Guide: Where To Pre-Order Nintendo Switch OLED Model

Posted: 07 Jul 2021 12:00 AM PDT

Time to upgrade?

The lovingly titled Nintendo Switch (OLED model) has a very similar overall size to the Nintendo Switch console, but with a larger, vibrant 7-inch OLED screen with vivid colours and high contrast. It also features a wide adjustable stand for tabletop mode, a new dock with a wired LAN port for stable online play, 64GB of internal storage, and onboard speakers with enhanced audio for handheld and tabletop play.

Just like the standard Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch (OLED model) allows users to play on the TV and share the detachable Joy-Con controllers for the familiar out-of-the-box multiplayer fun. The new Switch comes in two colours — a version with the standard Neon Red and Blue Joy-Con and a black LAN dock and a new variant with white Joy-Con and white LAN dock.

Nintendo Employee Tells Fans To Stick With The Current Switch, If They're Not "Digging" The OLED Screen

Posted: 06 Jul 2021 06:30 PM PDT

Does it run any better? "Nope".

Nintendo has announced a new Switch and it has got owners of the older models wondering if it's time for an upgrade.

The company is yet to make an official statement about this - and likely won't directly address it, but it has clarified the OLED model does not have a new CPU or a RAM upgrade. Apart from the improved screen, internal memory upgrade, and a few other minor differences, it's much the same as the current dock version model.

Upcoming Gollum Game Gets New Trailer To Show Off Stealth-Parkour Gameplay

Posted: 06 Jul 2021 05:00 PM PDT

Precious new footage.

What do you think of when you think about Lord of the Rings' weaselly jewellery hoarder, Gollum? Is it parkour? It's totally parkour, isn't it?

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum recently got a new trailer at E3, but at less than a minute long, and mostly focused on story, it didn't give us much more of a look at the game. This new trailer, although it has a fairly prominent PRE-ALPHA FOOTAGE warning at the top, is looking pretty nice, with environments from Mirkwood, the Mines of Moria, and Mordor. Characters also include The Mouth of Sauron (who is a guy that speaks for Sauron, not actual Sauron's piehole) and Thranduil, King of the Elves of Mirkwood and Legolas' daddy.

Random: This Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 3D Embroidery Is Sew Cool

Posted: 06 Jul 2021 03:00 PM PDT

Link's Appliqué-ening.

Embroidery is very cool right now. Maybe it's the pandemic, maybe it's just that we're all desperately in search of a skill that will make us feel creative in an era in which our creativity is constantly monetised and turned into labour. Or maybe it's just that making things with pretty thread colours is fun! Who knows!

One of the most exciting trends in embroidery is the 3D effect — making artwork look like it is more than just thread on fabric. It's an extremely difficult technique that requires a lot of skill, and embroidery is already tricky enough as it is, but artist and threadmaster syd.stitch has it locked down.

Yes, Switch OLED Works With Your Old Dock

Posted: 06 Jul 2021 01:30 PM PDT

And vice versa.

Wait! Don't throw away your Nintendo Switch dock just yet! It's still good — even if it doesn't have that snazzy new LAN port.

The newly-announced Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) isn't much bigger than the old one, although it seems like the size difference is just enough that Labo kits might not fully work as intended any more — but the docks will still work juuuuust fine, according to the Nintendo UK FAQ. Even the new LAN port will work with older models.

Nintendo Confirms There's No CPU Or RAM Upgrade In The OLED Switch

Posted: 06 Jul 2021 12:30 PM PDT

It really is all all about the screen.

After months of Switch Pro rumours, Nintendo finally revealed its new hardware SKU - but it would seem that under the hood, the Switch OLED Model is very much the same beast as the original Switch.

While there were rumours that the new version would boast a more powerful processor to handle 4K output when docked, these have proven to be inaccurate – in regards to this model, at least.

Random: The Internet Reacts To The New Switch OLED Model

Posted: 06 Jul 2021 12:00 PM PDT

Get yer memes, get yer fresh memes here.

Wellll, wellllll, wellllllllll. It looks like every single games journalist and influencer was right after all, with a few hundred caveats. The much-rumoured Switch Pro has turned out to be a sliiiightly underwhelming new Nintendo Switch model with a bigger OLED screen, a hole for the internet to go into, and a horrible name that we're going to have to type out every single time we talk about it. Ugh.

