The Suicide Squad Review: James Gunn Unleashed Posted: 28 Jul 2021 09:00 AM PDT The Suicide Squad is a second chance--not just for the franchise, but also for director and writer James Gunn, who found himself in the position to pitch Warner Bros. a DC movie only after being fired from the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise at Disney. The stars had to align just right for this movie to be made at all, and it feels like a gamble in some ways--Warner Bros. bet not just that the controversy over Gunn's old tweets would blow over, but also that moviegoers would give The Suicide Squad another shot after the commercially successful but otherwise dismal 2016 version. It might come as a relief, then, that The Suicide Squad is completely delightful. It's shocking, bloody, hilarious, and heartfelt, with a winning ensemble who never feel wasted (unless that's the point--we'll get to that). Gunn's version of The Suicide Squad doesn't waste time laboring over the details of its premise--that a government agency led by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) implants bombs into the heads of supervillains and then sends them on deadly missions, leaving the US with deniability (and most likely ridding the world of some supervillains in the process). The program's official name is Task Force X, but they don't call it the Suicide Squad for nothing, as you'll learn early on in this movie. A lot of characters die very quickly, which explains how Gunn managed to balance the massive ensemble cast that we've seen in all the marketing. The answer: he didn't. Continue Reading at GameSpot |
Mythbusters Props, Including A Buster Dummy, Being Auctioned For Charity Posted: 28 Jul 2021 08:44 AM PDT It's been five years since the original incarnation of Mythbusters--hosted by Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman--came to an end. Now, fans of the series could own their very own piece of it thanks to an auction of several of the show's props, creations, and even one of the iconic Buster dummies. Even better, proceeds from the auction will benefit the Grant Imahara STEAM Foundation, named in honor of former host Grant Imahara, who died unexpectedly last year. The online auction kicks off on Friday, August 20. However, you can get a preview of what will be available now. And trust us, if you were a Mythbusters fan, chances are some of this will look pretty familiar. Among the items that will be up for grabs is a very big Newton's Cradle. This particular build was used as a scale model for the Season 11 episode where the team ultimately built a truly gigantic version of the popular desk toy out of cranes and wrecking balls. It would be hard to find a place for a wrecking ball Newton's Cradle in your house, but this scale version would be an interesting addition to your collection. Continue Reading at GameSpot |
Netflix Boss Doing "Everything I Can" To Get Christopher Nolan's Next Movie Posted: 28 Jul 2021 08:38 AM PDT Netflix's top movie boss, Scott Stuber, has pledged to do everything in his power to encourage Christopher Nolan to make his next movie for Netflix. Nolan has been outspoken about his love and admiration for the theatrical moviegoing experience, so getting him on board may not be easy. But speaking to Variety, Stuber said he hopes Netflix's recent deal with another one-time critic of streaming services, Steven Spielberg, might encourage Nolan to come around. According to Variety, Stuber and Nolan have "had ongoing conversations." "If and when he comes up with his new movie, it's about can we be a home for it and what would we need to do to make that happen," Stuber said. "He's an incredible filmmaker. I'm going to do everything I can. In this business I've learned you need to have zero ego. I get punched and knocked down and get back up." Continue Reading at GameSpot |

As revealed last month during PlayStation's State of Play stream, battle royale title Hunter's Arena: Legends will be available to claim all month. Hunter's Arena: Legends is a swordplay and martial arts focused battle royale that drops 30 players on a map in ancient Asia. It features two different game modes, including free-for-all and trios. Digimon Survive Delayed Once Again To 2022 Or Later Posted: 28 Jul 2021 08:34 AM PDT It looks like developer Witchcraft and publisher Bandai Namco have delayed Digimon Survive yet again. According to Toei Animation's latest financial report, the release date has been pushed back to "Q3 2022 and beyond". Digimon Survive is supposed to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Digimon anime. The game follows a young man named Takuma Momozka and his group of teenagers. They get lost during a school camping trip and find themselves in a new world filled with Digimon. Takuma is paired with Agumon, and each of his friends earn Digimon of their own. Together, they must find a way to get back home again. Digimon Survive was announced back in 2018 and was originally supposed to launch in 2020. However, producer Habu Kazumasa said that the game had been delayed to 2021. Now, it's suffered an additional delay into 2022. Continue Reading at GameSpot |
Xbox Games With Gold Free Games For August Announced Posted: 28 Jul 2021 08:19 AM PDT Microsoft has unveiled the Xbox Games with Gold lineup for August 2021. As always, Xbox Live Gold and Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can claim a pair of Xbox One games and two titles that are playable with backwards compatibility. Next month's freebies include Darksiders 3, Yooka-Laylee, Lost Planet 3, and Garou: Mark of the Wolves. You still have until the end of the month to claim two of July's freebies, Planet Alpha and Midway Arcade Origins. Meanwhile, Rock of Ages 3: Make and Break will be free until mid-August. Developed by Gunfire Games, Darksiders 3 is an action-RPG that will appeal to those who miss the days when open-world games didn't dominate the AAA game space. As a more linear action game, Darksiders 3 has stylish Souls-like combat that is surprisingly challenging (sometimes to its detriment) and a great atmosphere. Though it's certainly the weakest entry in the series, it's worth checking out for yourself. Darksiders 3 will be available to claim for free all throughout August. Yooka-Laylee is a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie, and it definitely pays homage to the formula of the classic platforming series. Yooka-Laylee is a collectathon platformer that rewards players for searching every inch of its worlds. While Yooka-Laylee doesn't add anything new to the genre, it's an enjoyable platformer with colorful characters and worlds that will likely appeal to the youngsters in your home. Yooka-Laylee will be up for grabs from August 16 to September 15. Continue Reading at GameSpot |

