Feature: Masayuki Uemura, The Nintendo Engineer Who Helped Define The Modern Games Console

Posted: 09 Dec 2021 10:00 AM PST

A look back over the career of the NES and SNES' lead architect.

The sad news broke today that Masayuki Uemura, the lead architect on the NES and Super NES consoles, died on 6th December at the age of 78. Uemura was an instrumental figure in the formation of Nintendo as the video game company we know and love today — his hardware design credits date back to the 1970s, and he also has a fair list of software producer credits to his name. It's no exaggeration to say that millions of players across the world have his engineering skill and expertise to thank for the systems we played in our youth and the great memories we formed with them.

Born in 1943, Uemura grew up in post-war Japan and developed an interest in playing with and constructing his own toys from a young age, partly due to the scarcity of new products available in the years following the end of World War II. He studied at the Chiba Institute of Technology and upon graduating he began his career at Sharp Corporation before eventually joining Nintendo in 1972, thanks to his relationship with Gunpei Yokoi. The two met and worked together while Yokoi was investigating Sharp's technology for use in light gun games in the early 1970s and Uemura evidently impressed Nintendo's chief designer at the time.

'Lost' Namco Title That Inspired The First Live-Action Video Game Movie Is Coming To Switch

Posted: 09 Dec 2021 09:30 AM PST

Pre-dating Super Mario, Street Fighter and Double Dragon's movies.

Next week's Arcade Archives release is Mirai Ninja, a Japan-only Namco title from 1988 which was never ported to any home system, and holds a special place in video game history.

Released in the same year as Keita Amemiya's 1988 movie Mirai Ninja: Keigumo Kinin Gaiden (known as Cyber Ninja in the United States, Warlord in Canada and Robo Ninja in the UK), Mirai Ninja was powered by the Namco System 2 coin-op board and looks a lot like other ninja titles from the period, like Shinobi and Ninja Spirit. Amemiya, it should be noted, has since worked on video games like the Onimusha series and Shin Megami Tensei IV.

Star Renegades Will Add Free 'Prime Dimension' DLC Soon

Posted: 09 Dec 2021 09:00 AM PST

'Early 2022' for consoles.

Star Renegades was an excellent release in late 2020; we rather enjoyed its gameplay blend of roguelite, RPG and strategy in our review at the time. Developer Massive Damage has continued to work on the game since release, and now it has a major free DLC expansion on the way that'll give the game even more depth.

It's out on PC on 16th December, with consoles to get the update in early 2022 - hopefully not long, then. It'll add a new endgame challenges, additional units, and most importantly a new ending for the story.

Japanese Charts: Pokémon Diamond And Pearl Remakes Stay Top, Big Brain Academy Lands In Top Three

Posted: 09 Dec 2021 06:30 AM PST

As Switch locks out the entire top ten.

Famitsu's Japanese chart figures are now in for the week ending 5th December, revealing that Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have remained on top for a third consecutive week.

The two games sold another 164,580 physical copies combined in Japan last week, taking their total physical sales count to just over 1.9 million. After two weeks on the market, the titles were actually outpacing the sales set by Sword and Shield back in 2019, but as their third week comes to an end, Sword and Shield's three-week sales total of 2,023,043 leaves the Diamond and Pearl remakes playing catch up.

Review: Loop Hero - A Creative And Incredibly Addictive Distillation Of An RPG

Posted: 09 Dec 2021 06:00 AM PST

You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?

When you get right down to it, almost every game consists of a very simple loop. For example, every Mario 2D platformer ultimately is nothing more than having the famed plumber jump over obstacles and run to the right. We're rarely focused on the repetition, however, because it's the new things that happen on each new trip 'around the loop' that makes it so interesting. Loop Hero is the ultimate example of this; Devolver Digital's latest release is an RPG that's focused on… walking in circles. And yet it's impossible to put down.

Loop Hero puts you in the role of a nameless hero who's charged with bringing the world back after it was destabilized and eradicated by a mysterious lich. The world is now a formless void filled with bits and pieces of what used to be, and even the hero's memories of it have been eaten away, too. Luckily, your hero has the unique ability to cause things to stop fading, so you set out on a quest to slay the cosmic foes that ruined everything and hopefully find some way to bring it all back again.

Intense Shooter Severed Steel Gets More Updates Ahead Of Switch Launch

Posted: 09 Dec 2021 05:30 AM PST

Due on consoles in early 2022.

While the Switch may be short of a lot of the 'usual' first-person shooters, in terms of big franchises, there are a variety of interesting smaller options. Another that's due to arrive in early 2022 is Severed Steel, which focuses on fast and acrobatic gameplay.

It's been out a little while on Steam and the Epic store already, building an audience on PC and having a series of updates. The latest update makes some additions (like a New Game+), with more due to be added in Q1 2022 such as extended campaign stages. Hopefully it'll be a feature complete version that lands on consoles including Switch next year; some of the details are below:

Clockwork Aquario Just Nabbed A Guinness World Record From Duke Nukem Forever

Posted: 09 Dec 2021 03:45 AM PST

And it'll take some beating.

Last week saw the European launch of Clockwork Aquario on Switch (North America has to wait until next week), finally letting players enjoy a title that's been 30 years in the making. It's been a long time coming, but it was certainly worth the wait.

As it happens, the game's well-documented delay in development (the project actually started way back in 1991) has earned it a Guinness World Record. That's right, Clockwork Aquario now officially holds the record for the longest time between a video game project start and final release.

"I think we have accomplished all the things we could accomplish with console games".

It has been revealed that NES and SNES lead architect Masayuki Uemura passed away on December 6th at the age of 78.

The Famicom – the system that would become the NES in the west – was the brainchild of Uemura, who joined Nintendo as an engineer from Sharp in 1972 at a time when it was tentatively exploring the possibilities of electronic entertainment. One of his first roles was to help with Nintendo's range of location-based light-gun games.

Guide: Best Nintendo Switch Soulslike Games - Games To Play If You Like Dark Souls

Posted: 08 Dec 2021 01:00 PM PST

Git gud games.

When Dark Souls launched back in 2011, it ushered in a new era of lore-filled and inscrutable combat-focused games that gave players the freedom to follow their own path and play style, but steadfastly refused to 'go easy' on them. Every encounter in FromSoftware's series, no matter how minor, has the potential to end in tears; if you blunder in mindlessly mashing buttons, you will be punished.

What defines a 'Soulslike', though? It's not just difficulty, although that's a part of it. Games that exhibit Dark Souls-style elements demand concentration and intent if you want to overcome the challenges they present. They can be 3D or 2D (side-on or top-down), but they typically include exacting combat against unforgiving enemies, large boss fights, the loss of reclaimable 'essence' or similar currency on death, and the freedom to explore different areas of the map, with your skill often being the only gate to progress down a specific path. Bonfires — or equivalent 'safe' zones that offer respite and restoration — are another key part of the Souls experience; that tension of risk vs. reward while inching through an enemy-filled environment on just a sliver of health, desperately hoping to find a bonfire around the next corner.
