Exploring Nintendo's Metroid Dread | Video Gameography Posted: 11 Dec 2021 07:00 AM PST The first season of Game Informer's Video Gameography has explored the history of the Metroid series, but it's time to wrap the season by talking about, arguably, the biggest Nintendo game of the year: Metroid Dread. On October 8, 2021, Metroid Dread was released for Nintendo's Switch. Nintendo heralded the title as the end of an era for the series, but considering how well it's selling, it could also be the beginning of another golden age. Oddly, Dread might have one of the longest teases in history, as its name first appeared back in 2005. In this week's show, we talk about our problems with the game's controls, what we thought of the difficulty, and what its big narrative reveal means for Samus' future. Join hosts Ben Reeves (@BenjaminReeves), Marcus Stewart (@MarcusStewart7), and special guest, soon-to-be-GameSpot-editor Jessica Howard (@awildjessichu) for the next hour as we explore Metroid Dread's lore, development history, and lasting impact. If you'd like to get in touch with the Video Gameography podcast, you can email us at podcast@gameinformer.com. You can also join our official Game Informer Discord server by linking your Discord account to your Twitch account and subscribing to the Game Informer Twitch channel. Sniper Elite 5 Brings X-Ray Brutality Back To WWII Posted: 10 Dec 2021 03:30 PM PST Rebellion has announced Sniper Elite 5 will be coming next year, bringing the series to France while staying within the timeframe of World War II. In it, you play as super sniper Karl Fairburne, who is on a mission to take out high-ranking officers and find out the secret to something called Project Kraken. Click here to watch embedded mediaKarl's adventures through the French cities and countrysides won't be pleasant, and he'll have to rely on more than his sharpshooting skills to stay alive. The debut trailer shows plenty of weaponry at Fairburne's disposal, like automatic firearms, rocket launchers, and good old-fashioned knives. Returning is the gruesome x-ray effect on devastating neck stabs or pinpoint accurate sniper shots that cause the target's internals to explode spectacularly. Last night, keen-eyed viewers of The Game Awards might have spotted Sniper Elite 5 on the list of upcoming day one Game Pass releases. The game is set to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC sometime in 2022. Are you a fan of Sniper Elite? Which is your favorite installment in the series? Let us know in the comments!

Scorn Breaks Its Silence With October 2022 Launch Window Posted: 10 Dec 2021 02:47 PM PST Scorn was one of the first games announced for the Xbox Series X/S, but we still don't know a ton about it, and it vanished from the limelight for over a year. Developer Ebb Software has finally spoken up to remind us that Scorn is still very much happening – in fact, it's arriving next October. A cryptic trailer revealed the release window but didn't divulge any new plot or gameplay details. A new community post on the game's Kickstarter page only offers a behind-the-scenes look at the game's art direction. Click here to watch embedded mediaEbb CEO Ljubomi Peklar issued a statement on the game, saying: "We're really pleased to be able to share more news on the game and its release date. Scorn has been a real work of passion for the entire studio. The atmosphere, the journey, and the experience, we want every moment in Scorn to elicit an emotional response and feeling. It is our hope that Scorn stays with players long after they reach its ending. We're looking forward to sharing more news and updates with our community as we move closer to launch" So far, we know that Scorn is a first-person shooter set within a labyrinthine world heavily inspired by the art of H.R. Giger. The pulsating walls and grotesque enemies send the appropriate shivers up our spines, and we're glad to see the project still has a pulse. The last time we saw Scorn in action was in a 14-minute gameplay demo that you can watch here. Scorn is launching to Xbox Series X/S and PC.

The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience | New Gameplay Today Posted: 10 Dec 2021 02:22 PM PST ![]() Among the numerous announcements to come out of The Game Awards, The Matrix Awakens was one of the coolest as well as the most puzzling. Not quite a game, per see, this free interactive experience serves as a tech demo to showcase Unreal Engine 5's horsepower using The Matrix universe as a backdrop. To say that it looks great is an understatement. We're still trying to lift our jaws off the floor thanks to the life-like fidelity of Awakens' city. Awakens puts you in control of an original character, though you do get to hang with Neo and Trinity during an exciting on-rails car chase/shooting gallery that we'll partially show off. You'll also get a glimpse at how Awakens lets players tinker with development tools to alter the look and feel of its world. Join Alex Stadink, Marcus Stewart, and Andrew Reiner as they delve into The Matrix Awakens' stunning digital playground. Be sure to check out our round-up of all the big announcements from The Game Awards, as well as the full list of award winners.

