World War 3 reemerges from the trenches with a development update Posted: 14 Jul 2021 03:05 PM PDT ![]() After pulling its early access version from sale in August 2020 to refocus on development, World War 3 has reemerged with an update on what its tactical shooting looks like. Developers The Farm 51 have released a new trailer going over a good chunk of changes they've been making based on feedback from the folks still playing, including map reworks, a vaulting system, kill cams, and more. |
Dell's Black Friday in July sale proves words mean nothing Posted: 14 Jul 2021 01:35 PM PDT ![]() Words mean nothing any more. Black Friday used to refer to the day after the Thanksgiving holiday in the US, when retailer saw the biggest crowds of the year at the start of the Christmas shopping season. Then, it became a bona fide shopping holiday, first in the US and then in the UK. Now, things have gone absolutely mad, as Dell UK has declared a 'Black Friday in July' sale happening right now. |
Death's Door shows off more of its Zelda-inspired crow adventures Posted: 14 Jul 2021 01:30 PM PDT ![]() Death's Door is nearly ready to leave the nest, but before it ventures forth it's called up a new trailer. The crow-based action adventure game from the folks behind Titan Souls has shown a bit more of its Zelda-inspired side with some dungeon-looking puzzles and slightly goofy NPCs. You can catch just another good look at it down here before it takes flight next week. |
This titanic 49-in Samsung gaming monitor is £277 off today Posted: 14 Jul 2021 12:56 PM PDT ![]() The Samsung CRG9 is an outstanding super ultrawide monitor, and today it's dropped to one of the lowest prices we've ever recorded for it. Right now you can pick up this 49-in marvel for just £824, a £277 reduction from its normal price of £1101 (quick maths). That's pretty outstanding when you consider this is basically the same as two 27-in 1440p 120Hz DisplayHDR 1000 monitors, perfectly joined into a single unit with no distracting bezel in the centre as you'd get from traditional dual display setups. |
Minecraft is generating incredible caves in the version 1.18 snapshot Posted: 14 Jul 2021 11:56 AM PDT ![]() Mojang may have notably snapped off the caves and cliffs bits from the first half of their Caves & Cliffs update to Minecraft, but it looks like the second half will be worth the wait. Mojang released an experimental snapshot for 1.18 yesterday and folks have started finding some absolutely wild worlds created by the new terrain generation. If you've not had time to take it for a spin for yourself, here are quite a few screenshots and videos of some things that have been spotted so far. |
The fixes are in after Diablo 2: Resurrected's technical alpha Posted: 14 Jul 2021 09:39 AM PDT ![]() Blizzard’s technomancers are elbow deep in Diablo 2: Resurrected’s guts. With a recent technical alpha letting players pass judgement on what’s been built so far, the team have been refining the game accordingly. Quite a few quality of life adjustments have been implemented from the feedback they received, and Blizzard have detailed a bunch of them for us. |
The demo for Id Software's Mario 3 PC port is now in a museum Posted: 14 Jul 2021 09:38 AM PDT ![]() Mario on PC was never meant to be, but the evidence of what it could have been has resurfaced. Id Software co-founder John Romero showed off a video back in 2015 of Id's 1990 pitch demo for a Super Mario Bros. 3 PC port. A build of that demo has now shown up in a donation to the Strong National Museum Of Play, including some bits that Romero didn't share back then. The Museum Of Play doesn't have plans to let the public get their hands on it, sadly, but it's been tucked away as an important part of early PC gaming lore. |
Watch the RPS Indies Uncovered stream at PAX East / EGX Rezzed 2021 Posted: 14 Jul 2021 09:00 AM PDT ![]() While we're a little bit closer to meeting up at the Tobacco Docks for some Zoom-less chats and interactive funtimes, we're not quite there yet. So, in lieu of in-person video games events, the lovely folks at EGX Rezzed (and our American cousins that are keeping all PAX-related things ticking over) are running two online events that kick off this weekend - and we'll be taking part with our returning Indies Uncovered stream. |
I could replay Forza Horizon 4's intro forever Posted: 14 Jul 2021 08:33 AM PDT ![]() My car game kick has evolved. After all that time spent watching hands play rally games beautifully, I decided it was time to place my own hands on the wheel and tentatively feather the clutch. To ease myself into the driver's seat, I opted for Forza Horizon 4, seeing as it's focused more on fun than the minutiae of tyre pressure. I was prepared for lots of nice cars and lovely Scottish scenery, but no-one told me that I'd fight back heart palpitations and tears in the first few minutes?! Forza Horizon 4's intro sequence might be the best welcome to a game I've ever played. It positively transformed my car game fix into a full-blown round-house kick; a kick that rocketed me up into the realm of the drum and bass gods who burn donuts into tarmac and dance among the smoke. |
