Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (August 14th) Posted: 14 Aug 2021 02:00 AM PDT Go on, tell us... Another week of that Nintendo life has passed, and there were certainly some highlights. There were all sorts of gems in the Indie World showcase, a blabbing comedian may have given up a Mario movie character, while on the rumour front we have the likes of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and Grand Theft Auto Trilogy Remastered supposedly on the way. Oh, and there's a Pokémon Presents on the way. Phew! After a busy week it's time to chill out and discuss our weekend gaming plans. A few members of the Nintendo Life team have done just that below, so feel free to give our entries a read and then join in with your own via our comment section. Enjoy! The Pokémon Company Has Opened A TikTok Account In Japan Posted: 13 Aug 2021 10:00 PM PDT Get ready for dancing Pikachu. This LEGO Ideas Project Would Be A Great Way To Return To Wii Sports Resort Posted: 13 Aug 2021 06:00 PM PDT We really miss Wuhu Island. Lego has already said it wants to create more Nintendo-themed sets in the future - so what could be next? While The Legend of Zelda might seem like an obvious pick, how about one based on Wuhu Island from Wii Sports Resort instead? That sounds pretty relaxing, actually. Video: 'The Frog For Whom The Bell Tolls', Link’s Awakening’s Hidden Predecessor Posted: 13 Aug 2021 11:00 AM PDT Ribbit Ribbit. Many of us know the story of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening's development: once A Link to the Past went gold, programmer Tōru Ōsawa began experimenting with Game Boy development kits to see how far he could push a Zelda experience. The results were so impressive that more staff started contributing to this unofficial passion project and eventually it got the thumbs up from Nintendo top brass to enter full production. But one important element is often left out of this tale, the foundation of Link's Awakening wasn't built from scratch. The team used the skeleton of a recent Game Boy release developed by R&D1; Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru — translated as The Frog for Whom the Bell Tolls. Read the full article on nintendolife.com |
The Latest PAW Patrol Game Is Out On Switch Today, Here's The Launch Trailer Posted: 13 Aug 2021 10:30 AM PDT PAW Patrol The Movie: Adventure City Calls. Today sees the release of the latest Paw Patrol video game from Outright Games, and there's even a launch trailer to prove it. Called PAW Patrol The Movie: Adventure City Calls, and definitely not a movie like that title might suggest, the game is a 3D platform adventure that lets players take on the role of their favourite pups like Chase, Skye, Marshall, and Liberty. Players need to use their unique abilities and "next-level" gadgets to explore locations inspired by PAW Patrol: The Movie. Ah, so that's where the name comes from. Random: This Absolute Unit Of A Game Boy Advance Was Made By The Creator Of 'Long Game Boy' Posted: 13 Aug 2021 09:30 AM PDT Game Boy? No. This is a Game MAN. When the Game Boy Advance came out in 2001, widescreen 16:9 TVs were still very new. Many of us still clung to our chunky television squares until the late 2000s, because change is scary and new electronics are expensive. So it wasn't really a surprise that the GBA's screen had a lovely, nearly-square 3:2 aspect ratio, following up the Game Boy and Game Boy Color's 10:9. Squares make us feel safe. But this is 2021, and we like things W I D E now. So what better DIY project than bringing the GBA up to today's standards by making it BIG? Read the full article on nintendolife.com |
Konami's Castlevania: Grimoire Of Souls Rises From The Dead Posted: 13 Aug 2021 09:20 AM PDT Update: Announced in 2018, resurrected in 2021. Update: Well, that was unexpected. Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls was announced in 2018 (see story below), soft-launched in Canada in 2019 and then delisted, but it's now getting resurrected (pardon the pun) on Apple Arcade (thanks, Gematsu). It has been confirmed for iOS, tvOS, and Mac, and the release date is listed as 'soon'. You can check out the official site here. So, it's still not coming to consoles, but at least some of us will get the chance to play what is, at the time of writing, the last game in the Castlevania series. Crysis Remastered Gets Switch Retail Release Date Posted: 13 Aug 2021 09:15 AM PDT With 20 signed cards 'placed randomly' in day 1 orders. The question of 'can it run Crysis' was resolutely answered on Switch with the eShop release of Crysis Remastered last year; pleasingly we now also have Crysis Remastered Trilogy on the way to the eShop this Fall, including each entry being sold separately if you already have the first. It remains slightly strange, with the trilogy being download only, that we're also getting the first game at retail. Crytek has now confirmed that the cartridge version of that first entry in the trilogy will arrive on 28th September. Each copy will have an art card included, and in a promotion that reminds us of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory there'll be 20 special autographed cards distributed randomly in the day one batch. Nintendo Indie World Infographic Shows Off 19 Games From Around The World Posted: 13 Aug 2021 09:00 AM PDT A global effort. If you somehow missed the broadcast or the various games showcased, you can wrap your eyeballs around some of our coverage below. Read the full article on nintendolife.com |