SPONSORED: Battle Your Friends With These Four Awesome Roblox-Inspired Nerf Blasters Posted: 10 Dec 2021 01:30 PM PST ![]() ![]() Roblox is a virtual world-building platform that stimulates the imaginations of millions of kids and adults alike all over the world. Never before has it been so easy to jump into thousands of fun and unique games with friends all while using the same avatar across experiences. And for the most ambitious players, you can even download Roblox Studio and make your own games to share with friends or the entire world. And the best part about Roblox is that it's entirely free across PC, mobile, and Xbox so there's nothing stopping you from hopping on to play some games. Honestly, the metaverse has already arrived and its denizens have blocks for heads. Any parent of a kid aged 15 or younger undoubtedly is familiar with the digital frontier of Roblox. Naturally, it makes sense for the folks behind one of the world's most popular video games to team up with the folks behind one of the world's most popular toy brands. When you're done bringing your ideas to life virtually in Roblox, you can actually hold and use real Nerf guns based on the Roblox worlds you already know and love. For this line, Hasbro created unique blasters based on iconic Roblox games. ![]() Nerf Roblox MM2: Shark Seeker Blaster Some players are marked as "Innocents" who must hide and survive for the duration of the game while one other person is marked as the "Sheriff" and can take down the Murderer before any Innocents are taken out. It's a clever game that involves lots of trickery. The Shark Seeker Blaster is an awesome toy thanks to the stylish and original design. You can mash down on the fin placed on top to prime the blaster after loading a dart in the chamber and feel the satisfying click as you fire off shots. Each blaster comes with three Nerf Mega darts so you should have enough ammo to hold your friends at bay and keep them on their toes before needing to reload. ![]() Nerf Roblox Adopt Me!: Bees! Blaster The blaster based on this game is stylized to look like it was just dipped into an oozing beehive that's dripping with honey. The orange honey mold across the top is drenched in an aesthetic that really elevates this Nerf blaster's style. If the visual attention to detail wasn't enough to sell you, the Bees! Blaster is primed for battle for anyone looking to unload some serious firepower. With an 8-dart rotation drum, you can fire off enough darts to take down a whole squad of your friends without ever needing to stop and reload. You just have to move the lever before each shot to rotate the drum and prepare the next shot. ![]() Nerf Roblox Arsenal Pulse Laser Motorized Blaster A lot of Roblox games are based on roleplaying or simulations, but Arsenal is just a straight up frag fest that hearken back to the glory days of classic first-person shooters on PC. It's fast, frenetic, and fun gameplay minus all the blood and violence. In fact, it's a bit like a virtual Nerf blaster fight without the need to clean up all the darts afterward. That's a win-win scenario! The Pulse Laser Motorized Blaster steps things up a notch by including a removable 10-dart clip that loads into the bottom of the blaster. With its motorized action, you'll need to supply your own set of four AA batteries to get the full effect. The rapid dart feeding system means you can shoot off all 10-darts in rapid succession before you ever need to reload. ![]() Nerf Roblox Jailbreak: Armory Blaster Set In Jailbreak, players can be either cops or criminals in an attempt to stop robberies or orchestrate heists depending on the role you're assigned. The developers have continually worked on the game for nearly five years to add new content, update existing parts of the game, and keep things as fresh as possible. Unlike the other blasters on this list, the Armory Blaster Set is actually two one-handed blasters in one tidy package. These blasters have a single chamber to load individual darts one-at-a-time and are primed with a hammer-action lever at the back before each shot. Just load a dart, pull down the priming hammer, and pull the trigger. The Armory Set includes two blasters and 10 Official Nerf Elite darts so you've got plenty of ammo to work with. Or, you can share with a friend, split the darts, and re-create a match of Jailbreak in your backyard. --- Regardless of what type of action you're looking for, whether it be handheld single-shot blasters or automatic motorized guns with loads of darts, the new line of Roblox-themed Nerf blasters has you covered. And as a neat bonus, you even get a special redemption code that can be used to acquire an in-game item inside Roblox included with each of the blasters mentioned here! Now load up your blasters with Nerf darts, take aim, take cover, and have some fun! Note: All Nerf blasters and darts are tested and approved for performance, safety, and quality. All toys shown here may be used either indoors or outdoors for children age 8 and up. To avoid eye injury do not aim at faces and protective eyewear is recommended (not included.) Small parts may present a choking hazard, so please keep out of reach at all times for children under 3 years.

Sony To Acquire Developer Valkyrie Entertainment Posted: 10 Dec 2021 12:25 PM PST Sony's first-party efforts grew stronger today with the acquisition of Seattle-based developer, Valkyrie Entertainment. Since 2002, Valkyrie has worked on over 100 games, often serving the role of co-developer or content creator. In a tweet, Hermen Hulst, the head of PlayStation Studios, said Valkyrie "will be making invaluable contributions to key PlayStation Studios franchises." Valkyrie has worked with Sony several times in the past, helping bring Infamous, God of War, and Twisted Metal to market. The developer will once again be working with Sony Santa Monica on God of War: Ragnarok. In a press release issued earlier today, a Sony spokesperson outlined the path forward. "The day-to-day operations post-acquisition will continue to be run by Valkyrie Entertainment's current management team. Terms of this transaction including the acquisition cost are not disclosed due to contractual commitments." Along with the acquisition, Valkyrie has a big reason to celebrate, as it was one of the studios involved in helping create Halo Infinite, the fantastic sequel that we awarded a review of 9.25 out of 10. Other games that have Valkyrie's touch are pictured in the image above. Sony and Microsoft are in a bit of an arms race, snatching up developers over the last few years to broaden their respective first-party game development efforts.

Hisuian Voltorb Still Looks Like A Pokéball Somehow Posted: 10 Dec 2021 11:54 AM PST Another regional form for Pokémon Legends: Arceus has been announced, and this time it's a new version of Voltorb. ![]() Typically a pure electric type, the Hisuian Voltorb is grass and electric, joining Rotom Mow as the only two Pokémon that share the two elements. Like its gen-1 predecessor, Hisuian Voltorb still resembles a Pokéball, only now, instead of looking metallic and grumpy, this sphere has angular, joyful eyes and wood grain throughout its lower half. The design is somewhat closer to the Pokéballs you'll find or craft while playing Legends: Arceus. It has a mysterious opening on the top of its head, which the Pokémon website says spouts seeds, though "it's impossible to see anything even if one peers into the hole." When this Voltorb gets excited or feels like it's in danger, that same hole is the source of discharged electricity. Click here to watch embedded mediaAlong with the announcement of Hisuian Voltorb, The Pokémon Company has released an adorable stop-motion animated short featuring the two-toned orb cheerfully irritating a Pikachu, Spheal, and Buneary. The video ends with a "to be continued," so hopefully, we'll learn more about Voltorb or its potential Hisuian Electrode evolution in the next one. With so many types of Pokéballs out there, with various designs and colors, I'd love to see a bunch of variations of Voltorb to match the look of a Quick Ball or a Nest Ball. Pokémon Legends: Arceus is a semi-open world adventure where players step back in time to explore the Hisui region, which we now know as Sinnoh from Diamond and Pearl. Trainers take a more active role in battle and catching wild Pokémon, bringing the concept of the franchise a little further from its purely turn-based roots. Pokémon Legends: Arceus launches for Nintendo Switch on January 28, 2022.

