The classic Gold Box D&D RPGs are coming to Steam next week

Posted: 12 Mar 2022 04:14 PM PST

I no longer want to play any game released prior to 2005, but you may feel differently. You may look at the Gold Box D&D games and think, 'Yes, what I crave is hours upon hours of late-80s/early-90s CRPGs about dying in a sewer.'

If that is you, then good news: they're coming to Steam on March 29th, with some spit and polish.

WWE 2k22 is out now with big, regrettable DLC plans

Posted: 12 Mar 2022 02:59 PM PST

WWE 2k22 is out now on Steam, and if Steam reviews are any indication, it's pretty good. That's not a given: WWE 2k20 was so busted, in both funny ways and not, that the series took last year off.

Now that it's back and in form, 2K Games have outlined plans for new characters to be added to the game via post-launch DLC. It includes *checks list* hoo boy.

When Steam Deck support comes to games is "up to our studios", says Microsoft

Posted: 12 Mar 2022 01:59 PM PST

Valve's Steam Deck can run most games, but that doesn't mean it can run most games well. In listing out the status of their own games, Microsoft say that Psyconauts 2 is "Verified" - meaning it's fully supported - while Sea Of Thieves is merely "playable" and Halo Infinite isn't supported at all due to its anti-cheat.

Hopefully those games will be better supported in future, but, Microsoft say, "It's up to our studios how they fit Steam Deck integration for their games into their busy schedules."

The highest court in the Netherlands has ruled that card packs in FIFA Ultimate Team are not a form of gambling. The ruling overturns a decision from 2019 that ruled that they were, and rescinds a €10 million fine given to EA for breaching Dutch gambling law.

What are we all playing this weekend?

Posted: 12 Mar 2022 01:00 AM PST

I know I keep harping on about it, but I'm so ready for spring. Sunset is now past 6pm and oh what a joy! Every morning, the leafy buds on the tree outside my bedroom window are just a little fatter. And who knows, maybe it'll even become warm. Until then, what are you playing this weekend? Here's what we're clicking on.

Completing digital jigsaws of increasing size to avert a disaster

Posted: 11 Mar 2022 08:58 AM PST

I can't remember if I've mentioned this to you, dear readers, but I am currently mid-emigration. In about two weeks I'm moving to Ireland, which means for the past four months my live has been hellish. The paperwork the move involves, especially now we have from our European womb been untimely ripped, is a Kafkaesque nightmare. To ship my stuff without incurring importation tax I need to prove I'm going to live in Ireland and not just sell a bunch of second hand cutlery and old bras (one of those two things would probably be pretty lucrative, in fairness). This is all complicated even furtherer by the fact that I only found a flat to move to yesterday, and still don't have the tenancy agreement for it, which means no proof of address. Life, oh life.

I don't really have the option to have a piece of toast and watch the evening news, because when I'm not scanning my passport or estimating what worth to attach to my towels for the purposes of the shipping company's insurance, I am packing said towels into boxes, along with everything else I own. Basically the only free time I have is my lunch break. And what I am doing in my lunch break is making huge, virtual jigsaw puzzles in Jigsaw Puzzle Dreams. It's either that or go and sit in the toilets and have a little stress-cry. And as the move date approaches, the size of the puzzles has increased. On Thursday I started one that is 6k pieces. This may have been a miscalculation.

Elite Dangerous: Odyssey cancels console development to focus on PC

Posted: 11 Mar 2022 08:36 AM PST

Space sim Elite Dangerous has gone to the dogs since its latest expansion, Odyssey. It launched in May 2021 in a sorry state and, while developers Frontier have been fixing it up, it's still a mess now. This week Frontier announced that to help focus their efforts on fixing Odyssey, they're cancelling the yet-unreleased console version. Good news for us on PC, I suppose, but oof! "This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind," Frontier frontman David Braben said.

The amazing $10 indie game bundle for Ukraine has raised over $4 million

Posted: 11 Mar 2022 07:54 AM PST

Earlier this week, indie developers launched an amazing bundle with over 600 video games to raise money for charities helping relief efforts in Ukraine following Russia's invasion. The Bundle For Ukraine smashed its $1 million goal in under a day, hit the second goal of $2 million hours later, and has now passed the third goal of $4 million. It is still a ridiculous bargain, offering so much if you pay at least $10.

April 1st will bring the start of the London Games Festival, a loosely affiliated series of events which almost inevitably involves some poor fella in a Sonic costume posing for press photos on Westminster Bridge. Today, the Festival announced its Official Selection, 33 games which will be showcased online and in various events. Some good games in there, including PowerWash Simulator and Failbetter's Mask Of The Rose.

Aztech Forgotten Gods fights jank with a massive rocket-powered god arm

Posted: 11 Mar 2022 07:00 AM PST

Aztech is a superb name for a game, and almost makes describing its premise redundant. Throwing in that it's from the same developers who made Mulaka meant I had to give it a go.

I'm glad I did. Aztech No Colon Forgotten Gods starts with its weaker foot, showing rough edges right away, but that’s overshadowed by its entertaining movement system. During its opening, a quest prompt tells you to go home to sleep, as though they didn't just give you a magical power arm that's also a goddamn rocket.

My home was a short walk away. I didn't get there for 40 minutes.

Steam Deck gets Windows drivers to make switching OS easier

Posted: 11 Mar 2022 02:59 AM PST

Valve have gathered up some crucial Windows drivers for the Steam Deck, improving performance for those who want to ditch the default SteamOS and replace it with Windows 10. GPU, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth drivers are all available from Steam Support, so early Deck adopters looking for a change can get the requisite downloads all in one place.

These drivers come with caveats, mind. Audio drivers are still a work in progress, so only USB-C, 3.5mm, or Bluetooth headphones can output sound on Windows, and Valve’s post explains that dual-booting support still isn’t ready yet. Installing Windows, then, is an all-or-nothing switch that involves wiping SteamOS entirely.

Chrono Trigger adds ultrawide support with first patch in years

Posted: 11 Mar 2022 02:52 AM PST

When Square Enix first released RPG classic Chrono Trigger on PC in 2018, it was in a sorry state. Their 'updated' version was worse than the 1995 original, with blurry sprites, ugly menus, an incongruous font, and other problems. But they fixed it up a lot with patches, and now, almost four years since the last patch, they've applied a fresh coat of polish with another welcome update.

Bulwark is a building/strategy successor to The Falconeer's air combat

Posted: 10 Mar 2022 02:23 PM PST

Tradition is, if you want to build some interest and mystery around your early-in-development game, you plop out a trailer that shows nothing of the actual game in action. Bulwark goes the other way. The reveal trailer for the building-strategy followup to The Falconeer is nothing but the game being played - yet it's all the more mysterious and fascinating for it.

PC Building Simulator 2 announced as an Epic exclusive coming later this year

Posted: 10 Mar 2022 01:55 PM PST

PC Building Simulator was a surprise hit back in 2018, turning the annoying bits I have to do before I can play games into the game itself. Now a sequel has been announced, due later this year, which will likewise let you customise and repair PCs with accurately modelled parts. It'll be exclusive to the Epic Games Store.
