Activision Blizzard staff will walkout in protest on Wednesday

Posted: 27 Jul 2021 02:54 PM PDT

In a statement released today, Activison Blizzard employees announced plans to stop work from 10am to 2pm on Wednesday in protest against working conditions at the company. The announcement comes after the State Of California filed a lawsuit against Activision Blizzard for alleged harassment and discrimination within the workplace, and after an open letter signed by over 2600 employees was released yesterday which condemned the "abhorrent" corporate response to the allegations.

Today's walkout announcement includes a list of demands that the employees feel would "improve conditions for employees at the company, especially women, and in particular women of color and transgender women, nonbinary people, and other marginalized groups."

HighFleet's atmospheric strategy is finally out

Posted: 27 Jul 2021 01:28 PM PDT

I mean, who would trust Sin, honestly? I choose to half trust her. In our HighFleet review, she wrote that there was a brilliant game buried underneath its frustrations, and as RPS's chunky button hype man, I'm choosing to believe the "brilliant" bit only.

Anyway, HighFleet is out today. Pick a side.

The AMD Ryzen 5 5600X is now $270 in the US, a historic low

Posted: 27 Jul 2021 01:21 PM PDT

Good news, everyone! The Ryzen 5 5600X continues its march to lower prices, with the CPU now available from antonline via Ebay for $269.99. That's $10 cheaper than it was just last month and, critically, about the same price as the Intel Core i5 11400F. The Intel CPU debuted at a much lower price, but low supplies and positive reviews have inflated the price substantially, to the point where the more powerful 5600X is now the better value pick!

Razer's compact BlackWidow V3 TKL mechanical keyboard is £55 at Currys right now

Posted: 27 Jul 2021 12:52 PM PDT

The Razer BlackWidow V3 TKL is a great compact mechanical keyboard from a major brand, so I'd normally expect to see it selling for £80 to £100 - so when I saw that it was discounted to £55 at Currys PC World, I was shocked to say the least. Thankfully, my spit take didn't destroy my own keyboard, so I can tell you exactly why I reckon this is a Deal Worth Knowing About.

The Weekspot podcast #048: necromorph code

Posted: 27 Jul 2021 10:49 AM PDT

Everyone knew it was coming, dulling the surprise somewhat, but it’s still pretty cool to get confirmation of a Dead Space remake. Well, we've decided that it’ll be good if EA takes a page out of Capcom’s book and goes the Resi route with its Isaac Clarke revival.

Tribes Of Midgard could be great, if it gets out of its own way

Posted: 27 Jul 2021 09:30 AM PDT

Tribes Of Midgard is a part-survival, part-slashy-attacky, part oh my goodness that frost giant is huge online adventure, for up to 10 Viking pals. It has elements of games like Valheim, Diablo, even a splash of Hades. You all pile into a unique world together, and try to survive waves of baddies attacking your town base, as an even bigger, badder giant stomps towards you over the course of several nights.

Accustomed as we are to yelling at each other and hitting trees, several of the RPS treehouse undertook the task of halting Ragnorok, and found ourselves unequal to it. There's a lot to enjoy in Tribes Of Midgard, but unfortunately most of it is obscured by an unbalanced economy that stymies progress into the fun stuff. Also, you will be naked for longer than you imagine.

The joy of The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles' looping animations

Posted: 27 Jul 2021 09:26 AM PDT

Shine those shoes, straighten that tie and ready those objections, fellow legal eagles, because today's the day The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles arrives on PC. It's been a long time coming for Phoenix Wright fans. Set in Victorian times long before the birth of Capcom's famous finger-wagging defence attorney, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles finally makes its way west after first appearing as a Japanese-only Nintendo 3DS game six whole years ago. I had loads of great things to say about it in my Great Ace Attorney Chronicles review yesterday, but one thing I didn't really get round to talking about was its sumptuous character animations. So I went and made a bunch of GIFs to show you some of them in action, and man alive, I could watch these all damn day.

