Making Black Panther 2 Without Chadwick Boseman Is "Hardest Thing" Ryan Coogler Has Done Professionally

Posted: 11 Mar 2021 09:24 AM PST

Director Ryan Coogler has spoken about making the Marvel sequel Black Panther 2 without Chadwick Boseman. The actor, who starred as T'Challa in 2018's hugely successful Black Panther, tragically died from cancer last August.

Coogler was interviewed for the Jemele Hill is Unbothered podcast. He was asked about the challenges of writing and directing Black Panther 2, which is scheduled for a 2022 release, without his leading man. Coogler admitted that he was finding it hard to separate his personal loss from the fact he has a job to do.

"You have a professional life, you've got a personal life," he said. "Personal life, I'm going to say that when you work in something that you love, those things blend, they come together. I'm trying to find a work-life balance. But I'm not there yet, so this is without a question the hardest thing I've had to do in my professional life."

Someone Built An Entire Video Rental Store In Their Basement

Posted: 11 Mar 2021 09:22 AM PST

While movie theaters in some markets are making plans to cautiously re-open with restrictions in place, TikTok user thevideobunker is single-handedly trying to revive video stores--kind of. "During quarantine, my husband built a video rental store in our basement," the account holder explains in a first-person guided tour of a surprisingly authentic and spacious setup that, indeed, looks exactly like a video store.

After the local Family Video store closed in 2020, thevideobunker explains, it gave her husband access to "a lot of shelving" and both the idea and inclination to focus on this "instead of refinishing our kitchen cabinets." But this isn't just some dingy basement with a few shelves--it's a legitimate full-fledged facsimile of a video store, complete with an entrance through a front door on a brick wall and neon sign in the window.

Inside, the space is full of DVDs and Blu-rays, a cash register, drink fridge, snacks, and memorabilia from assorted films. There's even an additional viewing room off to the side complete with two recliners, wall-to-wall VHS tapes, a LaserDisc player, and retro video games. The account, which launched recently, only has two videos so far--after the initial tour, another video was uploaded answering one viewer's question: "Where's the adults only section?" Thevideobunker's husband replies: "It's up here, behind the counter, so you'll have to blush when you ask for titles."

Skater XL Adds Iconic San Francisco Map, Embarcadero

Posted: 11 Mar 2021 09:06 AM PST

The skateboarding game Skater XL gets a big update today, March 11, with the introduction of the new Embarcadero Plaza map. For those unfamiliar, the Embarcadero is the famous waterfront plaza in San Francisco that is popular with skateboarders.

"When it comes to landmarks in skateboard history, you'd be hard pressed to find more hallowed ground than San Francisco's Embarcadero Plaza during the 1990's era," developer Easy Day Studios said in a post on the PlayStation Blog. "Every day, SF locals and skaters from across the globe would come to EMB to write new pages in the book of skate history daily on the red bricks, stairs, blocks, ledges to the infamous 'Gonz' Gap."

The Gonz Gap is named after skateboarding icon Mark "Gonz" Gonzalez, who is believed to be the first to ollie the gap and give it its name. You can find the gap above the "wave" wall on the map.

Upcoming Mortal Kombat Movie Gets R Rating

Posted: 11 Mar 2021 08:42 AM PST

The Exhibitor Relations Company, an analysis firm that "provides essential information and intelligence to the entertainment industry," is reporting that the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot movie has received an R rating for "strong bloody violence and language throughout, and some crude references." By itself, this may not seem like major news, but as the recently tweeted insight also indicates--both 1995's Mortal Kombat and 1997's Mortal Kombat: Annihilation received PG-13 ratings. This new version is due both in theaters and HBO Max on April 16.

Those who have seen the recently released red-band trailer--which was a lot of people, as the promo was viewed more than 166 million times in its first week--likely won't be shocked to hear what rating the film has earned. But more than any other well-publicized aspect of the movie that communicates what new approaches are being taken in adapting the franchise to a film in the 21st century, the R rating by itself may alone signal to fans this version is something different. We have a breakdown of how the 1995 original stacks up against the upcoming version--which also serves as a fun look at just how much CGI has improved in the last 26 years. While you're at it, you should also absolutely check out our breakdown of the trailer, which is loaded with Easter eggs

Mortal Kombat is directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by Aquaman director James Wan. It was previously set to be released in January, but was moved back to April. As with all other Warner movies this year, it will be released in theaters and made available to HBO Max subscribers on the same day. Subsequently, it will then stay on HBO Max for one month before then being available on other on-demand streaming services.

Forza Horizon 4 Has Strong Start On Steam

Posted: 11 Mar 2021 08:41 AM PST

Microsoft's latest Steam release, Forza Horizon 4, had a strong start on Valve's PC storefront. Following its release on March 9, the racing game zipped up on the top-seller charts on Steam, while the peak concurrent user numbers for the title have been strong right out of the gate.

The game's Twitter account celebrated the achievement, saying, "Leave it to the Forza community to blow us away once again. Within our first 24 hours on Steam we are one of the most-played racing franchises on the platform. THANK YOU!"

