Video: Here's Another Look At Dragon Ball: Kakarot Running On Switch

Posted: 07 Jul 2021 09:15 PM PDT

Reunite with Goku and friends this September.

One of the highlights during Nintendo's E3 presentation this year was the announcement Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot would be coming to the Switch. This followed a number of rumours, so it was nice to see it finally confirmed.

Since then, there's been no information really shared about this upcoming release - to the point, you might have even forgotten about it. There's no need to worry though, as it's still on the way and to remind everyone, Bandai Namco has now shared a new five-minute Japanese video (below) of the Nintendo version.

Random: That Guy Playing The Switch OLED In His Hallway Is Driving Social Media Bonkers

Posted: 07 Jul 2021 05:55 PM PDT

"Realistically, he'd be on a toilet".

Nintendo revealed its Switch OLED with another one of those lifestyle commercials - showing people playing it in real life.

It starts off with a guy spending some time with Metroid Dread on the couch (believable), a woman by the pool enjoying the new Zelda title (again, yeah...it could happen), and then we get to a man who enters his home and begins to play the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl remake on a wooden bench in the hallway. What?!

Random: Slime Biscuits Celebrate Dragon Quest In Crunchy Style

Posted: 07 Jul 2021 01:00 PM PDT

Mmm, delicious slime.

Japan has quite a few regional delicacies — Tokyo Banana, for example — and it's traditional to buy beautifully-wrapped boxes of these tasty treats to take home to family and friends as souvenirs.

In Fukuoka, one of these delicacies is Niwaka Senpei, a thin, crunchy biscuit with eyes on it and a little slit for your nose, so you can wear it as a mask — it's based on the Hakata Niwaka masks from Japanese comedic plays.

Among Us Has Been Localised Into Irish

Posted: 07 Jul 2021 12:30 PM PDT

Immaculate craic.

Among Us' success continues to grow, and one of the measures of success is just how many official translations something has — including minority languages and languages that aren't even spoken any more, like Harry Potter's Latin, Ancient Greek, and Scots translations.

According to its Steam page, Among Us supports 12 languages so far, including Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, and Russian, but now they can add "Gaelige" to the list — the language of Ireland.

Dreamscaper Release Date Moves Forward On Switch

Posted: 07 Jul 2021 12:00 PM PDT

A pleasant dream.

While game delays have been an inevitability in recent times, occasionally we get a title a little early to balance things out. Upcoming Switch eShop release Dreamscaper is the latest game to do this; it's now due to arrive a week earlier on 5th August, which ties in with its upgrade to version 1.0 on Steam.

This is an action RPG roguelite, but before you tap 'next' because, let's be honest, lots of games fit that category, it's worth noting that this one is aiming for a slightly different approach to its story and systems. It blends very different daytime routines with battles at night, which could be an interesting twist; we had a brief chat with the developers as part of our E3 coverage.

This Guide To Japanese RPGs Is Amazing, And Also Out Of Stock

Posted: 07 Jul 2021 11:30 AM PDT

For now, at least.

If you're a long-time reader of the site then you'll be familiar with the output of UK publisher Bitmap Books, which has produced the likes of Game Boy: The Box Art Collection and The SNES Visual Compendium. You may also be aware of the talents of one Kurt Kalata, who is a contributor to Nintendo Life via reviews and features.

The news that these two mighty forces have combined to create A Guide To Japanese Role-Playing Games should come as a welcome fillup during a rather torrid time in global events, but before we allow you to get too excited, we should note that the book is now totally sold out (don't say we didn't warn you).

Supernatural Detective Game 'Unavowed' Gets Surprise Switch Release

Posted: 07 Jul 2021 11:00 AM PDT

Point-and-click fans, take note.

You might not have heard of Unavowed, but if you're a fan of adventure games, point-and-clicks, and excellent narratives in the vein of old-school Monkey Island, you should have heard of Wadjet Eye.

The American studio is perhaps the closest spiritual successor to the point-and-click games of the 90s (well, except Double Fine, which still exists) with games like The Shivah, The Blackwell Legacy, and Unavowed gaining the respect of critics and fans alike while still maintaining a "cult" status.

Level-5 Is Hiring For A New RPG Project

Posted: 07 Jul 2021 10:30 AM PDT

It's likely to be a mobile game.

The creators of Professor Layton, Yo-Kai Watch, Ni No Kuni, and Fantasy Life are recruiting for a new RPG that's in development.

The fact that Level-5 describe the project as "brand new" means that it won't be a continuation of any of those series, and the artwork above appears to show some concept art for the RPG, which looks like it'll combine cyberpunk elements with Level-5's signature fairytale style.

Soapbox: Could Switch OLED Actually Make A Reality Of Nintendo's Cheesy Tabletop Dream?

Posted: 07 Jul 2021 10:00 AM PDT

Time to annoy fellow coffee shop patrons.

