Video: We've Waited Years For This Moment

Posted: 15 Apr 2022 02:00 PM PDT

Scott Pilgrim and other goodies to unbox!

Remember when it seemed like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game would be forever lost to time, a victim of licensing issues. But we finally got it last year — and, like a bob-omb, absolutely blew us away. Limited Run Games released a physical edition of the game not long after it came out, and it was their most successful physical release of all time. Which meant, obviously, many people missed out on this gorgeous collector's edition.

So, we finally got our hands on one of these. To commemorate this stupendous occasion, the lovely Zion has put together a video where he unboxes this, along with a bunch of other goodies that he's picked up recently during his travels. It's a nice little follow-up to his last video, where he goes over a bunch of new additions to his collection.

Bethesda Sale Kicks Off On Switch eShop, Up To 67% Off Doom, Skyrim, Wolfenstein

Posted: 15 Apr 2022 12:50 PM PDT

And don't forget Quake.

Bethesda has launched a Switch eShop sale of all its titles, with discounts of 50% being the minimum while Doom Eternal (and its Deluxe Edition, which includes both DLC packs) both get a chunky 67% sliced off their full price.

In real money, that brings the base game down to $19.79 and the Deluxe Edition to $29.69. Elsewhere, Quake is down to $3.99 — not bad for a Nintendo Life 10/10! — and Dooms 1, 2 and 64 are all just $2.49. The first two games there got another free update just the other day, too. After a rocky launch they've both been patched to become really fantastic ports that are definitely worth checking out.

Take A Closer Look At The Citadel And Garangolm In Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak

Posted: 15 Apr 2022 12:00 PM PDT

Are you ready for the challenge?

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, the 'massive expansion' heading to the Switch / PC title on 30th June, will no doubt seek to emulate the success of the Iceborne expansion that was previously released for Monster Hunter: World on PlayStation 4 / Xbox One / PC. An information blowout in mid-March set the scene for what will hopefully be an exciting addition.

Capcom is continuing its consistent promotion of the expansion, and most recently has shared extended looks at key areas. At the top of the page is a tour of the Citadel that can be found in the new land, which will be a key location for tackling new Master Rank quests. It has some intriguing medieval / Dark Souls vibes.

Mini Review: Demon Turf: Neon Splash - A Brilliant Platforming Spin-Off Full Of Colour

Posted: 15 Apr 2022 10:00 AM PDT

Devilishly good platforming.

When Demon Turf launched at the tail end of 2021, it left a positive impression on us thanks to its solid platforming gameplay, retro aesthetic, and focus on speedrunning. The game fell short of true greatness due to its less-than-stellar combat mechanics, which frankly brought the whole experience down a few pegs. In a lovely surprise, publisher PlayTonic Friends has shadow-dropped a spin-off called Demon Turf: Neon Splash; think of it like stand-alone DLC, if you will!

Unlike the main game, Demon Turf: Neon Splash doesn't feature any kind of hub area (though it does feature an optional "Playground" for you to hang out in and practice your moves). It's far more content simply guiding the player through a series of linear levels, each more tricky than the last; make no mistake, some of the later levels can be fiendishly difficult. There are 10 normal levels in total, with an additional 10 remix levels that are even more brutal in their design.

Reggie Fils-Aimé To Talk Memes With Geoff Keighley In Bonus Audiobook Content

Posted: 15 Apr 2022 09:30 AM PDT

Not getting the audiobook? What's wrong with you?

Reggie Fils-Aimé's upcoming book, Disrupting the Game: From the Bronx to the Top of Nintendo, is only a few weeks away, and we're excited to read about the story of Nintendo, and gaming's, most well-known President.

To say Reggie has inspired thousands is an understatement. He invigorated Nintendo and brought many new eyes and faces into gaming, as new fans picked up controllers or developers, publishers, QA testers, etc. joined the industry because of his work. Many of us wouldn't love Nintendo games as much as we do without his enthusiasm. He's also got a pretty darn good legacy of memes behind him, and we've been wondering whether the book will cover any of these.