Modern Warfare, The Last Of Us Veterans Team Up For New Studio With $100 Million Investment Posted: 28 Jul 2021 07:12 AM PDT Developers from Call of Duty, The Last of Us, and PlayStation have formed a new studio to make AAA games, and they've received $100 million in funding for their first project. The team is called That's No Moon Entertainment Inc (a reference to Star Wars), which is not to be confused with the UK studio No Moon--the latter was founded in 2016. South Korean studio Smilegate (CrossFire) invested more than $100 million into That's No Moon for the new game, which is described as an "ambitious, new action-adventure game that will push the limits of both gameplay and story." In a post on the company's website, That's No Moon alluded to the possibility that its new game will be a single-player experience. "We believe in the importance of single-player narrative games and that story and gameplay are not two distinct ideas, but rather extensions of one another," the post says. "Our shared vision is to craft captivating stories and relatable, emotionally resonant characters that are not only entertaining, but thought-provoking. We want to make experiences that will stick with you for long after you put down the controller." Continue Reading at GameSpot |

Lord Of The Rings Star Dominic Monaghan Discusses Most Difficult Scene To Film Posted: 28 Jul 2021 06:52 AM PDT Actor Dominic Monaghan, who played Merry in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film series, has spoken about the most difficult scene in the entire series for him to film. Speaking to IGN, Monaghan said it was the Gray Havens scene at the end of The Return of the King, and what made it so difficult was the emotional weight of it and the fact that they had to film it three times. "If you were to ask all four of us, 'Pick a scene you can guarantee you only have to do once and not go back to,' we probably would have said Grey Havens, just cause we were all there weeping like children," he said. "So, doing it three times, I definitely think that the third version that I did, the one that's in the film, is probably not quite as hysterical in terms of the state that I'm in as the first one, or possibly even the second one. So, that was tough." Monaghan said Jackson wanted the four main Hobbits to be "a mess" when it came to their vulnerability and sadness over saying goodbye to Frodo. "It was challenging to do. You don't often get asked to do that as actors and all four of you are standing there very vulnerable doing it three times. It's pretty costing," he said. Continue Reading at GameSpot |

Gardevoir, Pokemon Unite's First New Character, Is An Elegant Glass Cannon Posted: 28 Jul 2021 06:25 AM PDT Pokemon Unite came stocked with a roster of 20 playable pocket monsters. But like many MOBAs, we knew from the start that more Pokemon would be added post-launch. The first one, Gardevoir, fulfills a familiar combat role, but also shows how the game plans to differentiate between similar characters. Gardevoir is another Ranged Attacker class, but it plays like no one else. In short, Gardevoir is what might be described as a glass cannon: extremely high damage potential while also being extremely fragile. You can see this right away in her power chart ratings compared to fellow Ranged Attackers Cramorant and Cinderace. All the Ranged Attackers generally have low endurance ratings since they're meant to keep their distance, but Gardevoir is especially vulnerable even by those standards. It has a lower endurance rating than Cramorant. Its endurance matches Cinderace, but it also has lower mobility and so it's less able to escape from sticky situations. The trade-off for Gardevoir's fragility comes with extremely high damage potential. In fact, Gardevoir is tied for the highest Offense rating with Pikachu and Venusaur. That makes it the highest DPS Ranged Attacker, which tend to be strong but not too strong or else the game balance would be thrown off by them wrecking shop from afar. Continue Reading at GameSpot |
Ryan Reynolds' Free Guy Is "Nominee" For Totally Real Non-Player Character Awards Posted: 28 Jul 2021 06:09 AM PDT Non-player characters, especially in first-person games, can often be more interesting than the protagonist, and certain games thrive because of the big cast of colorful companions you meet along the way. Xbox and 20th Century Studios are recognizing those characters--sort of--with the first Xbox Game Pass Non-Player Character Awards, hosted by Ryan Reynolds, who also just happens to be nominated. That seems fair. Ryan Reynolds won't actually get to decide who wins the award, however--that comes down to the fans. Alongside Reynold's character Guy in Free Guy, the other nominees are Samuel Hayden from the two recent Doom games, Parvati Holcomb from The Outer Worlds, and Chief Trader Mollie from Sea of Thieves. Yes, all of those games are from Xbox first-party studios, so we are calling shenanigans. Oddly, some major Xbox characters aren't included in the poll, like Cortana from Halo, Captain Keyes from Halo, Sergeant Avery Johnson from Halo, 343 Guilty Spark from Halo, Dr. Halsey from Halo, or Thomas Lasky from Halo.