The Switch 'hybrid' concept has, over the course of four years, proven to be a significant and important success for Nintendo. It's not just about the sales figures and huge profits, but it's lifted Nintendo's brand back to the sort of influence last enjoyed in the days of DS and Wii, albeit the outrageous sales of both of those systems together is unlikely to be matched. Nintendo is once again incredibly popular and prominent in the mainstream entertainment space, playing a major part in setting trends and getting shop tills to ring.

The magic of Switch is arguably its flexibility - to some it's a portable, others a console, and in all likelihood most of us use it as both. Yet Nintendo's promotion of the hardware is often humorously — how to put it -- unrealistic. As my colleague Kate highlighted in their internet reacts to Switch OLED round up, Nintendo doesn't seem to know how most people play games. It's aspirational marketing, I suppose.

Review: Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin - A Franchise Riding High

Posted: 07 Jul 2021 08:00 AM PDT

An ideal introduction to the series.

Monster Hunter is a series with a longstanding tradition of being impenetrable to casual first-time players, with systems layered upon systems and tricky combat. In the mainline series Monster Hunter: World provided a multi-platform mainstream breakthrough, while on Switch the recent Monster Hunter Rise followed that lead in applying copious quality of life improvements, and at times aggressive streamlining, to make the experience more palatable for a wide audience. That said, the IP's broad universe and the intricacies of its monsters are still vitally important factors, and no genre is better suited to making sense of a complex world than a traditional RPG.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin may be a sequel, but it's worth saying right away that you don't need to have played this spin-off's debut to jump into the new release — this reviewer hadn't, despite a borderline obsession with the main games. There are some returning characters along with some assorted nods and winks that no doubt raise a smile for those that fought through the 3DS epic, but nevertheless Capcom takes a generational approach to storytelling and it is certainly a standalone game.

Tails Of Iron Is An Adventure RPG With Heroic Rats, Arrives On Switch Soon

Posted: 07 Jul 2021 07:30 AM PDT

Frogs are the bad guys, so take down that Kermit poster.

Rats can get a bit of bad press at times - just this week A Plague Tale: Innocence - Cloud Version arrived on Switch to show hordes of rats as terrifying creatures of death. Tails of Iron is one game keen to show that they're not all bad, though.

Developed by UK-based Odd Bug Studio and published by United Label, Tails of Iron is an RPG adventure that showcases a rather nice visual style. It arrives on Switch via the eShop and at retail on 17th September, with Doug Cockle (previous credits include Geralt of Rivera in the Witcher series) on board as narrator of the tale. The physical retail versions will also include the Crimson Knight DLC pack that includes 12 different cosmetic skins.

Pokémon GO Banks A Cool $5 Billion In Revenue In Just 5 Years

Pikachu returned.

You know that Pokémon GO? It's still pretty popular, by all accounts — specifically the bank accounts of Niantic and The Pokémon Company (and by extension Nintendo).

Data from Sensor Tower (thanks, MCVUK) indicates that the hit AR mobile Pokémon catchathon is still doing incredible business around the globe and has now hit the $5 billion mark in lifetime revenue.

Another Nintendo Console Has Gotten An Upgrade, But It's From 18 Years Ago

Posted: 07 Jul 2021 06:30 AM PDT

GBA SP battery tech finally catches up with screen upgrades.

You can keep your fancy-pants Switch OLED Models, chum – for retro fans, the news that the GBA SP is getting a battery upgrade is arguably more exciting ('arguably' being the operative word here).

While older Nintendo systems like the Game Boy and Game Boy Advance have been subject to some really cool unofficial mods over the years – usually focused on overcoming inherent limitations with the crude screens they shipped with – these updates have often had a negative impact on the power consumption of the machines.

Hermitage: Strange Case Files Will Bring Mystery To Switch This Summer

Posted: 07 Jul 2021 06:00 AM PDT

Set in a book shop, which is fine by us.

As we recently highlighted, there's a bit of a boom of visual novels on Nintendo Switch, no doubt helped by the system's format being particularly well suited to the genre. Another has now been confirmed as an upcoming Summer arrival - Hermitage: Strange Case Files. Previously released on Steam in China by developer Arrowiz, it's being localised and published in the West by Giiku Games.

Though the trailer above isn't particularly recent, it gives a taste of what this one is aiming for in terms of its storytelling approach. It'll feature supernatural and potentially grisly plotlines, and seems quite intriguing based on the official description.

Stylish Puzzle Platformer 'Out Of Line' Out Now On Switch In Europe

Posted: 07 Jul 2021 04:00 AM PDT

Arrives in North America soon.

A rather beautiful looking puzzle platformer that's been on our radar is Out of Line, from developer Nerd Monkeys and publisher Hatinh Interactive.

It was originally confirmed for late June but seemed to slip slightly, but the good news is that it's out right now on the Switch eShop in Europe; it's got a 10% launch discount so it'll cost €9,89 / £8.90 for the next couple of weeks. It's coming a little later to the eShop in North America, however, confirmed to arrive in that region on 18th August.
