Pokémon GO’s Fifth Anniversary Is Today, And Here's What's Planned In-Game

Posted: 06 Jul 2021 01:30 AM PDT

Flying Pikachu are involved.

Can you believe Pokémon GO is now five years old? When the smartphone title launched back in 2016, big things were expected, but it's fair to say that it has outstripped even the most optimistic of predictions and has become both a critical and commercial hit for The Pokémon Company, developer Niantic and, of course, co-owner Nintendo.

As you might expect, the team behind Pokémon GO isn't allowing this momentous event to pass by without fanfare, and there's a celebration going on in-game as we speak.

It only took twenty years, but finally, Phoenix Wright (ace attorney) is getting his own Nendoroid figure. Charity Speedrunning Marathon 'Games Done Quick' Is Back For The Summer

Posted: 05 Jul 2021 10:30 AM PDT

Proceeds will go to Doctors Without Borders.

Imagine going back in time, to an eight-year-old version of yourself who can't beat that last boss in the Zelda/Metroid/Mario game you got for Christmas, and nonchalantly telling that frustrated pre-teen that, one day, someone would be able to beat the entire game in under 15 minutes. Presumably, then you would step back into the timestream, cackling evilly as the child cries. Wouldn't that be fun?

Anyway, all that is to say that speedrunning — the act of completing a game as fast as humanly possible — is one of the greatest feats of civilisation to date, and Games Done Quick, the week-long charity fundraising marathon, is back with Summer Games Done Quick.

Feature: 30 Hours Into The Game With A Higher Metascore Than Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

The House In Fata Morgana Game Diary, Part 3.

Writer's note: I will not discuss specific spoilers in this piece, because anyone who plays The House In Fata Morgana for as long as it takes to get to the twists deserves to have them preserved — but I will discuss the motifs that weave through the game, so be warned if you want to go into the game completely blind. Also, the images might be considered spoilery, too, though I endeavoured to keep away from the BIG twists.

Also, please be aware that this isn't a review — it's an ongoing diary of the game ahead of a review, so we can truly deep-dive into the themes of a game that earned so many 10/10 reviews that it had a perfect score of 100 on Metacritic for a time.

Posted: 05 Jul 2021 08:00 AM PDT

There's lore, but just shoot everything.

The shoot 'em up genre is alive and well, with a mix of retro remasters / re-releases, long overdue sequels and Indie efforts continuing to grace the Switch eShop. Another on the way soon is Risk System, developed by Newt Industries and ported / published for Switch by Hidden Trap, which lands on 15th July priced at $9.99/£8,99/€9.99.

It's been out on platforms like PC and Xbox previously, and it's a title with a decent amount of lore to delve into - advanced technologies, energy parasites, a quest to avoid apocalypse. Of course, if you like, you can just shoot everything.

Soapbox: It's The Summer Of Visual Novels On Switch, And It's Just The Beginning

Posted: 05 Jul 2021 06:00 AM PDT

I should probably learn to read.

Visual novels. Are they games, or are they slideshows?

Well, let's get one thing straight, because this is a soapbox: I personally don't particularly care. I enjoy an evening curled up with a good book, and likewise, I enjoy an evening curled up with a good visual novel on auto-play, occasionally unfurling my hand from the mountain of blankets and biscuit crumbs to make a choice.

Grab The Master Sword Early With This Incredibly Easy Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Glitch

Posted: 05 Jul 2021 05:15 AM PDT

Campfire + Mash 'A' = Voilà.

When it comes to Zelda weaponry, the old 'uns are generally the best 'uns in our book. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild might give you a wealth of cool swords and spears and glowing Guardian blades to experiment with, but once you get your mitts on the Master Sword — the series' sacred blade — it can be hard to go back to using anything else.

Pulling the Blade of Evil's Bane from its stone in the forest isn't simply a case of giving it a firm yank — you'll need have collected a not-inconsiderable 13 hearts before you have the strength to wield it. Well, that was the case, although a newly discovered glitch lets you collect the sword regardless of how much many hearts you've got.

Rumour: Please Let This Super Monkey Ball amiibo Be Real

Posted: 05 Jul 2021 02:30 AM PDT

We'd literally go bananas.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania might be getting its own AiAi amiibo, if a new leak is to be believed.

The fact that it's a third-party amiibo isn't the sticking point here – we've already seen the likes of Dark Souls, Monster Hunter and Shovel Knight get immortalised in NFC-ready plastic figures – it's more that the source of this particular rumour is 4chan, which is almost always enough to get alarm bells ringing.
