Feature: Psychologists Talk Animal Crossing: New Horizons 2.0 And Keeping Fun Ahead Of FOMO

Posted: 27 Nov 2021 08:00 AM PST

Keep the "happy" in Happy Home Paradise.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons was supposed to be just a game. Through a series of weird coincidences, it instead became a cultural phenomenon, and a record of the first few months of a global pandemic. It's not surprising that a lot of us have complicated feelings about it.

Granted, a lot of those feelings are positive ones, because Animal Crossing was a lifeline when many of us were really struggling — an oasis in a massive desert of difficulties. But for many of us, those positive feelings also came with a massive dose of FOMO (fear of missing out) when we compared ourselves to other people playing the game, and worries that we were somehow wasting time or playing the game "wrong" by either bingeing it, or not playing "enough" to keep up.

Zelda 64's Game Code Has Been Successfully Reverse-Engineered, Making Mods And Ports Possible

Posted: 27 Nov 2021 07:00 AM PST

It's also great news for video game preservation.

A fan group known as 'Zelda Reverse Engineering Team' has reportedly been able to successfully reverse-engineer "100%" of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time code. Essentially what it does is "open the doors" to mods, hacks, and even ports of the Nintendo 64 classic.

While there's the possibility of this in the future, the same group stresses its own decompilation is "not a port" and mentions how it won't be involved in any work to adapt the game's code to new platforms. The group is also planning to decompile other builds of the game, like the Master Quest Debug version.

Review: Toaplan Arcade Garage - Two Historic Shmups Archived By Arcade Port Masters M2

Posted: 27 Nov 2021 06:00 AM PST

Easy, tiger.

In recent years fans of the 2D shooter form have had to adjust their expectation of what a port can be, largely thanks to the sublime M2 ShotTriggers series. Indeed, we've been rather spoiled by that particular run of games.

A long-established convention across gaming's history states that console ports never quite meet the quality bar set by arcade originals. That notion doesn't appear to have deterred the longstanding Tokyo software house M2, however. Their ShotTriggers series has delivered a bounty of ports of iconic shmups that are often so good it can be tempting to posit that they trump the originals.

Travel back to 2006.

If you played the Wii back in the day, at some point you likely tried out the included launch title Wii Sports. It was a mix of sports that demonstrated the capabilities of the system's Wii Remote and motion controls at the time.

Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (November 27th)

Posted: 27 Nov 2021 02:00 AM PST

Playing some freshly acquired bargains?

It's the end of another week, and there've been plenty of quirky developments and storylines in the world of Nintendo. GTA Trilogy stayed in the headlines to an extent and had its first notable update, sequence breakers struck again in Metroid Dread, Mario Golf: Super Rush had a big update, Xbox acknowledged that time it tried to buy Nintendo, Keanu Reeves doesn't want to be in Mortal Kombat, and a bot reading and creating Nintendo news was oddly hilarious. All told a lighter week in tone, with plenty celebrating Thanksgiving and shopping for bargains.

Now, though, it's time to chill out and discuss our weekend gaming plans. A few members of the Nintendo Life team have done just that below, so feel free to give our entries a read and then join in with your own via our comment section. Enjoy!

Former Metroid Prime Engineer Admits He Was "Disappointed" With The Wii's Specs

Posted: 26 Nov 2021 07:30 PM PST

Remaining with Nintendo would have meant staying "a bit behind".

The Nintendo Wii is arguably one of the most innovative video game consoles ever released, but when it comes to raw power - at the time, it was well behind the competition. This led to some third-party developers completely skipping the generation, and even certain Nintendo teams were forced to rethink their approach to next-generation games after being caught off guard by the hardware's technical limitations.

In an interview with podcaster Reece Reilly – AKA: Kiwi Talkz, the former Metroid Prime technical lead engineer, Jack Matthews (who worked on the first three Prime games) admitted part of the reason he moved on from the studio was not just fatigue, but also because of Nintendo's underpowered "next-generation" hardware. For Matthews, remaining with Nintendo at Retro Studios would have meant "staying a bit in a box" and "a bit behind" the times.

(next year, that is).

VHS tapes! SNES controllers! Affordable homes! Yes, the '90s were a great time, but they are dead. Long dead. We can relive them through video games, though.