For March 11, Forza Horizon 4 reached more than 20,000 peak concurrent users, according to Steam's own public data. This puts it at just outside the top 50 most popular games on Steam. Forza Horizon 4 remains in the top 10 for the best-sellers overall on Steam, according to the landing page on Steam's website. Perhaps less good news for Microsoft is that review scores from Steam users are currently listed as "mixed," after more than 3,000 user reviews.

Posted: 11 Mar 2021 08:36 AM PST

Niantic is implementing a new referral system in Pokemon Go. The feature will first be tested in Australia before being rolled out to other parts of the world, and it'll dole out rewards when you refer new players to the game.

As Niantic explains on the official Pokemon Go blog, when you refer friends through the new system, both of you will receive rewards in the game such as Rare Candy, Incubators, and specific Pokemon encounters. The friends you refer can either be entirely new to the game or lapsed players who are returning after a while.

Niantic hasn't announced when the referral program will officially launch, but the studio says it will send out referral codes to players in Australia first as it tests out and fine-tunes the feature.

An unknown EA employee is alleged to be selling FIFA 21 Ultimate Team cards worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars. The scandal has quickly been nicknamed "EAGate" and has prompted the company to issue a statement saying it has opened a probe.

One package of Prime Icon Moments cards are even offered for 1700 euros ($2000). The Outer Worlds Gets A New Mystery Themed DLC, Murder On Eridanos

Posted: 11 Mar 2021 08:05 AM PST

After a quick tease showcasing new content coming to The Outer Worlds, developer Obsidian Entertainment has revealed the next story DLC, Murder on Eridanos, set for release on March 17. As the final DLC for The Outer Worlds, this endgame-focused expansion centers around a classic murder-mystery on the planet Eridanos, with your character having to solve a complex and strange 'whodunit' to uncover who assassinated the spokesperson for a new brand of space vodka.

Set for release on March 17, with the Switch version coming sometime later, the Murder on Eridanos DLC features new quests, gear, and a weird questline that seems totally in line with the bizarre plot of this space RPG. What makes Eridanos a stranger setting than the usual areas is that the planet's key locations are spread across a set of floating islands, each with its own points of interest, quests to find, and gear to add to your expanding inventory. Ahead of the announcement, GameSpot spent some time with the new DLC and uncovered the strange happenings on Eridanos.

The main story of the Murder on Eridanos expansion focuses on the death of the celebrity Halycon Helen, who was set to be the spokesperson for Rizzo's Spectrum Brown Vodka. After her suspicious death, you're tasked with finding her killer, which will inevitably uncover a sprawling plot involving weird, behavior-altering parasites, Eridanos' local Tossball team, and the happenings within the Grand Colonial luxury hotel. This new DLC will also introduce new gadgets, including the Discrepancy Amplifier that allows you to uncover hidden clues and secrets. Along with these gadgets, you can find new weapons like the Utter-Buddy, a science melee weapon that is essentially a souped-up cattle prod. There's also new armor and cosmetics to find, including the Ranger Mascot's Noggin', which comes from Eridanos' Tossball team's mascot.

EA Partners With Silver Rain Games For A Still Unannounced Project

Posted: 11 Mar 2021 08:00 AM PST

Electronic Arts has announced that it has partnered with Silver Rain Games, welcoming the studio's upcoming debut title into the expanding library of EA Originals. Silver Rain Games is an indie studio founded and now led by Abubakar Salim (who voiced Assassin's Creed Origins' Bayek and currently portrays Raised By Wolves' Father) and Melissa Phillips (who previously worked as the BAFTA games program manager). Prior to EA's announcement about the partnership, I had the chance to sit down with both co-founders.

"It speaks volumes--the fact that you can't actually define the genre of what [EA Originals] has built," Salim told me when I asked as to Silver Rain Games' reasoning for wanting to partner with EA. "That's the beauty of the art form of what they support and build. There's a freedom that the EA and the Originals team bring that allows you as the developer to truly find the strengths and weaknesses of what you bring to the table. At the end of the day, it's the developer's game."

Phillips said that "for now" Silver Rain Games and EA's partnership is only in regards to this first game that the studio is working on, which is still unannounced. During the interview, both Salim and Phillips remained tight-lipped about the game. "We want to tell you; we totally want to tell you," Phillips laughed after I jokingly admitted that, though I was trying my best, it was proving difficult to talk around a game that I knew nothing about.

Incredible Drone Film Takes You Into A Busy Bowling Alley

Posted: 11 Mar 2021 07:55 AM PST

A recent video surfaced of drone footage travelling through Bryant Lake Bowl in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and what's notable is how skilled the pilot is along with how cool the final product of the video looks like. It's worth your time to check it out for yourself.

It'll be a few months yet before we can start thinking about things like putting our grubby mitts all over bowling balls thrown by dozens of other bowlers. Even so, we're anticipating the day when we can once again gather at places like this bowling alley, which is the subject of the stunning short film, captured via drone, below.

The video comes via YouTuber jaybyrdfilms. In the video, an FPV drone begins above the bowling alley and snakes in through the door and around the alley as people bowl and chat. It works its way back into the back of the alley and back out, giving us a look at the whole building before the end.