The Wreck Is An Emotional 3D Visual Novel By The Makers Of Bury Me, My Love Posted: 10 Dec 2021 10:53 AM PST 2019's Bury Me, My Love offered one of the most uniquely told narratives in recent memory (not to mention being quite emotional). We've been curious as to what developer The Pixel Hunt had up its sleeve next, and we found out yesterday with the reveal of its next project, The Wreck. The Wreck is billed as a mature 3D visual novel. It stars a failed screenwriter named Junon who must relive one of the most important and, if the trailer is any indication, traumatizing days of her life. The Pixel Hunt describes the story as a tale about "sisterhood, motherhood, grief, and survival." Click here to watch embedded mediaIn terms of gameplay, you'll converse with a small cast of characters to explore Junon's past in a non-linear story. With Junon dealing with emotional stress and her mother in critical condition, revisiting and coming to terms with a challenging past and present sounds easier said than done. Though the trailer establishes the tone, the gallery of screenshots below provides a better idea of how moment-to-moment gameplay appears and the game's dream-like quality. The Wreck is currently slated to launch to PC via Steam in 2022.

Banjo-Kazooie Joins Switch Online Expansion Pack Next Month Posted: 10 Dec 2021 10:15 AM PST The Nintendo 64 library of the Switch Online Expansion Pack gets a dose of Rare next month when Banjo-Kazooie joins the service. The game joins the service sometime in January, but there's no exact date as of yet. The 1998 platformer is widely remembered as a standout game for the N64 (especially for third-party games) and among the most beloved games of the era overall. While the emulation of the Expansion Pack hasn't been universally loved, it's cool to see Banjo-Kazooie making its way back to the house of N. Given that Microsoft owns Rare, the only way to play Banjo was on Xbox, such as in the Rare Replay collection.
As a reminder, Paper Mario joins the Expansion Pack library today.