Battlefield 2042 devs are surprised you loved the penguins so much Posted: 14 Jul 2021 08:05 AM PDT ![]() Blink and you'll miss them, but at around the 1:46 mark in the Battlefield 2042 Breakaway reveal trailer you can spot a waddle of penguins hanging out while futuristic tanks blast past them. There are two things you can learn here: 1) someone at Dice animated some bird pals specifically to put into the game, and 2) a group of penguins is named a "waddle". Naturally, the internet fell for these flightless friends, and now Dice have released a blog post chatting to the developer who decided to put them in. |
Battlefield 2042 will let you do monstrous things with your robodog Posted: 14 Jul 2021 08:00 AM PDT ![]() On a biiiig update post by EA answering a lot of questions about Battlefield 2042, what caught my eye were the fine details about Ranger the robodog. The military mutt isn’t tied to any particular class or character, meaning anyone can drop one into battle at any time. There’s no word on if you can pet it, but it sounds like a feisty companion, capable of lots of tactical tricks. |
Minecraft’s mega performance mod now supports shaders Posted: 14 Jul 2021 07:06 AM PDT ![]() In the past year, I’ve been in a battle between Minecraft’s performance and acceptable aesthetics. Ultimately, I came down on the side of performance. I installed a series of mods based around the Fabric API. They boosted my frame rate to the moon while retaining the game’s visual charm, but I couldn’t add any of Minecraft's best shaders to it. Shaders run on the Forge API, and require Optifine, which isn’t nearly as performance enhancing as the Sodium mod running on Fabric. It chafed. But I just discovered a mod that could change everything. Iris Shaders runs on Fabric and adds shader support to Sodium. The battle might be over! |
GTA 2-inspired Glitchpunk has early access in its sights Posted: 14 Jul 2021 04:24 AM PDT ![]() Top-down and totally OTT shooter Glitchpunk is aiming for an August 11th early access release date. I spotted it just before the Steam Game Fastival a few months ago, and was surprised at how grafting a Grand Theft Auto 2-style action game with hacking appealed to me. My memories of GTA 2 are so fast-paced that I get out of breath just remembering it, so stopping to do some nefarious and slow-paced activities seems like a perfect tweak. |
Apex Legends latest event adds a hot new Arenas map Posted: 14 Jul 2021 03:21 AM PDT ![]() While Apex Legends' excellent train and ye olde Kings Canyon map have gone away now, Respawn have added a spicy new map to the battle royale's Arenas mode in their place. Last night, the Thrillseekers event kicked off introducing Overflow, a purpose-built Arenas map set in what appears to be the lava-filled zones of World's Edge. I reckon it's the best map they've added yet for the 3v3 mode, and just in time for ranked Arenas to drop next season too. |
Red Dead Redemption 2 DLSS update spurs a 45% performance boost at 4K Posted: 14 Jul 2021 03:13 AM PDT ![]() Overly graphical Deadwood fanfic Red Dead Redemption 2 has just received its DLSS update. Nvidia’s upscaling tech claims some big boosts for the demanding game, suggesting that every RTX card will be capable of 60fps at 1920x1080 on max settings. For pixel pushers, you’ll still need a more recent RTX 30 series card to get 60fps on max settings at 2560x1440 (and at least an RTX 3070 to do the same at 4K), but this is still great news by and large given how intensive it is on the PC performance front. I’m still waiting for the update that will wipe the long conversations with Dutch from the game, but that’s looking increasingly unlikely. He’s the worst. |
Have You Played... Monster Hunter: World? Posted: 13 Jul 2021 11:30 PM PDT ![]() I fell off Monster Hunter: World a bit. I'm not really sure why, I think it's just because other games came out and I got swept up in them instead. But now I want to go back, but not really for the hunting or the exploring or the monsters. No, it's all about the hammer for me. |
Atlus tease 7 Persona announcements, probably 6 disappointments Posted: 13 Jul 2021 03:52 PM PDT ![]() Atlus have launched a website for Persona's 25th anniversary on which they tease seven announcements to come between September 2021 and autumn 2022. Those announcements will include "commemorative goods, various events, collaborations, and of course game information," reads a Google Translate of the page. There are maybe three ways here that Atlus could meet or exceed hopes regarding the Persona series, and approximately 1000 ways in which they could disappoint. |