Hands On: One Man's Vision Shaped The GBA-Style GameForce CHI Posted: 13 Aug 2021 08:30 AM PDT ...but is it any good? If you're familiar with the raft of emulation-focused handhelds that have been emerging from China over the past few years, then the work of Anbernic and Bitt Boy will no doubt be on your radar already. While these are clearly small-fry when compared to the likes of Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft, they're still firms with a fair amount of resources at their disposal. GameForce might, at first glance, seem like a very similar outfit, but it's largely the work of a single person, Gao Feng, a retro gaming enthusiast who has made it his aim to create the perfect emulation-based portable. Nintendo Shares Tips So Parents Can Stop Kids Using Their Credit Cards Posted: 13 Aug 2021 08:00 AM PDT Follow Bowser's example. Summer Holidays for parents mean lots of quality time with their children, and also the challenges of keeping them entertained. It's not all day trips and activities, of course, and Nintendo's Japanese website has published a guide giving tips to parents that may be struggling to manage what their little 'uns are doing on their Switch systems (thanks, Kotaku). Interestingly, it addresses an apparent increase in children using their parent's credit cards and accounts to make purchases. It's tabloid newspaper fodder, of course, headlines of "My Son Spent £10,000 On FIFA" with pictures of frowning parents, but beyond sensationalised articles like that it can be an actual problem. Not all parents are tech savvy, either, so the guide uses very simple terms and step-by-step details to help parents understand the sorts of things kids want to buy (especially microtransactions), control user accounts, and also avoid risk by removing saved card details. Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Was July's Best-Selling Game In The US, Even Discounting Digital Sales Posted: 13 Aug 2021 07:00 AM PDT Flying high. It would appear that The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD had a cracking start to life in the US, becoming the best-selling game in the region in its launch month of July. That's according to new data from Mat Piscatella, executive director and game industry advisor at The NPD Group. It wasn't the busiest month for new releases, but when you consider the fact that Skyward Sword HD only launched on the 16th of the month, and that Nintendo doesn't disclose digital sales to be included in these round-ups, it's a pretty strong achievement: Read the full article on nintendolife.com |

Switch Takes Japan's Entire Top 30 Software Chart, The First Console To Do So Since 1988 Posted: 13 Aug 2021 05:45 AM PDT "This is unprecedented". If you keep up to date with our regular Japanese chart updates, you'll have spotted that Nintendo Switch games made up the entire top ten last week. That's actually a pretty common occurrence these days, but it turns out that last week's performance was even better than we could have imagined. Japanese physical chart data, published by Famitsu, comes in two waves – on a Thursday, we get to see the top ten, and then a full top 30 list gets published the following day. That top 30 list is now in, and Nintendo Switch has taken the entire lot (thanks, Gematsu): Read the full article on nintendolife.com |
Review: Greak: Memories of Azur - A Gorgeous Platformer Crying Out For Co-op Posted: 13 Aug 2021 05:00 AM PDT The tri-force. The Switch is no stranger to quirky 2D platformers at this point. With so many quality titles to choose from, it can be tough for newcomers to stand out from the crowd. Greak: Memories of Azur is a solid 2D adventure game that, visually at least, can stand proud amongst some of the best examples of the genre, but with few original ideas to call its own, it's most definitely at risk of being lost in a sea of excellent indie titles. Taking place within the land of Azur, you take on the role of three siblings from a race known as the Courines, who are locked in a raging battle with a rival race, the Urlags. The siblings have been split from one another, and it's up to you to reunite them. Starting the game as Greak, it won't be too long until you locate Adara and Raydel, and from there you can switch between the characters at will, using their unique abilities to solve puzzles and progress further into an increasingly hostile land.