It Takes Two Review – The Joys And Heartbreak Of Love Posted: 10 Dec 2021 09:35 AM PST Publisher: EA Originals Developer: Hazelight Release: Reviewed on: Xbox Series X/S Also on: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC Beneath exhilarating rollercoaster rides and silly conversations with squirrels, It Takes Two has a heavy heart. It's about divorce and the toll taken on a daughter who doesn't want to lose her family. It's about decaying love and the differences that divide us. It's about not wanting to face reality and not wanting to let go. It's also about hope and uncertainty, the past creating a better future, and finding common ground no matter how much it may hurt. All of these elements are beautifully woven into a colorful and soulful adventure that hits hard, both in its moving narrative and clever gameplay. It Takes Two succeeds in being a game that pushes two individuals to work together to create a relationship that works, but for how long? In an emotional opening shot, we see a little girl named Rose run off to her play space after her parents, Cody and May, tell her that they are separating. She's devastated and keeps saying she just wants them to be "friends." As hard as it is for Rose to accept the news, we learn she's been expecting it. Not only has she made two action figures of her parents to play make-believe with – to show them the way she wants them to be – she's also secretly purchased a "Book of Love" to learn how to make them care about each other again. ![]() Rose's tears fall from her cheeks onto the figures and book, conjuring magical forces that sweep through the house. When we next see Cody and May, their souls have been passed to their miniature, wooden and clay counterparts. As these two adults rightfully panic in their new bodies, the Book of Love greets them as an upbeat, comical figure named Dr. Hakim, who promises to help them mend the bond they once shared. The entire adventure is told from this diminutive perspective and delivers a nicely written story that unfolds amid treacherous action sequences. The blending of narration and gameplay works incredibly well, giving you plenty of insight into the minds of Cody and May as they leap about and race to find a way to return to their normal lives (and sizes). Dr. Hakim doesn't want them to move so fast, however, and thinks they should stay small to work out their differences. This somewhat nefarious desire of his is brilliantly transformed into the foundation of the adventure. As the name of the game implies, It Takes Two can only be played cooperatively by two people, either sitting on a couch together or online. While each player is asked to complete individual platforming challenges, not much progress can be made unless the duo is working together. Almost every significant movement demands teamwork, communication, and patience between the two players. Even when playing online, the screen is always split in two so you can see exactly what your partner is doing, an excellent touch that allows for the other player to problem solve with verbal guidance. Click image thumbnails to view larger version ![]()
Cody and May share the same basic moves, but are given different tools to use in each world. This makes them feel distinct and sets the stage for one person to always have ownership over a specific type of action. For instance, Cody has explosive gel, but it can only be detonated with May's rifle. Later in the game, Cody can change sizes, while May is equipped with magnetic boots – an odd pairing that is used to let both characters interact in the world in different ways to open up new routes. Combining the actions of both players is used in almost every sequence, which are usually wonderfully designed, delivering plenty of laughs, edge-of-your-seat moments, and a unique flow that necessitates teamwork. A few sequences push both characters to do the same type of action, but with slightly different thinking and motions for each, such as having to spin the water wheels on a boat in different directions to avoid running into mines. This is the type of activity that will have you yelling back and forth as you stumble with what you want the other player to do in conjunction with your movement. While It Takes Two will be talked about for its cooperative-only design and subject matter, developer Hazelight's biggest triumph is the variety in action. When a particular gameplay idea has been explored fully, the action transforms into something new, which is taken for a ride in fun ways before expiring and presenting another idea. It's amazing how many different concepts are explored, almost coming across like a greatest hits of everything you can do in action games. Some of these ideas work better than others, but most of Hazelight's attempts are incredibly well executed, such as riding on the back of a magical catfish, roaring down an icy slope in a bobsled, or using a fidget spinner to launch into the air. Click image thumbnails to view larger version ![]()
The core gameplay of running and jumping is consistent in every world, but the problem-solving elements are always being shaken up. Hazelight even provides a breather from the action from time to time through amusing minigames that allow you to compete against your partner, give them a helping hand, or in some cases, take out your stress on them (like hitting them on the head in a game of whack-a-mole). Constant verbal communication is an absolute must for almost every little sequence, which again gives this game a bit of a unique stance. Many of the challenges will have you saying phrases like "throw the switch…now!" Some of the co-op feats can be brutally difficult both in timing and movement, leading to both players dying plenty, but checkpoints are liberally dispersed. If you miss a jump, you usually start again right at that spot (or just a few gameplay steps back from it). Progress being updated so often helps save the game from its slightly stiff and imprecise platforming mechanics. If both players die, they'll have to restart a boss fight or backtrack to redo a little of the level, but a nicely designed quick self-revive mechanic limits those moments. Click here to watch embedded mediaThe platforming is sophisticated, requiring double jumps and air dashes, along with rope swings and more. None of these actions are completely reliable or as fluid as you want them to be, but are good enough to get the job done. Hazelight is quite aware of just how often timing missteps can be made and aids the player by having characters automatically be pulled to a ledge rather than miss if they are close. It's odd to see Cody or May magically move through space, but it's better than having to try a difficult action again. The helpful warping happens everywhere in the game, whether you are a good five feet under a rail slide and suddenly find yourself on it or are about to miss a jump to a tree branch. It Takes Two may not be the platforming juggernaut that it aspires to be, but it more than makes up for it with its big heart, wealth in variety, and gorgeous imagery. All of its individual actions are things we've done in other games, but when applied to this distinct cooperative approach, they take on a whole new life and are used in wonderful ways over a long adventure. The action will have you laughing and screaming at your TV, and the story stays strong throughout, creating the backbone for an entertaining adventure that roars with excitement and should keep you glued to the controller to see if this couple's lost love can be rekindled. Score: 9.25Summary: Hazelight's cooperative adventure is clever, different, and loads of fun. Concept: An expertly designed cooperative experience that pushes each player to do different things in concert to solve challenges Graphics: The worlds soar with realistic details. It's fun to see how ordinary objects are brought to life to either transform into bosses or NPCs Sound: Your characters often converse as the action unfolds, and the music fits the sequences well, even conjuring up familiar melodies of classics like "Flight of the Valkyries" Playability: Many different gameplay ideas are explored, and none overstay their welcome. The variety is great, but the core platforming mechanics are not as reliable as they should be Entertainment: A roaring success both in its diverse co-op-driven gameplay and mature story themes that unfold in playful and heartfelt ways Replay: Moderately High |
How Deathloop Works: Breaking Down Arkane's Brilliant Game Design Posted: 10 Dec 2021 09:11 AM PST Arkane Studios has built a strong cult following over the last decade. Its expertise is developing immersive sims – games that facilitate unpredictable stories and emergent gameplay through player choice, complex AI, persistent systems, and sandbox level design. Like the best immersive sims, Deathloop encourages you to use its robust suite of tools to poke at its many systems and environments to differing results, which then allows you to piece together the best route through any place. However, unlike its predecessors Dishonored and Prey, Deathloop doesn't have one specific mission, ability, or weapon that stands out as the best part of the adventure. Instead, it showcases how a game's many elements can interact with one another to create a truly unique experience. Specifically, the game's level design and time of day system work together to create a setting that invites exploration and houses adaptive characters to provide consequences to player actions. Add in a consistent ruleset and shared design language that permeates every aspect of Deathloop, and you'll understand why the title is one of the best releases of 2021. There isn't one particular thread greater than the rest. Deathloop is an impressive intersection of stories and gameplay systems woven together to create a tapestry deserving of your attention. In my latest video essay, I break down the game design behind Deathloop in an attempt to better understand one of the best games on PlayStation 5 and my personal favorite game of 2021: Click here to watch embedded mediaIf you enjoyed this video, be sure to watch our other video essays and subscribe to the Game Informer YouTube channel so that you don't miss a future one. Our First Look At Halo The Series Premiered At The Game Awards Posted: 09 Dec 2021 08:44 PM PST Two days removed from the launch of Halo Infinite, we finally have our first look at Halo The Series, the long-awaited Paramount+ adaptation of gaming's favorite Spartan. While there aren't any ring-like space mechanisms the games are named for, the initial peek at Halo The Series gave us plenty to be excited about. It features plenty of Spartans, interstellar asteroid civilizations, and most importantly, Master Chief doing a cool, heroic landing and pose in the sand. Dr. Halsey narrates the piece, likely speaking to John-117 about how she's counting on him to be special and he gives people hope. We get some beautiful shots of human cities, Chief exploring some stony ruins, and what looks to be a brilliantly-lit alien structure. The Covenant is said to play a large role as an antagonist in the series, though we don't catch a glimpse of the coalition of extraterrestrial races quite yet. Click here to watch embedded mediaHalo The Series is produced in coordination with Showtime, Amblin Television, and 343 Industries. It stars Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief/John-117, Natascha McElhone as Dr. Catherine Halsey, Bokeem Woodbine as Soren-066, and Jen Taylor reprising her role as the AI Cortana. The show hits Paramount+ sometime in 2022. What did you think of the first substantive trailer for Halo The Series? Let us know in the comments!

Cooperative Shooter Arc Raiders Makes Its Gameplay Debut Posted: 09 Dec 2021 08:35 PM PST ![]() Arc Raiders is an upcoming free-to-play cooperative shooter by Embark Studios, which is comprised of previous DICE employees who worked on the Battlefield series. Embark took to The Game Awards to unveil its project, Arc Raiders, offering our first big look at the game in action. With Robyn's "Dancing On My Own" serving as the trailer's anthem, we were introduced to deadly mechanized threats coming from space that must be brought down with the cooperation of your squad. Plenty of gunfire and explosions naturally ensue. But then the trailer shows humongous mechanized beings that take up the entire screen, giving the fights a David versus Goliath feel. You are playing as the underdog and must work together with your team to shoot off enemy parts and make sure everyone stays alive. In one cool scene, a character launches toward the giant being and chucks a grenade right at its center. The trailer ends by saying: "They will never stop coming," and shows an armored baddie with red eyes rising. You can watch it for yourself above. The game's description on Steam says players will wield tools and gadgets to outsmart the enemy and use physics to their advantage for success. Arc Raiders is set to come out in 2022 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Today at The Game Awards 2021, we were treated to yet another taste of what's to come. Suppose you're looking for more information on Elden Ring. In that case, you might want to check out an extensive write-up of everything we discovered in hours and hours of wandering around the Network Test – or join us on video for some hot and spicy commentary. Today, players got a little more context about the world that From Software and G.R.R. Martin have created for Elden Ring. Check out the entire trailer below. What do you think this means for Elden Ring? After Bloodborne's mid-game surprise shift, I think everyone's anticipating that there are plenty of exciting secrets in store. Posted: 09 Dec 2021 08:04 PM PST The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal 5 Experience has officially been revealed and it's available to experience on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S right now. Revealed during The Game Awards 2021 by none other than Keanu Reeves, who plays Neo in the Matrix franchise, and Carrie-Anne Moss, who plays Trinity, this experience is a visual showcase of what Unreal Engine 5 is capable of. During The Game Awards 2021, Reeves and Moss were found in front of the iconic dodge-a-bullet-by-bending-really-far-backwards-scene from the first Matrix movie. Click here to watch embedded mediaReeves jokes that he can't pull off moves like that anymore, but he says in Unreal Engine 5, he can. Then, we see some footage from Matrix Resurrections, which oddly enough features footage from The Matrix, too. From there, we returned to Reeves and Moss, who ask, "what is a game and what is a movie?" Following this, the duo revealed the world premiere of The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience and it was quite impressive, if not a touch veering into uncanny valley territory. Click here to watch embedded mediaIt turns out that this experience is playable and seems to take place during a scene in which Neo and Trinity are dodging enemies while racing down a street. We haven't played it yet, but if we had to guess, it plays like a shooter of sorts. It appears to be a tech demo with playable elements. Are you jumping into The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine? Let us know what you think of it in the comments below!

