Alba: A Wildlife Adventure Review - A Good Deed Posted: 08 Jan 2021 02:21 PM PST Publisher: ustwogames Developer: ustwogames Release: (PC, iOS), 2021 (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Switch) Reviewed on: PC Also on: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, iOS Alba is an adorable young girl who can't wait to spend a vacation with her grandparents on a scenic Mediterranean island. However, things take a turn for the dastardly when the small town's mayor partners with a shady building developer to construct a massive resort on the site of a beloved nature preserve. Armed with her trusty smartphone, Alba embarks on an altruistic quest to photograph the island's wildlife to remind residents of what's truly at stake and garner enough support to oppose the resort's development. Alba: A Wildlife Adventure is a wonderfully charming experience from Ustwo Games, the team behind the Monument Valley series. Instead of challenging players with M.C. Escher-style puzzles, it mellows them out with a relaxing, feel-good experience designed to promote conservation in an entertaining manner. You spend much of your crusade taking photos of wildlife, and it's a lot more fun than it might sound. Alba taps into the Pokémon Snap-like excitement of hunting down a critter, lining up that perfect shot, and filling out her wildlife journal. I found myself anxious to photograph every creature, and dozens of animals await Alba's camera eye, some rarer than others. My excitement dulled over time, however, because so many of the animals were birds. To lure some animals into the open, players must clean up the environment by collecting garbage or repairing fixtures such as birdhouses. It's nothing fancy or complicated, but there's an undeniable satisfaction in removing a pile of trash and watching a flock of ducks swoop in to enjoy the now-tidy area (and thus providing more fodder for your camera). The photos you take are implemented in other fun ways, such as replacing the images on weathered trail markers, or impressing an equally nature-conscious park ranger. Overall, the goal is to collect 50 petition signatures by the end of the week. Don't stress, though: You can end any day at your leisure, and I appreciated the allowance to take my time. Capturing photos and cleaning up pays off in signatures, as does fulfilling simple tasks by the town's colorful residents. These uncomplicated tasks range from finding a lost dog to convincing a woman to sample the latest ice cream flavor. That simplicity might be an indictment in other games, but Alba's breezy atmosphere makes cruising through the fluff more relaxing than boring. Click here to watch embedded mediaThe small island makes it easy to check off the game's entire to-do list, a task I felt compelled to do even if it's not entirely required. Plus, the extra running around provides more opportunities to watch Alba sprint with her arms out in airplane mode, which always succeeded in making me say "aww." And amid this playfulness, the game succeeds in promoting conservation without being too preachy. Alba: A Wildlife Adventure reminds players that happiness can be found in supporting worthy causes bigger than yourself. It feels nice to play a game about actively improving the world, and it does so with skill and charm instead of cringe. It's the video game equivalent of sneaking vegetables into a tasty smoothie. This is one good deed that shouldn't go unrewarded Click image thumbnails to view larger version ![]()
Score: 8Summary: Alba: A Wildlife Adventure is a lighthearted and enjoyable lesson on the importance of conservation Concept: With your trusty phone and can-do attitude, restore and preserve the natural beauty of a Mediterranean island endangered by corporate development Graphics: Vibrant colors and doll-like character models make this easy on the eyes. Watching Alba's running animation go from skipping to imitating an airplane is heartwarming Sound: The Spanish-influenced soundtrack conveys the culture and serenity of your surroundings Playability: Taking photos of animals is a cinch, and winds up feeling more exciting and gratifying than you'd expect Entertainment: Enjoyable gameplay, charming writing, and a chill atmosphere promote an important message without beating players over the head with it. Borderlands Movie Will Begin Filming In Budapest Soon Posted: 08 Jan 2021 11:35 AM PST Eli Roth's Borderlands movie is preparing to go all-in production-wise under the Lionsgate helm. With reports circulating heavily of comedian Kevin Hart's involvement, cautious interest in how this will turn out has been high. With COVID-19 lockdown restrictions continuing into 2021, a lot of aspects of the entertainment industry, particularly with movies, have come under question, but it looks like the studio is prepping to begin filming soon in Budapest, Hungary. MidAtlantic Films head Adam Goodman recently sat down with the folks of The Hollywood Reporter to talk about what's next for the upcoming movie, saying "We're opened up space for a Lionsgate film, Borderlands [starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart], we're doing season three of Jack Ryan for Paramount TV, and we're doing a Marvel project, which, for the usual security reasons, I can't talk about. We're basically fully booked for the coming cycle, until the summer, which, hopefully, will be the last cycle of shows we have to do under COVID-19 protocols." As for Hart's reported involvement, his role has yet to be defined publicly at this time. Previous rumors have him slated to take on the role of Roland alongside Cate Blanchett's take on our beloved Lilith. It will be interesting to see the full cast list when it rolls out and who will be playing who. The move to Hungary has been a popular choice for many in film and TV due to its place within the pandemic. Hungary was a location that was among the last to implement lockdown restrictions due to low infection numbers at the start of the spread. The government was also proactive with taking measures to overcome the virus with a heavy focus on getting industries like the film industry back up and running safely. "I'm so excited to dive into the world of Borderlands and I could not be doing it with a better script, producing team, and studio," said director Eli Roth when the Borderlands movie was first announced. "I have a long, successful history with Lionsgate — I feel like we have grown up together and that everything in my directing career has led to a project of this scale and ambition. I look forward to bringing my own energy, ideas, and vision to the wild, fun, and endlessly creative world of the game. Randy Pitchford and everyone at Gearbox have been incredibly supportive of my ideas — it really feels like a perfect storm of creators coming together. We are out to make a new classic, one which the fans of the game will love, but also one which will find new audiences globally." Hopefully we'll learn more here shortly about who else is involved with this project and what the adaptation will have to offer longtime Pandora dwellers. Who do you hope to see reprise a role of a beloved Borderlands character in the upcoming movie? Sound off with your dream cast in the comment section below! [Source: The Hollywood Reporter]

New Dragon Age 4 Concept Art Revealed Posted: 08 Jan 2021 09:13 AM PST ![]() Dragon Age 4 is a long way off but following the Game Awards trailer at the end of December, we've got a closer look at what the next journey in Thedas will have to offer. With a closer look at Tevinter and Antiva, the chase after Solas looks like it has a lot of potential for fans, a potential that was further teased thanks to new Dragon Age 4 concept art. The latest concept art shared comes by way of newly appointed Dragon Age executive producer Christian Dailey but in true sassy fashion (a style we've come to know and love through the years), former Dragon Age 4 lead Mark Darrah weighed in. He playfully added, "Oh so CHRISTIAN gets to post new concept art...I see how it is."
Could this be our new protagonist? It's possible, but still way too early to tell. That being said, BioWare has been known to hide the obvious in plain sight with previous game releases, so honestly? Only time will tell. If you're looking for more Dragon Age goodness, I've never been shy about being open about my love for this franchise. With far more playthroughs than I'd care to admit, I've tanked thousands of hours in all three games, the books, and even the comics. Because of that, I have a few retrospective pieces breaking down the bigger nuances from previous teasers like Solas' relationship with red lyrium and how we could be getting a Mortalitasi companion. What do you think about the new Dragon Age 4 concept art? Do you think this could be our new protagonist, or just something to show off the art styling? Sound off with your thoughts in the comment section below!