Forza Horizon 5’s big tech trick will be the game’s massive, ever-changing map. At 1.5x the size of Forza Horizon 4’s landmass, it can afford to have some variety in its world. So while you’re racing through the Mexican landscape, developers PlayGround Games have confirmed you’ll be driving through 11 different biomes, and each will have seasonal weather events to bring more variety to the outrageous looking racer.

The Forgotten City review: a lean mystery that builds Rome in a day

Posted: 27 Jul 2021 07:00 AM PDT

Picture the scene: you wake up at the side of a river and a stranger, who is reluctant to tell you their name, is like, "Can you go into the ruined city and find my mate please?" Five minutes later and you find yourself stuck in a time loop in a small Ancient Roman settlement from 2000 years ago. It's not just you who's trapped, either. There are several people stuck in this underground city that you fell into, and you're all under the threat of turning into gold statues if even one of you does something wrong. This is the situation in The Forgotten City, a time loop mystery adventure that does not, unfortunately, feature a dialogue option for constantly swearing and weeping as a reaction to the situation. 0/10 for realism.

High scores for everything else though. I didn't play the immensely popular Skyrim mod that later inspired this standalone, which probably helps one to enjoy The Forgotten City more. But it does stand alone very well. Not a pudgy toddler hanging onto the Dragonborn's ankles, this; no, it is a sturdy Roman legionary, lean and muscular.

Chernobylite review: hardly horror, but still a strong survival roguelite

Posted: 27 Jul 2021 07:00 AM PDT

After reading Matt Cox's (RPS in peace) early access review of Chernobylite, I was less scared about the mutant nasties I'd be facing in this horror-y survival RPG and more concerned with how janky it might be. Had the devs over at The Farm 51 smoothed things out for the game's final release? Well, I can safely say that they've polished up the game into quite the pleasant surprise. There's a compelling mystery here that you'll unravel through a mix of base-building, team management, and stealthy survival, and it all fits together to form a roguelite loop that'll actually have you itching to venture back out into radiation-town.

The Coalition's Unreal Engine 5 demo makes me hungry for Gears Of War 6

Posted: 27 Jul 2021 05:42 AM PDT

Whatever Gears of War 6 will be called, (6EARS is my vote, so we can call it Six Ears), it’ll certainly have graphics. Developers The Coalition (who are named after the ‘Coalition of Ordered Governments’ in the Gears of War universe) have released a couple of new tech demos showing off their work in Unreal Engine 5 for GDC 2021, which showed a familiar theme of ancient ruins, shiny tech, and beards of war.

Apex Legends decimates yet another map next season

Posted: 27 Jul 2021 04:15 AM PDT

Another season, another Apex Legends map getting an explosive facelift. Alright, so this time it doesn't involve actual human-made explosives - World's Edge's volcanic ground has simply had enough of being mined, so it's erupted leaving more lava fissures breaking through the map. We'll be able to explore the new terrain when the next season, Emergence, kicks off on August 3rd. Also, there's a new gun, the new character Seer, and (moving!!) gondolas.

Activision Blizzard staff sign letter condemning company's "abhorrent" response to abuse allegations

Posted: 27 Jul 2021 03:37 AM PDT

Over 1000 current and former Activision Blizzard employees have signed a letter rebuking the company's response to serious allegations of harassment and abuse. Last week, it came to light that the California Department of Fair Housing and Employment (DFEH) were suing Activision Blizzard over an alleged culture of sexual harrassment and discrimination. At the time, the company issued a statement claiming the suit included information that was "distorted, and in many cases false". But now staff past and present are calling for new official statements "that recognise the seriousness of these allegations and demonstrate compassion for victims of harassment and assault".

Steam Deck could finally make gyro aiming a thing of the masses

Posted: 27 Jul 2021 03:37 AM PDT

Though Valve’s Steam Deck is emblazoned with every control you’ve ever seen (buttons, d-pads, joysticks, trackpads, back-buttons, and touchscreen) there’s one you can’t see: gyro. The John Cena of controls allows the Deck to move your viewpoint in game by physically moving the machine around. Valve showed off how it works a little, and it looks very precise.