We got a taste of his music as it played over the game's trailer, which shows a character riding atop some kind of robotic horse throughout a desert. As this happens, the character is chased by a group of rocket-powered, spider-like creates. The trailer ends with the character thrown from their horse, as small, cat-like creature paws at them. Dying Light 2 Stay Human Shows Off New Trailer Ahead Of February Release Posted: 09 Dec 2021 07:32 PM PST Techland's Dying Light 2 Stay Human got a new trailer during The Game Awards, showcasing some of the grim realities of the harsh world coming next February. Not only does the trailer serve up an impressive visual showcase, but it also highlights one of the most significant conflicts that can happen in the myriad hypothetical zombie apocalypse scenarios, where humans are at each other's throats as one of the most dangerous threats of all. It's almost like one of the challenges in these survival scenarios is to stay human despite society and the world crumbling into chaos. Oh wait, they put that in the title just in case we forgot. Nice! Anyway, check out this cool trailer that explores some pretty gruesome and grim stuff. Zombies are scary, and tough choices will be made in this game for sure. Click here to watch embedded mediaDying Light 2 Stay Human is scheduled to land on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC on February 4, 2022.

A Plague Tale: Requiem Gameplay Premieres At The Game Awards Posted: 09 Dec 2021 07:31 PM PST A Plague Tale: Requiem, sequel to 2019's A Plague Tale: Innocence, made its unexpected debut during E3 back in June. That moment came by way of a cinematic trailer, but tonight's Game Awards provided a first look at gameplay. To the surprise of no one who played the original, there are rats. Lots and lots of rats. Amicia and Hugo are off on another dark quest and the biggest difference is that Amicia gets her hands a lot dirtier this time around. She's gone from wielding just a slingshot and hiding in the shadows to firing crossbows in what looks to be more involved combat. Of course, the supernatural rat plague remains the star and the swarm look deadlier (and more visually impressive) than ever. Click here to watch embedded mediaA Plague Tale: Requiem launches to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC in 2022. It's also launching day one on Xbox Game Pass.

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League Gameplay Debuts At The Game Awards Posted: 09 Dec 2021 07:23 PM PST ![]() Rocksteady debuted the first gameplay trailer for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League at The Game Awards. In it, we get to see how the unlikely team of villains gets around Metropolis and the ways they deal with Brainiac's hordes of mind-controlled soldiers and other eldrich-looking monstrosities. However, the footage didn't go off as planned. Debra Wilson's Amanda Waller hacked into the production and appeared on stage to lecture host Geoff Keighley about releasing classified information. She still let us see the game despite the threats. I'm not sure why; I'm not a security expert. We got a great look at the Squad's mobility and combat capabilities in the extended trailer. Harley Quinn grapples to what looks like bat-drones to swing around the air and get around the battlefield. She, of course, uses machine guns, explosives, and her trusty baseball bat in a fight. King Shark is shown climbing buildings and leaping far distances, on top of chomping foes with his big ol' shark mouth when he's not slicing fools with sicles or mowing down fodder with a chaingun. Captain Boomerang can teleport using his boomerang, slide, and take double-jumps to get around quickly. He also takes a shotgun in hand to work over crowds. Finally, you'll be surprised to know Deadshot uses plenty of guns. Tons of them. But he also showcases his ability to fly around thanks to a dope jetpack. We also get a taste of the narrative with Captain Boomerang taunting The Flash in a video, which predictably ends with him getting tagged in the face by the scarlet speedster. This may be the clearest look we've had at the corrupted Barry Allen, and to tell the truth, he may not be feeling too great. He's got something purple going on with his eyes and face and seems really irritable. He also may be a Saiyan. We see that Kamehameha you were charging up, Flash, and we're into it. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is still scheduled for a release sometime in 2022 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Posted: 09 Dec 2021 07:20 PM PST Iron Galaxy Studios has announced Rumbleverse, a new colorful free-to-play brawler with 40-player online multiplayer. Announced during The Game Awards 2021, the Rumbleverse debut trailer showcases some of the fun and zany characters we'll be playing as in the new brawler. It seems quite expansive too. Fighters in the trailer jump all around a city, scaling buildings and more. According to a press release about the game, players will use an "ever-changing arsenal of elbow drops, powerbombs, and dropkicks" to defeat others. Click here to watch embedded mediaYou'll be able to customize your brawler, of course, as each has 14 points of customization. While what we saw in the trailer looked great, it was purely cinematics. However, TGA host Geoff Keighley revealed that Rumbleverse will have a special gameplay event tomorrow, and it sounds like we'll be seeing actual gameplay then. This first look is tomorrow, December 10, from 12 p.m. EST to 6 p.m. EST. Based on a title screen at the end of the trailer, Rumbleverse is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via the Epic Games Store. There's no mention of Steam, so it seems if you want to play Rumbleverse on PC, you'll need to do so through the Epic Games Store. "Welcome to Grapital City," a description of Rumbleverse reads on the game's official website. "This city was built to celebrate the glorious traditions of melee combat – and you're invited. Create a unique champion. Get shot out of a cannon. Smash crates to find upgrades. Pick a fight and battle to the last." If you're interested in checking out Rumbleverse for yourself, you can sign up to jump into Early Access at Rumbleverse.com. Are you excited about Rumbleverse? Let us know in the comments below!