Random: A Novelisation For Zelda: A Link To The Past Had A Very Different Name For Link

Posted: 15 Apr 2022 08:45 AM PDT

It's not as glamorous as you might expect.

The Legend of Zelda franchise has seen its fair share of adaptations over the years. One of the most recognisable (and one of few that is still in print to this day) is the manga adaptation of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

In lesser-known circles, the game also happened to receive a novelisation in Japan by author Katsuyuki Ozaki. It was part of the Futabasha Fantasy Novel Series and took some liberties with some of the franchise's more well known aspects. You can check out the full novel over on Internet Archive, but keep in mind that the majority of the book is in Japanese text.

Feature: Best Eggs In Games

Posted: 15 Apr 2022 08:00 AM PDT

Don't ovoid 'em!

It's Easter, and we here at Nintendo Life think that "Easter Egg" features are more overdone than an egg boiled for 20 minutes. Besides, we know about all the Easter Eggs in games already, from Chris Houlihan's room to the secret Tingle dungeon that you can find in Skyward Sword by entering the Konami code. (That last one's not real. Right?)

But Easter is all about eggs (among other things), so why not celebrate our yolky friends with a list of the very best eggies in video games? This weekend, when you're chomping down on a hollow facsimile of a chicken oval, think of all the excellent eggs there have been across the years. Isn't that the true meaning of Easter, after all? (no)

Ravenous Devils Is A 'Psycho-Horror Cooking Simulator' Coming To Switch

Posted: 15 Apr 2022 07:00 AM PDT

Looks a bit meaty.

Quite a lot of video games are violent, as we aim for headshots or pummel thugs, though Ravenous Devils still finds a way to push buttons in a different way. It's a game that describes itself as a 'psycho-horror cooking simulator', and makes sure you really deal with the violence on offer.

Playing out like a grisly horror movie concept, you run a pub and tailor business in 19th Century London, and due to spiralling meat and resource prices you obtain materials through other means. The game seems to play out as real-time resource management / strategy, and is undoubtedly rather gnarly (definitely an 18+).

Random: This Artist's Majora's Mask X TNG Mash Up Is Too Good For This World

Posted: 15 Apr 2022 06:00 AM PDT

Night bird!

If you like yourself some Star Trek — and what intelligent, attractive person doesn't? — there's certainly plenty of it around at the moment. New series, new films, new games; it's a bountiful time for fans of the final frontier. Star Trek: Picard is currently deep into its second season, with the full main cast of The Next Generation confirmed to be returning in Season 3, and the upcoming Star Trek: Strange New Worlds seems to be offering a return to the episodic planet-of-the-week-style format that fans of 'Legacy' Trek have been jonesing for.

However, we recently stumbled across the beginnings of a fan project that loaded our torpedo bays with more nostalgia than that, even. Behold a bold meeting of two of our very favourite things in the universe: Star Trek: TNG and Zelda: Majora's Mask.

Review: Mario Golf - Strait-Laced Fun On The Fairway

Posted: 15 Apr 2022 05:00 AM PDT

Mario hits the links.

This review originally went live in 2008, and we're updating and republishing it to mark the game's arrival on Switch as part of the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack.

After Mario's forays into non-platforming genres — you know, the Karting, the Picross-ing, the Dr. Mario...ing — Nintendo realised something: put Mario in a game and it sells by the bucketload. Soon Mario and co. began starring in sports games of different types. In the years that followed he took up baseball, soccer and even Dance Dance Revolution. His very first headlining foray in the world of sport came with Mario's Tennis on the Virtual Boy, though — an inauspicious start thanks to the commercial failure of that console. Undeterred, Nintendo threw the plumber a golf bag and shoved him out on the fairway in a game which took approximately two seconds to think up a title for.

