degrees of success, it should be noted) – but it has emerged victorious each and every time, so much so that it now has the handheld sector all to itself (albeit in the form of the Switch, which is a hybrid system capable of both on-TV and portable play).

Tattoo Punk Will Get Stylish On Switch In The 'Near Future'

Posted: 07 May 2021 03:30 AM PDT

Yep, another game with punk in the title.

Last year you couldn't swing an augmented cat without hitting another 'cyberpunk' game, as the whole world went nuts for anything set in the not-so-distant future in which the world is full of fancy tech and immoral living. Then the game inspiring all the cyberpunk games had an 'interesting' launch, but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Still, those vibes aren't completely gone yet, with Tattoo Punk apparently coming to Switch (and Steam) in the 'near future'. It actually looks quite interesting, as you run a tattoo parlour in the future; you'll get to create all the custom Bowser tattoos you want for customers, while also worrying about and running the business.