Among Us Brings Space Murder To VR Posted: 09 Dec 2021 07:20 PM PST In one of The Game Awards' shortest reveals of the night, developer Innersloth announced the wildly popular Among Us is heading to VR. That's right; you'll be able to voluntarily strap yourself into a simulated crewmate helmet and attempt to survive while a murderous imposter roams your ship. Or, you could be the one stabbing your friends in the back as they go about trying to swipe that key card just right. The trailer only showed a glimpse of the VR game's new look, but the 3D reimagining doesn't seem to deviate too wildly from Among Us' simplistic design. The footage shows us what it will look like to stand in the Skeld, scanning around suspiciously at the several vents strewn about the room while trying to punch in a series of numbers in the keypad before us. Everything seems fine...until it isn't and the screen goes blank. Among Us VR seems like a fertile ground for jump scares. https://twitter.com/AmongUsVR/status/1469138818066522116The team did not share more about the title in the trailer, but Innersloth's website gave us a little more to go on: This new 3D experience will place you and our suspicious spacebeans in the heart of the Skeld, with all of the core mechanics of teamwork and betrayal you know and love. The VR edition will continue to support the multiplayer experience too, of course! Now you can really have an emergency meeting together. (Note: VR version won't be compatible with the original Among Us game, so you'll only be able to play against other VR beans.) Platforms, release dates, and additional information around Among Us VR will be announced at a later date. To stay updated, you can follow our new Among Us VR Twitter account or keep an eye on our site right here.

Dune: Spice Wars Continues A Long-Running Strategy Tradition Posted: 09 Dec 2021 07:06 PM PST We got our first look at Dune: Spice Wars this evening, and the game is clearly looking to follow-up on a long-established claim of success in the strategy genre. The new trailer is mostly atmospheric, and we hear a lot of place and character names that firmly entrench the new game in the Dune fiction. As the camera pans out from a scene on Arrakis, we see a giant hand holding a portion of the planet, sand slipping from its fingers. The game's official site has more detail to offer, promising that Dune: Spice Wars is a real-time strategy game with 4X elements. The game is being developed by Shiro Games, the team behind the survival game called Northgard. In the new Spice Wars game, players take charge of a faction vying for control of Arakkis, the only place in the universe where Spice can be found, a substance that can expand consciousness and allow for space travel across vast distances. Of course, players can take control of familiar factions like Atreides and Harkonnen, but it sounds like other factions are an option as well. The game is also promising a variety of mechanics and ways to aim for victory, including subterfuge, politics, growth of economy, or straight-up warfare. The game boasts 4X dynamics in real-time, as players will explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate while they seek control of the vast desert planet. Dune: Spice Wars is coming to early access first to help further development of the project, and the first chance to try the game is on the way in 2022. Dune is experiencing a particularly potent resurgence at the moment thanks to the new and successful film, and this first glimpse of the new game looks promising. Click here to watch embedded media

Forspoken Gets A Release Date And New Trailer Introducing Frey's Adversary Posted: 09 Dec 2021 07:01 PM PST ![]() Forspoken is an upcoming action/role-playing game from Square Enix's Luminous Productions, and it has some top-tier talent behind it. The game's writing team includes Gary Whitta, Amy Hennig, Allison Rymer, and Todd Stashwick, to name a few. But we still haven't seen much about the game, which centers on a young woman named Frey who gets transported from New York City to a fantastical world. A new trailer shown at The Game Awards tonight changed that, introducing us to one of Frey's adversaries, played by Pollyanna McIntosh (The Walking Dead). In the trailer, Frey begs to go home and says she doesn't know how she got to this strange world. But it looks like she's not exactly having a great time, as she has to contend with fire-breathing dragons and other animal and human threats attacking her. And she's pretty much getting blamed for everything, with people saying she trespassed on the land and set this battle into motion. Meet The Characters Playing Tiny Tina's Game In A New Wonderlands Trailer Posted: 09 Dec 2021 06:55 PM PST Gearbox debuted a new look at Tiny Tina's Wonderlands with a trailer at The Game Awards focusing on the fantasy looter shooter's story and characters. Will Arnett's voice as The Dragon Lord opens the trailer, where a tome titled Bunkers & Badasses sprawls open, introducing the player's role of The Fatemaker. This moniker explains itself pretty well! Soon after, we meet Valentine (Andy Samberg), one of the characters in your B&B campaign, who also introduces his "scary, stabby" friend, a robot named Frette. Click here to watch embedded mediaA press release from Gearbox breaks down some of the characters we see in the trailer and will meet during our time with Tiny Tina (Ashly Burch). Valentine likens himself to a dashing rogue, while others pin him as a "washed-up, low-rent space pirate." Also joining the playgroup is Frette, a former accounting bot who found herself traveling with Valentine after a "chance encounter" that resulted in her former employer "filing for Bankruptcy While Currently On Fire," which is said to be legally different from regular bankruptcy. Rounding out the team is Torgue, the famed Borderlands weapons manufacturer with a persona not unlike a professional wrestler. You can see him in the trailer jamming on a very complex-looking guitar, filling the role of the bard in Tina's tabletop RPG. Speaking of which, Wonderlands has players moving around a tabletop overworld where fourth-wall-breaking objects like cheese puffs and bottlecap bridges enhance the sense of these characters sitting around a table, playing Bunkers & Badasses. Tiny Tina's Wonderlands launches on March 25 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Epic Games Store will be the exclusive home for the PC version at launch, with other PC marketplaces receiving the game later in 2022. Do you like the tabletop RPG trappings of Wonderlands? How do the characters look so far? Let us know in the comments!