The Wii U Gets More Love As 'Reversi 32' Releases Later This April

Posted: 15 Apr 2022 04:30 AM PDT

Wii love to see it. U love to see it.

Okay, we'll stop speculating when the last Wii U game will hit us. Every time we bring it up, another one sneaks in. We love seeing this underappreciated console get some love, so we're going to shout about any new games we spot on the horizon.

April 2022 is becoming the official Wii U revival month, as Cragworks' Reversi 32 has a release date of 28th April. Now, this one is a version of the classic strategy board game Reversi that you can play on your GamePad, but it's actually been in development for a pretty long time.

And for less than a fiver!

Action-packed, roguelike-inspired shooter Groundskeeper2 has blasted its way onto Switch. And, better still, it won't even cost you a £5 note!

This hectic survival game sees you get dropped into the middle of a war between robots. Each level is randomised, so every time you go back to the game, you'll experience something different. For a note, this is something you could easily spend hours and hours on, and the retro-style pixel visuals are pretty cute to boot!

Random: Classic Kirby Goes Supersize With This Irresistible 30th Anniversary Plush

Posted: 15 Apr 2022 03:15 AM PDT

More to squeeze and more to love.

Did you know Kirby's 30th birthday is coming up soon? The pink puffball's 30th anniversary is on 27th April, which is when Kirby's Dream Land first came out in Japan in 1992. He wasn't pink here then, due to a misunderstanding and the Game Boy's lack of colour, but we know the truth, Nintendo.

There are already a lot of celebrations planned for Kirby following the release of his first 3D adventure Kirby and the Forgotten Land, including a concert this August. Still, we've got the best kind of celebration to talk about today: giant plushies.

You Need To Buy DLC To Play Otome 'Taisho x Alice All In One' In English On Switch

Posted: 15 Apr 2022 02:00 AM PDT

Or upgrade to the 'English Text Mode' bundle.

Otome visual novel collection Taisho x Alice All in One arrived on Switch yesterday courtesy of PROTOTYPE. This romance game is in fact a bundle of four stories, which contains Taisho x Alice episode 1, episode 2, episode 3, and epilogue. That's plenty of dreamy bedtime reading.

Taisho x Alice s a twist on the book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its follow-up, Through the Looking-Glass. But instead of meeting many of the book's characters, each chapter contains different gender-swapped fairytale characters such as Cinderella, Gretel, and the Huntsman. Alice is there too, of course, as a blonde-haired male bachelor, but you should try to not be late for a date with any of your suitors.

Demon Turf: Neon Splash Shadow-Drops On Switch eShop

Posted: 15 Apr 2022 01:00 AM PDT

2D and not 2D.

If you're a fan of 3D platformers, you probably remember Demon Turf from last year, a tight, neat-looking little gem from Fabraz (Slime-san) and Playtonic Friends that released in November. Mixing 2D visuals into a 3D space, we very much enjoyed our time with it, so it's exciting to see a new game featuring Beebz shadow-drop on Switch eShop.

Demon Turf: Neon Splash is a totally new game that ditches the combat from the original — the one part we found a little dull when we reviewed the game — and focuses on what it does best. That's right: no filler, all platforming. That's how that phrase goes, right?

Guide: Best Twin Stick Shooters On Nintendo Switch

Posted: 14 Apr 2022 12:00 PM PDT

Opposable thumbs required.

Twin-stick shooters are ruddy good fun, right? It's a genre that allows you to just switch off your brain for a few minutes at a time while you blast enemies into the abyss. All you need is a couple of analogue sticks and a thirst for destruction and you're ready to go!

We've already got a list for the best shmup games on Switch, but we reckon the twin-stick shooter sub-genre is a whole different beast in itself. It's often lumped in with roguelikes these days, with procedurally generated levels that offer up entirely unique playthroughs — and there's certainly some overlap — but there are also fine examples that put the focus on handcrafted levels.