But also, it comes in white, and the toaster dock is more slick! We didn't predict that. Or did we? Maybe we did. We've been trying to find new things to say about this years-long rumour, after all; we probably even predicted it would have Amazon Alexa integration at one point.

Nintendo FAQ Confirms That Switch OLED Joy-Cons Are The Same As Existing Controllers

Posted: 06 Jul 2021 11:00 AM PDT

Hopefully with stick improvements, but don't bank on it.

Nintendo's Joy-Cons are very smart, clever little controllers in various ways - HD Rumble, motion controls and the flexibility to be turned sideways for on-the-go multiplayer. However, you don't have to go far to find someone that has encountered reliability issues with the analogue sticks - this writer has gone through multiple sets and knows others with similar problems. Thankfully not everyone has these issues, but they are certainly a factor.

'Joy-Con drift' has even led to attempts at lawsuits, and the lingering hope is that Nintendo is continually improving their reliability through manufacturing batches. With the Switch OLED being announced, however, it's worth noting that its compatibility and same-ness with existing models includes Joy-Cons. Taken from an FAQ on Nintendo UK's official website, there's confirmation that even Joy-Cons bundled with the new hardware are the same as existing models on the market.

Nintendo Labo Toy-Cons Will Have "Differences In Game Experience" On Switch OLED

Posted: 06 Jul 2021 10:30 AM PDT

Awkward and snug fits expected.

Today's reveal of the Nintendo Switch OLED hasn't led to much disruption in terms of what games can be played and enjoyed; the system is the same under the hood, albeit the bigger screen and other goodies will still make it desirable. However it is a teeny bit wider, which will impact Nintendo Labo.

The Labo range has been an enjoyable part of this generation, albeit its quirky approach to building and gaming perhaps didn't achieve notable sales success as the series progressed. Now the official FAQ has outlined that there will be 'differences' playing the Labo Toy-Con accessories with the OLED model.

Talking Point: Nintendo Switch OLED Model Looks Lovely, But May Also Disappoint

Posted: 06 Jul 2021 10:00 AM PDT

In tricky times, just make the screen bigger.

Well, after over two years of speculation, Nintendo has finally unveiled the new Nintendo Switch, simply called the OLED model that's due to arrive on 8th October. It falls in line with some of the more recent rumours, offering a larger and higher quality screen – at 720p resolution – along with some other quality of life improvements like a wider and more flexible kickstand, a LAN / ethernet port on the new dock and improved speakers.

Now, let's be completely clear about what this isn't, it isn't a 'Pro' model. Nintendo gives no indication in any materials that it'll have improved performance in any way; the TEGRA chip may even be exactly the same as the 2019 'Mariko' iteration that boosted battery life, with OLED screen efficiency likely balanced out by the larger size. The branding and messaging here is simple - games will be the same.

Guide: Nintendo Switch OLED Screen: Why Is OLED Better Than LCD?

Posted: 06 Jul 2021 09:30 AM PDT

How much of an upgrade is the new Switch's screen?

Nintendo has announced the latest addition to the Nintendo Switch family of systems — and although it's not quite the long-rumoured 'Switch Pro', the Nintendo Switch OLED Model (to give its official name) is certainly a looker, with a bigger, brighter screen than the standard model.

Reminder: A Plague Tale: Innocence - Cloud Version Is Out Now On Switch

Posted: 06 Jul 2021 09:00 AM PDT

Oh rats.

A Plague Tale: Innocence is a game with some vocal supporters, this writer included - largely linear in nature, it tells the tale of two siblings as they try to survive in a gritty but also fantastical 1340s France. It recreates the era of the French Inquisition and an invading English army, with its hook being the consistent presence of thousands of rather creepy rats in various scenes.

It's a solid performer on PS4 / Xbox One and their mid-generation upgrades, and today it has an enhanced iteration for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. That said, it's clearly not feasible for a direct port to Switch, so today also sees the release of a Cloud Version, following predecessors in the format like Control and Hitman 3. Nintendo also included Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy in its E3 Direct, though it wasn't particularly clear until follow-up details that it will, naturally, be a cloud version.