New Saints Row Gameplay Shown At The Game Awards Posted: 09 Dec 2021 06:52 PM PST Tonight during The Game Awards, Deep Silver Volition showed off a new trailer for its upcoming Saints Row reboot. There wasn't any news in the trailer that people didn't already know – especially if they read Game Informer's cover story a few months back – but it was a new look, regardless. In the trailer, we see a variety of the game's different gangs, looks at the story, and its open-world mayhem – including, but not limited to, a helicopter swinging a car around like a wrecking ball, tanks wrecking shop, men getting kicked in the groin, and lots and lots of explosions. Dreams Do Come True: A New Look At Somerville Posted: 09 Dec 2021 06:30 PM PST Jumpship, the development studio working on Somerville, was formed in 2017, and it has some big names behind it. According to The Game Awards host, Geoff Keighley, two years later, in 2019, one developer shared his dream of seeing the studio's debut project on the show's big stage. That was a wish Keighley seemed happy to grant at tonight's ceremony as he introduced a new trailer for Somerville. Tense and enigmatic, the trailer flashes from creepy, abandoned toy stores to scenes showcasing speeding spacecraft. It doesn't reveal a lot about what fans can expect from the moment-to-moment gameplay, and doesn't unveil a definitive release date, but it does show off the game's fantastic aesthetic and nail-biting tone. Click here to watch embedded mediaThough the footage got The Game Awards' signature "World Premiere" treatment, this is actually the most recent of several looks we've had at Somerville. Earlier this summer, Jumpship's title got the spotlight during Microsoft's E3 event. The trailer was equally enigmatic, though it introduced the idea that the game would follow a once-quiet world visited by hostile, extraterrestrial entities. Hopefully, we will see more of the game, and get a release date, soon.

The Expanse: A Telltale Series Announced, And It's Being Co-Developed By Deck Nine Posted: 09 Dec 2021 06:17 PM PST Click here to watch embedded media Telltale has announced The Expanse: A Telltale Series and it's co-developing the game with Deck Nine, the studio behind this year's Life Is Strange: True Colors. Revealed during The Game Awards 2021 by way of a debut trailer, The Expanse is a prequel to the Amazon TV series of the same name (which itself is based on The Expanse novella series) and it will feature Camina Drummer as the main protagonist. Drummer, heavily featured throughout Amazon's show, is the leader of a ragtag scavenging crew in the game and players must explore the outer belt while making tough decisions that will decide the fate of her crew and more. ![]() "One of our driving forces is to empower other creative voices to tell their stories in the manner of previous genre-defining Telltale games," Telltale CEO Jamie Ottilie writes in a press release. "We are such fans of the work Deck Nine has done and were searching for an IP we could create stories in together. The Expanse is a rich world both studios are really excited to explore." Telltale says that players, as Drummer, must work with a mixed bag of personalities aboard The Artemis spaceship, square off against a mutiny, explore location beyond this solar system's outer belt, and make tough decisions fans of Telltale have to come to know and love. "Working with a fantastic IP like The Expanse is both daunting and thrilling," Deck Nine COO Jeff Litchford said. "We wanted to pick a character and story that hadn't already been told – one that players could really influence but that also stayed true to the books and series for the fans. The collaboration with Telltale has enabled us to bounce around ideas and approach things from the different perspectives each company brings to the adventure genre as we work to tell the best story possible." ![]() The Expanse: A Telltale Series is currently in the early stages of production, according to Telltale, and it's expected to release sometime in the future on PC and "leading consoles." Destiny 2: The Witch Queen Rolls Out Narrative-Focused Trailer Posted: 09 Dec 2021 06:09 PM PST This evening's Game Awards presentation brought a new look at Destiny 2: The Witch Queen. We've known for some months that the new expansion was going to change up the status quo of power in the Destiny universe. Specifically, the Hive goddess named Savathûn seems to have found a way to grant Guardian-like powers to her Hive soldiers. Of greatest significance, that means that the Hive foes you defeat can come back from death after you take them down. That was the focus of the new video that debuted tonight, comprised of in-game footage that shows off a fireteam confronting a Hive Knight Guardian, accompanied by a live-action debrief between one of the human Guardians who was present and Ikora Rey, in her role as a leader of the Vanguard. The fireteam seems to destroy the Hive Knight, but then it comes back from death. The combat must eventually turn out to the better, as the returning fireteam member has the remains of the Hive Ghost, but it's clear that things did not go well on the mission. After the trailer, we also learned that the footage shown was from the opening mission of the new expansion. Destiny 2: The Witch Queen is set to release across all platforms on February 22. It's been a long wait for a major new expansion, but the scope and drama of Savathûn's big coming-out party has us excited. Click here to watch embedded media

Check Out Slitterhead, The New Game From Silent Hill's Creator Posted: 09 Dec 2021 06:07 PM PST Bokeh Game Studio, the new independent development house headed up by Silent Hill director Keiichiro Toyama, finally unveiled its debut project, Slitterhead, tonight at The Game Awards. Predictably, it's grotesque. The trailer opens with a man walking down a typical city alley before running into a woman. Shortly thereafter, we get our first glimpse at what is ostensibly a Slitterhead, as the woman's face tears open and her body mutates into a skeletal monstrosity. From there, a bizarre compilation of scenes plays, including, but not limited to, police being chopped in half by similar skeletal beasts, a man in a motorcycle helmet conjuring blood into a sword, another man in his pajamas falling through the sky, and more. We end on a shot of a densely-packed apartment complex as a plane flies closely overhead, before zooming in on an older woman whose face has torn open – much like the others – though this time it shuts, leaving the woman looking normal. Check out the full trailer below: Click here to watch embedded mediaAside from what we saw in the trailer, we don't know too much about Slitterhead, other than what Toyama's hinted at in past interviews. Back in June, it was revealed he was working on a choice-driven game. In December 2020, Toyama told IGN Japan his next project (ostensibly this one) would be released in 2023.

Monolith Open-World Wonder Woman Game In The Works Posted: 09 Dec 2021 06:01 PM PST ![]() Wonder Woman is finally getting her own game, and we didn't see this one coming. Today at The Game Awards, Warner Bros. Games announced the project with a small teaser that confirmed Monolith, best known for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, would be acting as the developer. The trailer, which you can watch above, didn't give us much information, but it did begin with Diana's mother, Hippolyta, calling Diana home, saying a threat comes to their shores. It looks like Wonder Woman will have a big weight on her shoulders as she'll have to restore what's been broken and make allies. "You are a hero, but you can be more," her mother says. Wonder Woman's shiny red, blue, and gold armor flashes with the iconic W, and we then see her lasso in all its glory. The trailer ends by saying: "You can be a leader," which makes us curious how Monolith will challenge us with that task, especially since the brief description spoke about uniting old enemies and forging new bonds. Monolith is the studio that brought us the famous nemesis system, after all, so we wouldn't be surprised if it had some clever ideas for Woman Woman. The trailer's Youtube description shed a little more light, saying Wonder Woman is an open-world action-adventure game where she'll have to unite two worlds. It's also confirmed to be a single-player game, with an original story set in the DC Universe. The description also said the game is powered by the nemesis system, so at the very least, we can count on that to enhance the experience. No platforms were verified at this time, but we'll update the story when they're revealed.

However, it appears Intergrade will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store, or at least, a non-EGS version has not been detailed. So, if you want to play Final Fantasy 7 Remake on PC next week, you'll have to buy it on the Epic Games Store for now. As a reminder, Intergrade includes the Intermission story episode. One of the more intriguing is the long-awaited reveal of Alan Wake II. Rumored in one form or another for years, the new game promises to finally give us some answers about the enigmatic writer and his adventures – or maybe just more questions. In the trailer, we hear narration from a mysterious voice, talking about expectations for a story, but the realization that sometimes a story isn't what you expect or want it to be. As the camera zooms in on a single figure in a desolate town, we hear the phrase: "This story is a monster, and monsters wear many faces." The new trailer finally gave us a first look at Alan Wake II, including a release date of 2023. Remedy's creative director, Sam Lake, was on site at The Game Awards to announce that this sequel is actually a survival/horror game, moving away from its action roots. Unfortunately, Remedy's Lake also revealed that we likely won't learn anything else about the game until summer of 2022. We did learn, however, that Remedy's Alan Wake II is headed to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and the Epic Games Store. Click here to watch embedded media

Senua's Saga: Hellblade II Gameplay Revealed At The Game Awards Posted: 09 Dec 2021 05:23 PM PST Tonight, opening the annual Game Awards show, developer Ninja Theory showed off the first look at Senua's Saga: Hellblade II gameplay. The trailer opens with protagonist Senua entering a cave with allies as an impossibly large, human-like beast stalks outside. When the giant beast walks into the cave, subsequently collapsing on the wall, the team attacks the monster, setting it ablaze. Soon after, Senua's team goes up in flames, as the beast slams its way around, trying to strike back at its aggressors. Spotting Senua and the remaining allies left living, the crew retreats, trying desperately to run away and retaliate as best it can. Click here to watch embedded mediaSenua and her team's efforts to bring down the beast all fall short as it continues to chase them outside of the cave, smashing surrounding structures. The trailer ends with the creature asking Senua for help. Senua replies, saying, "I know you," as one of the voices in her head says "It's you." The trailer ends there. Host Geoff Keighley said at the end of the trailer that what we were watching wasn't a cinematic, but real gameplay, though it was hard to tell how interactive anything shown off in the trailer actually was – the camera was constantly whipping around during the trailer, seemingly indicating at least part of it was, in fact, cinematics. At the very least, it stands to reason everything we were seeing was running in-engine. Senua's Saga: Hellblade II will be released on Xbox Series X/S and PC. It will also be available through Xbox's Game Pass subscription service. No release date was given.

Multiplayer Texas Chain Saw Massacre Game Announced Posted: 09 Dec 2021 05:04 PM PST ![]() The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is now making its way to the multiplayer game space. Today at The Game Awards, a brief teaser made the reveal. No gameplay was shown, but we did get a look at the small quiet town before Leatherface made his presence known. The clip, which you can above, shows Leatherface's bloody tools, including a yellow chainsaw. As a body swings upside down, it screams in terror as the chainsaw revs and blood splatters all over his face. "Texas Chain Saw Massacre: a multiplayer horror game based on true events" then flashes across the screen. Maybe it's taking a cue from the film, which marketed itself as being based on true events, but the plot was largely fictional with only minor details inspired by murder Ed Gein. Fear the Gun and SumoDigitalLtd - Nottingham are behind the multiplayer horror game, which its official Twitter calls: "an authentic gaming experience based on the groundbreaking 1974 film." No platforms were confirmed at this time. You can visit the game's official site here.

Play As The Big Reaper Himself In Newly Revealed Have A Nice Death Posted: 09 Dec 2021 05:02 PM PST Giving us some serious Death's Door vibes, Have a Nice Death is an action roguelite game just revealed at The Game Awards. The stunning hand-drawn art, however, gives it a unique personality, and its tone seems a little more humourous than Acid Nerve's hit title. You will be playing an overworked Death, and, as the head honcho of Death Incorporated, it's your job to make sure souls make it to their final resting place in the afterlife. But everyone needs a break now and then. In order to secure a much-needed vacation, you must steer your executive team, the Sorrows, away from their over-enthusiastic spree on Earth. Stuffed with gorgeous visuals and hectic, 2D action, the trailer shows off what happens when Death takes matters into his own hands. Click here to watch embedded mediaHave A Nice Death is coming to Early Access in March and, so far, developer Magic Design Studios has not announced whether the game will be coming to any consoles. Death-focused action title isn't the studio's first beautiful game. Back in 2019, it released Unruly Heroes, a vibrant adaptation of the popular Chinese tale Journey To The West, on every major platform, giving us hope that the developer's next project might follow suit. We will have to wait and see if we get more news on the title before it launches in Early Access next year.
